"Public art is one of the most important elements that define a city. Public installations echo the character and spirit of a time and place, and remind us all of the imperative need for creativity and imagination in our daily lives."
(Carole Feuerman)

Art has always made a substantial contribution to cultural identity. This impact is considerably enhanced when a work of art is created for a public place and takes on a space-defining function. Whatever the shape, size or medium, art in public, accessible to all, attracts attention. Its presence provokes thought, questions assumptions, expresses values, and adds new qualities to communities and cities.

In this volume, selected works introduce the history of public art over 4,500 years of historical eras and styles, including world-famous landmarks such as the Great Sphinx of Giza, the Trevi Fountain or the Statue of Liberty. The majority of art works presented here are from modern times, allowing an in-depth look at contemporary works by important artists like Alexander Calder, Nam June Paik, Jeff Koons, Eduardo Chillida or Ai Weiwei.

Sir William Chambers (1722–96) was a Swedish-British architect with an unusual track record. He designed imaginative castle buildings and luxurious interiors as well as simple and rational utilitarian architecture. After growing up in Sweden, he worked mostly in England, where he became a favorite of King George III. But throughout his life he emphasized his Swedish background and also designed buildings in Sweden. A Treatise on Civil Architecture is a handbook in architecture, where Chambers wanted to explain the basics of the art of building in a pedagogical way. Even today it serves as an excellent guide to the secrets of classical architecture with concise texts and beautiful plates with both details and overviews of different building types and their functions.

About the Authors:

Frank Salmon is Associate Professor of the History of Art at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. Since 2021 he has been Director of the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at Cambridge. He is an architectural historian specialising in British and European architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Among his many publications are the book Building on Ruins: The Rediscovery of Rome and English Architecture.

Clive Aslet is an award-winning architectural historian and journalist. During a long association with Country Life, he was editor for 13 years. As author of The Edwardian Country House, The American Country House, Landmarks of Britain and Villages of Britain, he is an authority on the countryside, British history and architecture, and life at the turn of the twentieth century on both sides of the Atlantic. A lifelong advocate of Classicism, he helped establish the Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at Cambridge in 2021.

Since Carl Benz’ 1886 patented three wheeled motorcar the automobile has changed public space more than any other invention. New building types had to be created to house the car when immobile, so when it is purchased, serviced or parked. From the beginning architects have transformed the purely functional buildings into landmarks, places of wonder and experience.

Automobile Architecture presents the most interesting contemporary showrooms, gas stations and parking structures. It becomes clear that a new paradigm has emerged, one that places functionality, aesthetics and sustainability at the center of the conceptualization of automobile architecture. The most interesting design concepts are featured from prominent as well as upcoming architects.

Un-volumetric architecture expresses a new condition acquired in dealing with and designing open and public space from the nineties to today.

This volume is therefore intended to offer a theoretical reflection conducted through 100 construction projects worldwide that have faced the difficult challenge of delineating and building a new identity for that transient and continually metamorphosing category that is the contemporary open space.

The considerable creative freedom, the low budget, the sophisticated relationship with the landscape and geography, the dialogue with new metropolitan realities, the possibility of offering temporary solutions, all make these projects among the richest, freest and most stimulating collections currently available, through the work of major protagonists and many emerging authors on the international scene.

The volume is divided into 10 sections: Surfaces, Vertical, Enclosures, Design, Shelters, Environment, Earthworks, Figures, Technique and Events, which attempt to accompany the reader around a complex world of solutions and projects ranging from the traditional public space to the landscape, from the rock concert to the provisional space for cultural and artistic events, from the design of infrastructures to the most sophisticated garden.

Each section is introduced by a small essay, written by such important authors on the contemporary scene as Denise Scott Brown, James Wines, Pippo Ciorra, Wes Jones, Enrico Morteo, Alberto Ferlenga, Ilhyun Kim, Kengo Kuma, Arie Graafland, Juan Purcell and Bernardo Secchi, who attempt to tackle the theme of the contemporary open space, offering unprecedented stimuli for theoretical reflection.

Protecting human beings has always been one of the most genuine purposes of architecture. Due to the increase in global warming in recent years, protection from the sun is becoming one of its most important functions. This challenge has resulted in numerous trendsetting technological innovations and amazing design concepts, which have been collected in this book. Shade is mainly created in three ways: while opaque constructions block off all light, perforated devices as well as translucent materials reduce the exposure to light.

Creating Shade presents all conceivable types and forms of shade-providing design made of a host of different materials such as wood, fabrics, concrete, and a great number of synthetic materials. The collection includes elegant pergolas, extravagant pavilions, and roofed piazzas, as well as a fascinating solution for a canopy over a Roman excavation site and the spectacular Metropol Parasol in Seville. Outstanding serial products are presented along with individually constructed creations.

A spectacular global survey of the buildings 'greening' the world's cities, whose conception and realization bring architecture and horticulture into a sustainable whole

Concrete horizons, urban sprawl, high-density living: never have our cities and their buildings been in greater need of greening. Yet what’s required is more than an occasional vertical garden or living roof. Featuring seventy projects from around the world – some built, some ongoing, some from the future – Garden City looks at the increasingly inventive ways in which architects and designers are incorporating nature into the built environment, transforming the city for the benefit of all.

About the Author:

Anna Yudina is co-founder and editor-in-chief of Monitor magazine. She has curated a number of international architecture and design exhibitions, including shows on Zaha Hadid and Jakob & MacFarlane, both represented in this book. Yudina is also the author of Phase: The Architecture of Jakob & MacFarlane and Eske Rex: Silent Action.

Increasingly, a major focus of land use planning is on greening the cities.

Public gardens, greened façades, city parks, and green public squares have considerably gained in prominence in recent years. They have distinct social, ecological, and economic functions in addition to the importance to the structure and appearance of urban spaces. Green areas in the city serve as leisure and communication areas while having a positive effect on the microclimate by offering a habitat for flora and fauna. What is more, they are an increasingly important factor in the evaluation of real estate locations.

Green City Spaces shows the different trends of this discipline at the intersection of landscape architecture and urban planning. Particularly fascinating in this context is the interplay between international trends, regional traditions as well as the climatic and other on-site realities of each city. This volume presents more than 80 projects in detail, highlighting the multitude of possibilities of green spaces planning that make life in the city more worth living.

An illustrated tour through New York’s five boroughs and the past 100 years of its modern architecture, told through the charming yet bold drawings of Lukas Novotny.

Modern New York: The Illustrated Story of Architecture in the Five Boroughs from 1920 to Today takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride through the changing fortunes of New York City throughout the last hundred years, from the heights of the Roaring Twenties and “Mad Men” Fifties, to the depths of the Great Depression Thirties, through to “Fear City” in the Seventies, and beyond. Many of the featured buildings won’t be found in city guides and some of them are no longer around — but each one played an integral part in the fascinating story of the five boroughs.

The ten decades are explored through some 150 buildings in all corners of the city, from Rockefeller Center to the Pan Am Building to the Standard Hotel, as well as treasures lost, such as the 1927 Savoy-Plaza Hotel, and treasures rescued, such as the astonishingly glamourous 1924 American Radiator Building, now the Bryant Park Hotel. New York City has been described from every possible angle through thousands of books. But not many of them venture out of Manhattan, let alone visit all five boroughs. Out of these, only a handful is accessible to non-experts and fewer still are entertaining and illustrated. And none of them offer such a crisp and visually unified picture of the Big Apple.

About the Author:

Lukas Novotny is an illustrator and graphic designer based in London. Originally from Prague, Novotny studied architecture and civil engineering before moving to the UK. In 2018 he wrote and illustrated Modern London, which was shortlisted for the British Book Design Awards 2019.

An amazing archive of New York City Transit Authority memorabilia provides a unique look at the city’s past.

New York City Transit Authority: Objects originated as a photography experiment. In 2011, New York photographer Brian Kelley began documenting collections of used MetroCards in his Brooklyn studio, arranging them in various grids with the goal of perfecting the lighting of an image. His brother suggested he make the grids more interesting by finding other types of cards. Having exhausted his search of discarded MetroCards in many of the city’s 472 subway stations, Kelley turned to eBay for new finds.

The online rabbit-hole gave him a crash course in the history of NYC transportation. He discovered tokens dating back to 1860, a ticket stub from 1885 when it cost three cents to take the train across the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as patches, matchbooks, tokens, timetables, pins and signs, posting his photographs of these finds on Tumblr and Instagram. Six years on, many MTA employees follow and advocate his project, sometimes contacting him with information and tips on rare items. As the collection grew, Kelley recognized that there were no comparable digital archives documenting the city’s transportation evolution.

______________

New York City Transit Authority: Objects contains over 400 artifacts related to the New York City Subway, collected and documented by photographer Brian Kelley.

Kelley started collecting MTA MetroCards in 2011, and he quickly became fascinated by other Subway-related objects. This catalogue is the first of its kind — presenting a previously uncollated archive of ephemera dating back to the 1850s.

California, once the epitome of car culture, is now leading the green movement, transitioning away from the internal combustion engine and to some extent the car — and having to rethink how we live, as this extraordinary urban planning manifesto explores.

Drawing together original research, design studies, and cultural essays, Renewing the Dream offers the first comprehensive look at the changes remaking the mobility landscape of Southern California—and the opportunities to reappropriate vast tracts of the city for new uses. Edited by James Sanders and produced with the global architecture studio Woods Bagot, this book explores the forces propelling this shift as well as its controversial impact on Los Angeles, as a city once famed for its car-oriented, low-rise landscape is transformed into a more diverse, more dense, more complex place.

This many-sided portrait offers essays by a distinguished group of writers, designs for the city’s future, and studies of how the new mobility might allow areas now dedicated to parking and gas stations to be reimagined. Rounding out its portrait are historic photographs, maps, Hollywood images, and the artwork of David Hockney, Catherine Opie, Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, Carlos Almaraz, and stills from La La Land to Chinatown. The book is a thought piece on the future of American cities, with lessons that will carry resonance all around the globe.
