He was the head of the Art Nouveau and Decorative Arts Department at Phillips Auctioneers, and has also worked at Sotheby's, London. Keith is a regular expert on BBC's perennially popular Antiques Roadshow (UK).

About the Author:

Sarah Andelman founder and former creative director of Colette (1997-2017), the renowned Parisian fashion concept store famous for its edgy show-windows in collaboration with various brands, including Moncler. A former art student at the Ecole du Louvre and Purple magazine intern, Andelman established Colette alongside her mother, Colette Rousseaux, after whom the store was named. The store quickly became renowned for its revolutionary approach to retail, such as weekly product updates, an in-store restaurant, and a gallery space. Since January 2018, Andelman has run her consulting company, Just an Idea, and serves as a curator for various projects.

Mighty Morris. The arts and crafts power of designer William Morris

William Morris was a polymath designer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, associated with England’s Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as well as Arts and Crafts movement. His prolific design work included tiles, embroidery, tapestries, wallpaper, and carpets and championed handcraftsmanship, natural dyes, “art for all”, and beautiful patterns of subtly stylized natural forms.

William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the greatest creative figures of the 19th century. As a visionary designer, as well as a manufacturer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, he pioneered the Arts and Crafts movement of the Victorian era, and left an extraordinary influence on architecture, textile, and interior design.

This richly illustrated book offers a suitably beautiful introduction to Morris’s colourful life and all aspects of his design work, including interiors, tiles, embroidery, tapestries, carpets, and calligraphy. Though best known in his lifetime as a poet and author, it is these exquisite designs that secured Morris’s posthumous reputation. Planches principales de l’œuvre de Jean Bérain, ornemaniste du roi. Ornements de peinture et de sculpture de la galerie d’Apollon au Louvre et du palais des Tuileries

Jean Bérain (1640 – 1711) était le fils d’un arquebusier lorrain à une époque où les armes étaient parfois abondamment gravées à l’eau forte. Il apprit cette technique à l’atelier familial et devint un dessinateur hors pair. Il se rendit bientôt à la capitale pour travailler avec Le Brun, peintre officiel du Roi Louis XIV, puis fut nommé à 34 ans dessinateur de la Chambre et du Cabinet du Roi. Ses créations recouvrent de nombreux domaines comme des décors de fêtes, de carrousels et de pompes funèbres, des pièces d’orfèvrerie, des meubles, des perspectives de jardins, des décorations pour les vaisseaux royaux ou des cartons de tapisserie. Il fut également le décorateur de l’Académie royale de musique et dessina un grand nombre de costumes portés pendant les opéras de Lully. Il fit connaître son œuvre par plusieurs recueils de gravures qui furent abondamment copiés dans l’Europe entière.

Son style remarquable, inséparable du grand siècle français, fut vite adopté partout. Bérain fut le continuateur des peintres de grotesques du XVIe siècle, mais réussit à créer son propre style, bien plus allégé : il abandonna les feuillages d’acanthes auparavant omniprésents et parsema ses gravures de détails pittoresques (singes, oiseaux ou danseurs), préparant ainsi le style rococo.

Il fut également un talentueux décorateur d’intérieur, dessinant des lambris et des plafonds, des peintures et des sculptures qui furent utilisés notamment pour la décoration du Louvre et dans les appartements royaux aux Tuileries. C’est principalement ces ornements qui sont reproduits ici dans un fac-similé de 116 planches gravées au XVIIe siècle, sans texte.
