Zeixs
ID: 4028
Видавництво: Feierabend Unique Books

In this new series, zeixs presents contemporary graphic design from different parts of the world. The first two volumes are dedicated to Scandinavia and Latin America.

Even though during the last decade's globalization seems to have resulted in the different cultures and societies moving closer together, and even though communication and cultural exchange has increased, many regional designs still retain distinctive characteristics.

Latin America

Not surprisingly, the works from Latin America turn out to be pretty vivid and colourful. There seem to be no inhibitions or restraint – the dominant tones range from buoyant and humorous to downright aggressive and provocative.

Whatever the tone may be, the visual impression is always striking. Apparently, the so-called Latin American lifestyle and climate have left their mark on these designs. This is just another proof that design and art are always influenced by the environment in which they are created.

These particularities have been captured in this compilation of exceptional works from such diverse categories as poster design, advertising, and illustrations.

Even though during the last decades globalization seems to have resulted in the different cultures and societies moving closer together, and even though communication and cultural exchange has increased, many regional designs still retain distinctive characteristics.

Scandinavia

Not surprisingly, many of the designs from Scandinavia display mainly cold and muted colours. The works exhibit just the kind of aloofness you would expect from northern temper. Compared to the Latin-American designs for instance, they seem rather restrained, but always with an appealing elegance and simplicity. The works display clear and controlled outlines and shapes. Innovation and imagination appear well organized. Most of the designs showcase the sometimes chilly accuracy of the Scandinavian style. This is just another proof that design and art are always influenced by the environment in which they are created.

These particularities have been captured in this compilation of exceptional works from such diverse categories as poster design, advertising, and illustrations.

HR Giger first received acclaim in the 1960s with his airbrushed fantasy landscapes. However, he scored his breakthrough in applied art, and particularly in his high-profile movie work on Ridley Scott's Alien. In 1980, he received an Oscar for "Best Achievement for Visual Effects" for his designs of the film's title creature and its otherworldly environment.

His other celebrated film projects include Poltergeist II, Alien 3 and Species, for which he designed a deadly but beautiful half-extraterrestrial female creature and a fantastic nightmare train. Giger's album covers for Debbie Harry and Emerson, Lake and Palmer were voted as being among the top hundred in music history by music journalists, while furniture designed by Giger graces a bar in Chur, Switzerland.

This book was designed by the artist himself, and features detailed commentaries in which Giger describes his work from the early 1960s to the late 1990s; the authentic voice of the master.

During the last 10 years there has been a significant leap forward in the development of yacht interiors. A decisive factor here was the introduction of the computer in the production process, which has greatly shortened the design phase and allowed more freedom when simulating and visualizing models. As a result, new boat forms, as well as more aerodynamic sails, have emerged, which could be carefully designed and built. The creation of modern yacht interiors reflects current design trends. There is, for instance, a clear trend towards plain and minimalist interiors. Here the designer renounces unnecessary decorative elements and employs pale colours, like white, grey and beige, which make interiors seem larger. In addition to Asian décor elements, there are also very colourful interior designs, which are appealing for their playfulness, among other reasons. Modern yachts, then, do not take a back seat to living quarters on land when it comes to comfort and design, and it is not surprising that, besides famous yacht designers, creative personalities like Armani or Philipp Starck have discovered a love for designing yachts interiors.

The increasingly faster changing trends and attitudes about life are also logically reflected in the design. In the era of mass production, media giants and time where 'average' is expanding at an alarming rate, it is more important than ever to tackle new dimensions in design. Design does not stop at the product's wrapper, one cannot look at one's very own design work in isolation any longer, and integrated thinking is required. EU expansion is now fully underway, markets are becoming global and as a result, product and design requirements are becoming increasingly complex. On the way to a multi-cultural society, products are required that are understood beyond the cultural borders. But what identifies or characterizes young European design? The answers are several and varying, rather than just one. Some of the works that were subjectively selected here have been awarded the highest design awards, other are still in concept phase or are waiting for a manufacturer and marketing as prototypes. The book shows what is happening in the young European design scene. As one can see, things are moving!
