How can houses be upgraded to meet today’s demands – from living comfort via energy efficiency to digital requirements? How can the fusion of historic and new elements be utilized as a design element?

The continued use of existing residential buildings, be it a Renaissance townhouse, a Ming Dynasty atriumhouse, a 19th-century farmhouse, or a post-war bungalow, not only scores with the charm of former years, but actually also with an advantagous ecological balance. Based on carefully selected works, this book presents the whole scope of possibilities for extensions and conversions – from annexes, via new designs for existing spaces, to additional sections, or conceptually merged rooms. All are evidence that preservation is a creative challenge that has many different solutions.

Buildings and spaces bearing traces of the past that are integrated into new functional and artistic concepts are galvanizing the architecture and design scene. As a result of the increased awareness of sustainability issues and growing appreciation for existing building structures more and more often the decision is being made to convert rather than demolish – sometimes also because of economic considerations. This volume explores the question of the functional and creative possibilities emerging from revitalization that respects existing structures.

The projects carefully selected for this volume demonstrate their worth through sophisticated concepts of utilization and ingenious approaches to design. The existing building structure is not renovated or even restored, but rather left as it is found with traces of past uses, often of its demise, preserved, sometimes carefully enhanced. Whether through aggressive contrast with the new or an interpretation of the existing spaces and surfaces, the interventions always show respect and consideration and establish an enthralling relationship between the old and the new.

Adding. Extending. Transforming. Upgrade breathes new life in forgotten architecture

Upgrade explores architectural and design concepts that seek to enhance and repurpose our surroundings. From slight changes to complete renovations, the spectrum of possibilities is vast. Extensions upon a rooftop. Factories turned into relaxing retreats. Wood additions contrast with antique brick exteriors. Through engaging anecdotes and inspiriting images, Upgrade provides vibrant exemplars and enthusiasm for revamping existing spaces.

Repurposing the unused; a dilapidated barn, a raddled townhome, a historical and fading building façade – these can all be starting points for stunning and inspiring homes. Upgrade displays transformations: be it sheds into playrooms, a garage to a guesthouse, or an alpine hut into a holiday getaway. Hidden in the walls of old structures are possibilities and inspirations that can be realized with any budget; charm and character become the criteria for titivating a residence.

Upgrade offers projects that succeed in finding the balance between the traditional and the modern. Architects share their experiences, motivations, and approaches. Before-and-after photos illustrate the metamorphoses. This is a volume for all who desire a new perspective, for those that prefer to preserve rather than to demolish. What are ruins to some become another’s architectural playground.

The concept of architectural reform has always been conceived as a solution for the conservation of the past into the present. Nowadays, we can say that the rehabilitation or renovation of buildings is an interesting way of solving the architectural problems concerning the new urban, social, environmental and economic realities of the globalized world in which we live.

We are aware of the approaching of the cities' collapse, due to lack of space. The continuous movement of persons around the world and the mix of customs, traditions and cultures lead us into a society which is trying to adapt to a constant change.

The buildings and the architecture must develop and follow this constant rate, reinventing themselves in the light of the new requirements. Change the concept: refurbishing is not only the conservation of elements of great cultural interest (which continue to be essential for the preservation of our historical heritage). The rehabilitation's ideas have to expand and explore all the areas, from private to commercial, from industrial to the public, from large to small, finding constant meeting points between the special and mutable needs of the society.

The objective of this book is to give an example of the different possibilities to refurbish architectures, showing new ideas for new concepts of space. How an architect can modify and reinvent the functions, highlighting the possibility to play with the space already built searching new solutions for new users.

The New Old House presents 18 private historic homes, from North America to Europe, and traces the ingenious ways architects have revitalized and refreshed them for a new generation

Most of the renovations occurred in the last decade, but all of the homes have origins reaching back into the past, in some cases hundreds of years. Projects and firms featured include Greenwich House, Allan Greenberg; Longbranch, Jim Olson; Astley Castle, Witherford Watson Mann; Hunsett Mill, Acme; Cotswolds House, Richard Found; plus more than a dozen others. These projects address such timely factors as sustainability, multiculturalism, preservation, and style, and demonstrate the unique beauty and elegance that comes from the interweaving of modernity and history.

New Town House brings together a collection of some of the more interesting and creative town house projects which have been recently constructed. The focus on recently completed projects allows for an analysis of the challenges of integrating new buildings in existing residential areas.

All of the featured projects share one main characteristic their ability to make the most out of limited spaces in creative ways. Within the basic typology of a flat building between parallel walls, a world of possibilities is opened up: spaces full of light, endless staircases, curtain walls, facades which spread completely out to the street or enclose mysterious gardens and interior patios.

The book is a compendium of homes, including apartments and single-family houses, that have been remodeled to suit contemporary lifestyle needs.

Rehabilitations of living spaces are often done to reanimate existing constructions that, over time, have become impractical, if not obsolete. The challenge is to adapt these existing buildings to contemporary standards while maintaining what might still be useful or what we like about them. Most old buildings are very compartmentalized, reflecting the human habits of their time and the available building technology.

Nowadays, we like to live in much more open and airy spaces — and new building methods allow for the removal of walls that ultimately free up space. We renovate and upgrade living spaces to various degrees, ranging anywhere from upgrading fixtures and appliances to removing and reconstructing walls and expanding buildings. While extensive work is sometimes required, these rehabilitations can result in stunning transformations. Many add comfort and increase utility, not to mention that the investment generally adds value to the property.

This inspirational book showcases a range of rehabilitated projects, from ones that begin by totally stripping out interiors to a clean slate, to less extensive work that might be limited to cosmetic changes or simple finish and fixture upgrades.

Existing dwellings have proved themselves flexible to changing necessities, and they are key to the regeneration of our living environment.
