Sustainable architecture is one of the most popular trends today. With dense urban living and less green space available, green walls and roofs are helping to fill that gap. These living structures can be created with vegetation, which helps to absorb rainwater, provide insulation, and lower temperatures while creating a habitat for natural flora and fauna.

'Green Walls Green Roofs' features projects from all over the world, showing how these elements work in various climates. Ranging from the tropical houses in Singapore to inner-city buildings in North America, this richly illustrated book will show you how living architecture can enrich our world.

A definitive survey of the glorious British landscapes designed by Humphry Repton, whose influence is felt everywhere from the rolling meadows and kitchen gardens of English estates to New York City’s Central Park.

Widely acknowledged as the last great landscape designer of the eighteenth century, Humphry Repton created work that survives as a bridge between the picturesque theory of Capability Brown and the pastoral philosophy of Frederick Law Olmsted.

By turns inspired by and in opposition to the grandeur of Brown’s estates, Repton’s contribution to the British landscape encompassed a tremendous range, from subtle adjustments that emphasized the natural features of the countryside to deliberate interventions that challenged the notion of the picturesque. This remarkable book explores 15 of Repton’s most celebrated landscapes—from the early maturity of his gardens at Courteenhall and Mulgrave Castle to more adventurous landscapes at Stanage, Brightling, and Endsleigh that would point the way toward how we envision parkland today.

With photography by Joe Cornish commissioned specially for the book, and including reproductions of key illustrations and plans for garden design from the famous red books that shed light on Repton’s vision and process, this book illuminates some of Britain’s most beautiful gardens and parks — and the masterful mind behind their creation.

About the Authors:

John Phibbs is a renowned garden historian with more than 30 years’ experience in the management and restoration of historic landscapes. He is the author of Capability Brown: Designing the English Landscape

Joe Cornish is an award-winning landscape photographer and an honorary fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, with a studio and gallery in Yorkshire, England.

A white-walled city perched between Morocco and Europe, Tangier was long a haven for the literary and artistic avant-garde — and black sheep — of Europe and America. Now a new generation of residents are blending color, pattern, and taste to create an interior aesthetic all their own. Inside Tangier explores a selection of these exceptional properties and their eccentric inhabitants — from antiques dealer and collector Gordon Watson and interior designer Frank de Biasi to the late fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and antiques dealer Christopher Gibbs — providing rare insights into the sometimes bohemian, sometimes extravagant, but always stylish “Tangerine” lifestyle.

About the Authors:

Nicolò Castellini Baldissera is the great-grandson of renowned Italian architect Piero Portaluppi and an accomplished interior designer in his own right. His commissions have taken him across Italy, to Paris, Gstaad, Tangier, South Africa, and New York. Based in London, he has had a home in Tangier for over a decade.

Milan-born photographer Guido Taroni has shot campaigns for some of Italy’s leading fashion houses and regularly contributes to a variety of noted publications including Architectural Digest and Cabana. Taroni’s first book — The Interiors and Architecture of Renzo Mongiardino: A Painterly Vision — was published in 2017 by Rizzoli.

A house by the sea should be a house of dreams. Where windows and doors are thrown open to the ocean, and gusts of cool, salty air turn us all into kids again -- buoyant and joyful.

Spending childhood days on the beach and in the magical, romantic chaos of her family's rambling house internationally renowned interior designer Celerie Kemble has a deep-rooted connection to the sun and surf. However, in the summer of 2004, Kemble laid eyes on a wild swath of jungle in the Dominican Republic next to minty-blue water and an endless stretch of golden sand, she fell madly in love. Over many years, she designed a home away from home there, an island retreat -- a clubhouse and a grouping of family homes and guesthouses -- suffused with light and air, full of indoor and outdoor rooms for relaxation. In her latest book, Island Whimsy, Kemble recounts the deeply personal and creative journey of designing Playa Grande and bringing this labor of love to life.

The chapters of this book are organized around the different ways Kemble sought to braid her family's story into the larger landscape of Playa Grande and to provide inspiration, joy, and respite to all who come. "Fantasy" looks at the way she used whimsical, dreamlike elements -- from the latticework cabanas by the pool to the lamb statues on the property who "mow" the lawns -- throughout the property to create a sense of play and possibility. "Light, Salt, Air" describes how she went about bringing the most precious elements of the beach into the homes themselves, creating a feeling of flow and permeability, and reminding visitors constantly of where they are. "In the Jungle" looks at the design cues she took from the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest surrounding Playa Grande to create an alluring tension between chaos and refinement. "Sweet & Dark" examines the surprising color combinations that tango into life in the tropics -- whether in the form of tribal prints in hot Gauguin colors mixed with Jordan-almond pastels or handmade objects like a papier-mâché lobster mask that brings a shout of spirit to a room. Finally, "Texture" focuses on the powerful impact that thoughtfully layered materials -- from rough, local coquina stone and painted antique wicker to the smooth polished cotton of Dutch wax prints -- have on a space.

Throughout this lovingly crafted book, ideas abound for anyone decorating a sunny home or fantasizing about spending time in one. Kemble shares inspiration for creating a sense of openness to the sea, sand, and sky; offering places to wash sandy feet or perfect viewing spots for a sunset-saturated drink; and infusing spaces with invitation, welcome, and magic.

About the Author:

Celerie Kemble is a partner in Kemble Interiors, Inc., a decorating firm founded in 1982. Celerie has been featured in Architectural Digest (including as an AD100 Designer), Elle Décor (where she is a perennial member of the A-List), House BeautifulVogueHarper's BazaarThe Wall Street JournalTown & CountryVeranda, and more. A detailed examination of the beautiful and sensitively realized addition to the famed Portland Japanese Garden by contemporary Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

Kengo Kuma: Portland Japanese Garden introduces the star Japanese architect's first public project in the United States. Kuma won the Portland Japanese Garden invitational competition by proposing a design that, while executed with contemporary materials and the latest construction technology, also builds on the principles of traditional architecture and craftsmanship. The resulting group of small buildings superbly blends with its magnificent natural environment and provides an outstanding example of Kuma's artistry of seamlessly connecting nature and architecture as well as past and present without falling into the trap of mimicry or sentimentality.

The book includes chapters on the reverence of nature and Japanese culture, on architecture and gardens in Japan, on the architecture of Kengo Kuma beyond the garden, and on craftsmanship and design, as well as on the new buildings and the garden itself, which is widely considered the most beautiful such garden outside Japan.

About the Authors:

Botond Bognar is Professor and Edgar A. Tafel Endowed Chair in Architecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Professor Bognar is an internationally renowned scholar of the history and theories of contemporary Japanese architecture and urbanism. He is the recipient of several distinguished awards and recognitions including an Arnold O. Beckman Fellowship, a Japan Foundation Fellowship, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Cultural Appreciation Prize, and many others. Balázs Bognár is an architect and partner at Kengo Kuma & Associates in Tokyo, Japan, and served as project architect for the "cultural crossing" at the Portland Japanese Garden. Kengo Kuma is a celebrated Japanese architect and principal of Kengo Kuma and Associates. He is a professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Tokyo.

Author Katia Lysy, Prologue by Benedetta Origo, Photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale

Discover La Foce, the Renaissance villa and classically inspired twentieth-century garden, at the dawn of its hundredth anniversary — once a barren Tuscan estate brought to life through the extraordinary vision and determination of Iris and Antonio Origo.

In 1924, English-born biographer and writer Iris Origo (1902–1988) and her husband, Antonio, purchased La Foce, a sprawling estate centered around a half-ruined fifteenth-century villa with a dream that was as ambitious as it was audacious. Guided by a deep-seated desire to make a difference, the Origos dedicated their lives to transforming an impoverished terrain into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards. With English architect Cecil Pinsent, they refurbished the house and designed an elegant terraced garden with box hedges, a rose garden, fountains, and a wisteria-covered pergola.

The dramatic story of La Foce — from the taming of the wild valley and personal loss to wartime strife — is told by the Origos’ granddaughter Katia Lysy, with reminiscences by Benedetta Origo, the couple’s elder daughter. The letters and diaries of Iris Origo weave beautifully into a personal narrative of the creation of the property and the people behind it. Newly commissioned photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a foldout annotated view of the property, and a recently discovered cache of unpublished images of the creation of the garden in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of the magnificent property.

About the Authors:

Katia Lysy is a journalist and a literary translator. She now assists her mother, Benedetta Origo, in the management and development of the family estate of La Foce. Benedetta Origo is the daughter of Iris and Antonio Origo and the owner of La Foce. Simon Upton is one of the foremost names in interiors photography, with more than twenty-five years of published work to his credit. Matteo Carassale is an Italian photographer who has contributed work to international travel, interior, garden, and nature magazines.

A revealing glimpse into the private sketchbooks of the world’s leading landscape and garden designers

Garden and landscape designers are adept at interpreting outdoor spaces and transforming them into creatively conceived environments. Their ideas rarely come spontaneously:?rather, the thoughtful designer considers a space from different perspectives or for several seasons, working out spacing, planting, materials and colour schemes in detailed preparatory sketchbooks.

For this book, Tim Richardson, Director of the acclaimed Chelsea Fringe gardening festival in London, has selected thirty-seven talented landscape designers who are notable for the immense energy and creativity of their preparatory work.

The best samples from the personal sketchbooks are presented here with concise profiles on their training, inspirations and process.

From clear perspective drawings to more abstract, experimental compositions, and quick freehand squiggles on napkins to measured topographical mapping, many of which are works of art in their own right, Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks is an insightful, practical guide that allows a peek into the world of leading landscape designers.

About the Author:

Tim Richardson is the former landscape editor at Wallpaper*, gardens editor at Country Life and founding editor of New Eden. He is the author of numerous books on landscape design, including The Vanguard Landscapes and Gardens of Martha SchwartzAvant GardenersFuturescapes and Landscape and Garden Design Sketchbooks, published by Thames & Hudson.

The landscape architect visibly modifies land and open spaces with the objective of applying the most artistic transcription of architectural language by working with both animate and inanimate physical structures which arise from geographical and social structures, as well as various technical and economical situations. For this reason, the driving force behind any competent and creative planning solution is the imagination.

The landscaping projects featured in this book mainly illustrate designs adopted for new sites and the expert restoration of others, including some with very different uses.

This book represents an "account" interspersed with various projects, a theme which takes us from large landscaping projects in open spaces, whether on private properties or out in the wilds, to the more complex installations or structures such as landscape bridges.

The stunning interiors and glorious gardens of New Orleans’s unrivaled jewel and architectural masterpiece. Longue Vue House and Gardens, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and listed as a national historic landmark, was designed and built between 1934 and 1942 by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman and architects Charles and William Platt for Edgar Bloom and Edith Rosenwald Stern, New Orleans’s foremost mid-twentieth-century philanthropists and civil-rights activists. The mansion and its surrounding eight acres of garden spaces, with varied designs ranging from the formal to the wild, draw upon Southern architectural traditions and native Louisiana flora, even as they echo the contemporaneous garden-design movement that set the stage for the creation of some of the most breathtaking garden estates in the country. Lush photography, supporting architectural drawings, and an informative text bring the main house and gardens to life and establish the estate as an enduring symbol to its creators’ contributions to building a just society.

About the Authors:

Charles Davey is the Design and Production Director for the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s magazine The Classicist, as well as a writer and independent book producer. His latest book, Fessenden House, about a house in Washington, DC, was privately published. Her books and articles focus on contemporary architecture and urban planning in the Americas. She has also served on the board of directors of Longue Vue since 2004.

Features 20 gardens by contemporary Japanese garden design masters.

Introduction by lauded designer Chisao Shigemori, grandson of legendary garden master Mirei Shigemori.

A Japanese garden represents the essence of Japanese culture, embodying the country’s spirit and philosophy. It has a distinctive style, quality of materials and emphasis on details. Modern Japanese Gardens captures this spirit through the work of 20 contemporary Japanese garden design masters.

The gardens featured in Modern Japanese Gardens are drawn from a variety of locations in Japan, placed in different settings, from private houses and temples to cafés, restaurants and stores. Some are of traditional appearance; others have a distinctly modern aesthetic. In common, all the gardens have been influenced by Japanese culture and society, created by masters who are internationally recognised and lauded for their skills.

Modern Japanese Gardens includes insightful text on each garden, revealing the concept behind the design and the use of plants, alongside photography exploring both the detail and the overall aesthetic that shape the design.

Shinobu Sawada is the editor-in-chief of leading Japanese garden magazine Niwa, having previously worked as an editor of Japanese interior design magazine Indoor green.
