The limitations of the Modernist palette have long been recognized and contemporary architects are looking to the ancient values of stone to give new expression to their ideas. Its permanence is increasingly used to express a sense of civic stability or ground the fluid forms of contemporary architecture. New Stone Architecture explores the ideas that underpin todays stone renaissance. The introduction uncovers stones expressive possibilities and describes the latest technologies that make the new forms possible. This is followed by 33 case studies from around the world, including work by Michael Hopkins, Kengo Kuma and Renzo Piano.

Societal and economic transitions have left numerous buildings redundant. Thanks to the esteem enjoyed by any sort of historic building fabric, an increasing awareness of sustainability issues as well as economic considerations, unused structures are now frequently being examined to determine what kind of new use might be suitable. These considerations take place in an area of tension between the poles of functional use of existing architecture as raw material, conscious inclusion of historical significance and radical new architectural interpretations.

This volume presents more than 100 projects from around the world which are distinguished by a change of function they have undergone: from a police station to a cinema, from a bunker to an office, from a transformer station to a synagogue and from a swimming pool to an art center, among other creative re-uses. The innovative buildings and spaces are therefore emerging with layers superimposed on top of one another; the original function usually still provides the scale and structure, into which a new matrix of utilization is installed.

Remodels offer opportunities for adaptation on several levels: Change in use of a space, change in spatial layout or spatial interrelations, change in connection to the greater exterior environment, or just a change in the mood or ambiance of existing spaces.

This book selects more than 50 excellent projects of renovated buildings worldwide. The architects adjust measures to local conditions and ingeniously carry out reposition and design for the buildings’ exterior, interior and landscape environment, thus creating some resurrection for them. Each project inside this book has its peculiar characteristics. Some focus on ecological and sustainable parts, such as rebuilding a factory neighboring to residential communities into a library, which decreases pollution, while at the same time produces some cultural atmosphere.

Rainwater collection, recycled use of waste and reservation of plants are all the starting points for reconstruction. Some emphasize on the functionality of buildings, such as carrying out reconstruction towards historical administrative building, hence acquiring better functions and more attractive appearance and helping it become landmark architecture. Some stick to reservation and inheritance of historical culture, which integrates new elements while continuing the original historical style and features, thus bringing out new life for the buildings.

Reviving is a detailed study of significant restorations and remodels of houses built between 1900 and 1950 in Australia.

Now highly sought-after, structures from this era are being cleverly reworked by architects to reveal stunning contemporary spaces within. The houses featured are all very different, both in terms of style and scale. Some are almost palatial; others little more than what were once known as worker's cottages. However, irrespective of size or location, all of these houses exemplify how successful renovations can be achieved from a number of different approaches.

The Roof Construction Manual is a comprehensive reference work on the construction of pitched roofs, containing over 1800 plans and 220 photographs. Thirteen fundamental roof types and the relevant materials including thatch, wood, slate, tile, concrete, fibrous cement, bitumen, glass, metal, membranes, and synthetic materials are documented in detail. Essential topics such as ventilation, vapour and wind seals, insulation and drainage, renovation and energy conservation are examined. As with all the Construction Manuals, some 38 built examples illustrate the theoretical details, paying particular attention to important features such as the ridge, hip, eaves, roof valley, verge, and penetration. A compact presentation of the load-bearing physics and structures as well as current norms and standards make this volume an indispensable standard work for all architects and engineers.

Since streets become increasingly crowded, living on the top of a building promises privacy and distance. Rooftops have become the symbol of a new lifestyle - an extension and exclusive enjoyment of an area traditionally unused: the architectural crown of a building has been transformed into a new area for work or living. Architects, designers and town planners have seen in this final section of a building their last chance to let their fantasies run free and to dramatically shape the cities' skylines with extensions, attics and unique tops. This volume delivers a very close insight in the divers possibilities of the roof design of residential, corporative and other buildings. About 200 projects present the different types of roofs: Pitched roofs, flat roofs with planting vegetation, roof garden as a pool area or further floor space. An index with the contact dates of the designers is enclosed.

Steel is one of the most versatile materials available in the construction industry and its many applications have enabled architects and engineers to go far beyond what was once considered possible. The second volume in this new series documents all aspects of steel as a construction material. Just like the Glass Construction Manual, this volume first looks at the historical development of building with steel. This is followed by several chapters which examine to a high degree of technical detail the physical properties of the material, the principles of construction using steel and the wide spectrum of the use of steel elements. The final chapter presents 54 examples which illustrate the many applications of steel in construction-from simple halls to complex multistorey buildings. These examples were selected because of their innovative use of steel, demonstrating its great potential for minimising the necessary materials and montage. For ease of comparison all the plans have been drawn to the same scale. The volume concludes with an extensive bibliography and a listing of the relevant norms and regulations, making this work an indispensable reference for all architects and engineers.

After many were demolished or 'modernised' beyond recognition in the post-war period, old houses were rediscovered around the 1980s as people moved back to the inner city. Period features were tenderly replaced but many of the buildings remained in their original state: small, dark and impractical for families living in the 21st century.

This book looks at some of the innovative methods employed by architects to transform these heritage beauties into practical family homes. Blending old and new to support contemporary living, while still respecting the past, is the challenge faced by architects and renovators.

The many projects in this book have been collected from around the world and provide abundant ideas and words of advice for anyone faced with the daunting prospect of renovating an older home.

In this book new trends of wall design are presented by means of numerous projects. The use of new materials allows bright colours and extraordinary patterns, new forms and structures. The wall is not longer only an essential but also a creative element of interior design. As a vertical section of the building, a wall structures the interior, organizes it into private and public areas, forms lines of sight and points of reference. Walls change the impression of the room and its volume. The design with extravagant wallpaper can transform a home into a shimmering place with little effort and give your own four walls an individual character. With self-adhesive motifs like the wall stickers from" a better tomorrow", butterflies can settle in the big city and set temporary accents.
