Glamour. It's hard to define yet most know it when they see it. Today, glamour may still invoke the sophistication and refinement of the golden years of Hollywood art deco, but country, industrial and even nature glamour have joined the more traditional modes.

The 21st century has brought glamour and her sisters, decoration and ornamentation back into home design news. Today's most cutting-edge homes embrace design of every kind from every corner of the globe. It's a marriage of disparate styles that finds no contradiction. Glamour is in vogue in homes that are castles (literally) and in one-bedroom rentals at the fringes of downtowns.

Looking at homes recently featured in Metropolitan Home, Glamour, Making It Modern reconsiders them through the following sections:

concepts: looks at the defining general notions of Modern Glamour, such as sheen and scale,
objects: examines elements of home decoration which are inherently glamorous,
rooms: tours homes where everything comes glamorously together.

With a directory of the designers, some of the best in the business, and a list of resources for available products, Glamour, Making It Modern is purely inspirational and absolutely accessible.

An updated illustrated survey overview highlighting the most outstanding projects by the well-established and renowned Mexican interior and furniture designer Gloria Cortina.

Superbly photographed, this beautifully crafted volume presents Cortina’s most recent interior projects and unique furniture pieces.

Cortina’s design inspirations range from Mayan artifacts to cubism, twentieth-century modernist art and architecture, Mexico’s unique arts and crafts heritage, and natural and archaeological environments.

Her unique approach to design, shaped by the visions of Mexican masters such as Diego Rivera and Luis Barragán, seeks to consolidate European and modernist influences with Mexico’s own arts and crafts heritage in pieces characterized by luxurious materials like tropical wood, stone, textured metal, and rich textiles sourced both locally and worldwide. Her designs are known for mixing Mexican antiquities, bespoke artisan-made pieces, and contemporary artworks and for her exquisitely rendered and sculptural pieces in bronze, obsidian, and quartz.

This volume will present Cortina’s blend of Old World sophistication and Mexican flair, which has affirmed her position as an arbiter of taste among the country’s elite; her aesthetic reflects the cosmopolitan nature of contemporary life in Mexico. Cortina’s recent projects range from Cabo San Lucas vacation homes for tech and finance giants to a new penthouse suite at the Sebastian resort in Vail, Colorado, luxury apartments in New York, and monumental homes in Mexico City.

About the Author:

Gloria Cortina was born and raised in Mexico City and studied at Parsons School of Design in New York. After a period of working with architect David Ling in New York, she returned to Mexico to work for the architect Ricardo Legorreta, later joining forces with others to launch the avant-garde firm A5 Arquitectura. It examines the way this cloth, with its deeply embedded, multi-layered meanings, has been re-created to become relevant to a modern lifestyle, including its use in the garment, fashion and interior design industries

Graphic designers break out of their profession to enter the realm of interior design. Graphic Interiors explores the original, provocative, and utterly contemporary spaces created by graphic designers collaborating with architects. Firms such as Pentagram and Peter Saville blur the distinction between the disciplines with the design of offices, bars, clubs, retail outlets, and residential interiors. In the process, they jettison conventional perceptions of space by transmuting graphics into three dimensions, tapping into a proliferating digital technology, and engaging in a cross-cultural fertilization of ideas. The results, explored through concept sketches, computer graphics, and photos, are dramatic.

A sumptuously illustrated, authoritative introduction to the principal architectural and decorating styles of the American house, from Colonial times to the mid-twentieth century.

In this lavishly produced volume, authors Virginia and Lee McAlester explore outstanding landmark houses that exemplify America's major architectural and interior design styles from Colonial times to the mid-twentieth century. These twenty-five houses are illustrated with more than 350 specially commissioned full-color photographs of interior and exterior views, 125 black-and-white line drawings and floor plans, historical paintings, and vintage photographs.

The text not only discusses the houses architectural innovations and design elements but also profiles the architects and their clients. The featured houses were built by many of the country's leading architects — from Alexander Jackson Davis, Richard Morris Hunt, Henry Hobson Richardson, and McKim, Mead and White to Frank Lloyd Wright, the Greene brothers, and Walter Gropius — and owned by some of its most celebrated citizens, including Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, Jay Gould, the Guggenheim's, the Phippses', and the Vanderbilt's. As a result, the book is as much a cultural history as it is an architectural study. The authors also include an informative discussion of each style as it can be seen in vernacular versions around the country.

Located all over the United States, most of the featured houses are open to the public, and the book provides their addresses and other helpful information for visitors. Great American Houses and Their Architectural Styles will be irresistible to all house lovers, architects, and designers, and will give readers a deeper understanding and appreciation of our rich architectural heritage.

The mythical Mediterranean. Where to get lost — in style and comfort

The Mediterranean is a mythical place, with three continents – Europe, Africa and Asia – and 21 countries sharing its coastline. These disparate cultures are all blessed with its fine climate, luxuriant fauna and flora, and the intense blues of its sea. Angelika Taschen has discovered the very best of this legendary region. Included here are the glamorous Eden-Roc on the Côte d’Azur, the stylish Monte Carlo Beach created by India Mahdavi, the hotel Stella Maris north of Portofino – accessible only by boat or trekking – and of course the famous Amalfi Coast with its numerous beautiful hotels. Add to these the tiny hotel on the small Croatian island of Lopud, the exclusive Perivolas in Santorini, and last but not least, the new branch of the Hôtel Nord-Pinus in Tangier, looking out at the Straits of Gibraltar.

Highlights include the Hôtel Le Corbusier in the "Cité Radieuse", a Le Corbusier building in the residential district of Marseille, built in 1952; Casadelmar on Corsica, set in beautiful gardens overlooking Porto Vecchio, where every room has a sea view; and the enchanting private rocky beach Cala Piccola of the remote hotel Torre di Cala Piccola on the little-known Tuscan island of Argentario, which takes you back to 1960s Italy. Other gems include the charming La Locanda del Barbablù (with only six rooms) on the mythical island of Stromboli, set in the shadow of its active volcano; the amazing hotels in the "masserie" of Apulia, such as the Borgo San Marco in Fasano; and the beautifully designed Orloff Resort near the Old Harbour of Spetses, a small Greek Island which relaxes the eyes and calms the mind.

Skillfully written and richly illustrated, Barons of Business looks into the lives and fortunes of the ambitious individuals like Calvin Coolidge, who believed that "the business of America is business." Beginning with the colonial era, when trade was overtaking landholding as a way to get rich, Barons of Business follows the restless careers of our most brilliant and driven merchants, industrialists, and financiers as they master a new economic world of textiles, railroads, oil, and steel. With the twentieth century comes fresh opportunities: automobiles, motion pictures, broadcasting, publishing and retailing on a massive scale, and the vast horizon of high technology. Meet John Hancock, colonial Boston’s "limousine liberal," and learn how John Jacob Astor parlayed success in the fur trade into status as Manhattan’s master landlord and richest man in America—only to be eclipsed by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who leaped like a nimble Croesus from steamships to railroads. Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford are here, as well as J.P. Morgan, William Randolph Hearst, Howard Hughes, Malcolm Forbes, Warren Buffett, Steven Spielberg, and Bill Gates. Barons of Business brings together more than forty individuals for whom the business of America was indeed business—and who excelled at it beyond anyone’s dreams. Except, perhaps, their own.
