Clad in white, this year's Select H sticks to its 3-volume format introduced in its last edition, dividing the book into three blocks: Graphic Design, New Media (DVD inclusive) and Schools.

Its daring, innovative design, outlined from its very first issue, Select A, offers a format which is smaller than usual, to emphasize its thickness, while every project featured is presented on a double-page spread.

Select is considered a book of reference in the world of Graphic Design and an essential guide for keeping up-to-date with Spanish creativity, year after year.

Contributors to Select H's selectors team have been: Alberto Salván, Diego Feijóo, Enric Batlle, Astrid Stavro, Xose Teiga, Marga Castaño, Tavo Ponce, Gonzalo Zaragoza, Raquel Pelta, Marina Vilageliu y Hernán Ordoñez.

Selected is not an award, but rather, as its name suggests, it is a "selection" of the best European design projects completed within year 2009 by graphic studios, designers and students from across Europe.

The projects are chosen by a team of renowned professionals - Selectors - from various fields in the visual communication and graphic design industries, who meet to make a selection of the best work pieces among all the entries received. Only the projects which are chosen from their expert point of view are ultimately included in the book.

The annual is presented with an original design and in a special format, smaller than the average yearbook. The book is divided into three different categories (Graphic Design, New Media and Schools) and each project is featured individually on a double-page spread. Instead of being numbered, each edition of Selected is assigned a letter, in alphabetical order, which is also the initial of the font face used in the book. Namely, the first volume in the series, Selected A, refers to the font face AkzidGroBe. This is Index Book's special way of paying homage to typography as an iconic element in design.

Sin and temptation, wisdom and deceit, death and damnation, but also eternity and renewal, protection and healing power - the symbolic meanings of the snake are as manifold as the myths, sagas and legends in which it plays a significant role. The snake led Adam and Eve into temptation in the Garden of Eden, the Uraeus snake was the symbol of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt, the Midgard serpent inhabited the ocean of Germanic mythology, it was the ancient symbol of the art of healing, was worshipped as the snake spirit in India and as a deity in African and Central American cultures.

In all eras and in all cultures, the snake has fascinated humankind and inspired the creation of striking works of art. Serpentina is dedicated for the first time to the whole spectrum of the snake in jewellery, for few artists, jewellers or even the jewellery industry could resist the temptation to incorporate this creature into jewellery design. The examples span everything from Hellenistic snake bangles to the glittering art nouveau creations by Lalique and Fournet, from the luxurious creations by Cartier and Fabergé to the playful objects of contemporary jewellery artists, from snake motifs from Mexico and the golden snakes of the Akan in Ghana to Indian snake jewellery and Japanese snake netsukes. In jewellery the seductive power of the snake is unfailing. Let it put you under its spell!

Summer at the Serpentine. Ten years of temporary pavilions by top architects

Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world’s top architects to design summer pavilions – temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a showplace for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists ranging from Matthew Barney to Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois or Rachel Whiteread.
The pavilions in the Programme that was conceived in 2000 by the Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones, are the work of international architects or design teams who at the time of the Serpentine’s invitation have not completed a building in England. A maximum of six months from invitation to completion is allotted. The only architecture program of its type in the world, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions attract up to 250,000 visitors each summer. The Serpentine Pavilion is regularly ranked in the top 5 most attended architecture and design exhibitions worldwide in The Art Newspaper’s annual survey of museums and galleries visitor figures. The architect Richard Rogers has stated, “The pavilions, erected for reatively little money, are unbelievably good. I coudn’t single one out that I have liked more than the others – they have all been masterpieces.

The projects completed or envisaged include the work of

* Zaha Hadid, 2000
* Daniel Libeskind, 2001
* Toyo Ito, 2002
* Oscar Niemeyer, 2003
* MVRDV, 2004 (un-realised)
* Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond, 2005
* Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, 2006
* Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen, 2007
* Frank Gehry, 2008
* SANAA, 2009
* Jean Nouvel, 2010
* Other works such as Zaha Hadid's temporary 2006 installation Lilas are included in the book as well.

This book is the first to bring together all of the Serpentine Pavilions. Interviews of Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones and Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist complete the description of the pavilions, illustrated by the original drawings by each architect and photos of the completed works.

“A shoe is a very complicated object to design. It is art, but involves mini architecture: materials, techniques, tooling. The end result is a fantasy sculpture to look at, but has another life when it is worn.” - Kobi Levi

Exotic shoes have been around for centuries. Sandals made of solid gold were found in the royal tombs of ancient Egypt. Six hundred years ago, women teetered around Venice in chopines with platforms up to a foot high. And in China, tiny golden lotus shoes were brightly colored and elaborately embroidered. In the twentieth century, Salvatore Ferragamo introduced platform shoes and “invisible” sandals. Beth Levine invented sprint-o-lator mules and topless shoes held to the sole by adhesive. Roger Vivier created the concave stiletto and comma heels for his extravagantly bejeweled concoctions. The last two decades have seen an explosion of creativity in footwear design. Sexy laced-up sandals, sky-high platform heels, and outrageously decorated shoes are seen on fashionable women everywhere, from the catwalk to the street. In Shoegasm, you’ll find page after page of fabulous footwear from fashion icons such as Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Vivienne Westwood, and Alexander McQueen, as well as exciting young designers like Nicholas Kirkwood, Charlotte Olympia, and collaborators Rem D. Koohhaas and Galahad Clark. You’ll also see shoes that are truly wearable art from innovators like Kobi Levi, Julian Hakes, and Marloes Ten Bhomer.
