Increasingly, a major focus of land use planning is on greening the cities.

Public gardens, greened façades, city parks, and green public squares have considerably gained in prominence in recent years. They have distinct social, ecological, and economic functions in addition to the importance to the structure and appearance of urban spaces. Green areas in the city serve as leisure and communication areas while having a positive effect on the microclimate by offering a habitat for flora and fauna. What is more, they are an increasingly important factor in the evaluation of real estate locations.

Green City Spaces shows the different trends of this discipline at the intersection of landscape architecture and urban planning. Particularly fascinating in this context is the interplay between international trends, regional traditions as well as the climatic and other on-site realities of each city. Bearing witness to the tensions of public space in Europe: this is the aim of the European Prize for Urban Public Space. It was established in 2000 by the Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) and now counts with the collaboration of six other European institutions. This book is the first publication about the prize, which celebrates its 10th issue. It presents a selection of projects from former and new winners and theoretical texts from Manuel de Solà-Morales, president of the 2008 award, Dietmar Steiner, director of Architekturzentrum Wien and a jury member since 2002, the architect and president of the 2010 jury, Rafael Moneo and David Bravo, secretary of the 2010 award.

An illustrated tour through New York’s five boroughs and the past 100 years of its modern architecture, told through the charming yet bold drawings of Lukas Novotny.

Modern New York: The Illustrated Story of Architecture in the Five Boroughs from 1920 to Today takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride through the changing fortunes of New York City throughout the last hundred years, from the heights of the Roaring Twenties and “Mad Men” Fifties, to the depths of the Great Depression Thirties, through to “Fear City” in the Seventies, and beyond. Many of the featured buildings won’t be found in city guides and some of them are no longer around — but each one played an integral part in the fascinating story of the five boroughs.

The ten decades are explored through some 150 buildings in all corners of the city, from Rockefeller Center to the Pan Am Building to the Standard Hotel, as well as treasures lost, such as the 1927 Savoy-Plaza Hotel, and treasures rescued, such as the astonishingly glamourous 1924 American Radiator Building, now the Bryant Park Hotel. New York City has been described from every possible angle through thousands of books. But not many of them venture out of Manhattan, let alone visit all five boroughs. Out of these, only a handful is accessible to non-experts and fewer still are entertaining and illustrated. And none of them offer such a crisp and visually unified picture of the Big Apple.

Lukas Novotny is an illustrator and graphic designer based in London. Originally from Prague, Novotny studied architecture and civil engineering before moving to the UK. In 2018 he wrote and illustrated Modern London, which was shortlisted for the British Book Design Awards 2019.

Their publication sheds light on Burle Marx’s distinctive ethic and aesthetic of landscape, as “the real art of living.”

Gareth Doherty is Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture and Director of the Master in Landscape Architecture program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He is the author of Paradoxes of Green: Landscapes of a City-State, published in 2017 by the University of California Press. Doherty’s edited books include: Roberto Burle Marx Lectures: Landscape as Art and Urbanism and Is Landscape…? Essays on the Identity of Landscape, edited with Charles Waldheim. Doherty is a founding editor of the New Geographies journal and editor-in-chief of New Geographies 3: Urbanisms of Color. Doherty edited Ecological Urbanism with Mohsen Mostafavi, which has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese, with forthcoming translations in Arabic and Persian.

Roberto Burle Marx was among the leading landscape architects of the twentieth century. Burle Marx's work encompassed a range of scales from private gardens, such as the Fazenda Vargem Grande and his home, Sítio Burle Marx, to urban squares and large-scale public projects, including Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beachfront and Flamengo Park, and the Parque del Este in Caracas. In partnership with Haruyoshi Ono from 1968, the significance of Burle Marx's landscape architecture is often attributed to his use of abstract curves and forms that rarely employ symmetry, and his use of tropical, mainly indigenous Brazilian, flora. Burle Marx was driven by a passionate agenda to improve and conserve landscapes and consequently the lives of the people who live in them.

Since signage systems are created to provide orientation, they must be universally legible and understood by people of all ages and culture. Signs must show the way, and also present the proper information at the proper location. By making effective use of graphics, colors and shapes, a signage system helps to create an identity for spaces.

Signage Designs showcases a great variety of current examples from across the world, indoor and outdoor, ranging from individual buildings like museums, hospitals and stadiums, to larger contexts like subway systems, town districts or entire cities. Volume 1: 100 Years of Urban Planning for Greater Berlin
Volume 2: International Urban Planning Competition for Berlin-Brandenburg 2070. Perspectives from Europe

The ‘new urban municipality of Berlin’, also called Greater Berlin, was created 100 years ago, on 1 October 1920, following a ground-breaking administrative reform. This was a century-defining milestone that transformed Berlin into a world city. The old city of Berlin was merged with 7 other cities, 59 rural communities, and 27 estate districts. As a result, the city’s area increased from 66 to 878 square kilometres, its population from 1.9 to 3.9 million people, virtually overnight. But Greater Berlin did not remain a fixed entity. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new planning and development projects continued to transform the greater urban area, which has grown, seemingly without end, far beyond the boundaries of Berlin.

The two volumes of Unfinished Metropolis are dedicated to the past and future of Greater Berlin. The first volume offers an insight into an array of different topics, such as Berlin’s role as the capital of Germany, its relationship with Brandenburg, and the historical, economic, and social conditions that have driven the growth of the urban area over the centuries. The second volume delves deeper into the designs for the future. It comprehensively documents the International Urban Planning Competition for Berlin-Brandenburg 2070, held by the states’ association of architects and engineers. It also explores how other European capital regions – London, Moscow, Paris, and Vienna – are seeking to ensure sustainable urban development in years to come.
