Patterns are everywhere – on paper or cloth, as wallpaper or as wrapping material. Patterns can be strictly abstract and geometrical or concrete, multicoloured or monochrome. Sometimes they serve as a background, sometimes as a coating.

They are usually composed of a recurrent motif – often floral or natural, sometimes abstract. They have in common that they're not meant to be seen as a picture with a focus, nor as the main thing that draws the attention. The purpose of a pattern is mostly to create a mood, a backdrop, a setting for the main thing.

Creating an ideal pattern requires a certain restraint and a good knowledge of colours. Historically, William Morris springs to the mind with his famous quasi-mediaeval designs for panels and textiles. More recently, the Finnish company Marimekko defined a style that is mostly associated with the sixties, though their influence is still visible today. You'll find traces of both in many of the designs collected in this book.

Regardless if they're stark and restrained, or flowery and colourful – “the Exciting World Of Pattern Design” features an abundance of patterns of all kinds and dimensions. They're all brand new, they're inspired and inspiring, they're original, decorative, funny, pretty, unusual, flashy or subdued, vintage or totally modern. We've collected new patterns in every conceivable form.

This time, the focus lies on patterns.

A graphic guide to ornaments in the twentieth century. It unveils the function of ornament as the agent for specific affects, dismantling the idea that ornament is applied to buildings as a discrete or non-essential entity. Each case exploits specific synergies between the exterior and the interior, constructing an internal order between ornament and material. These internal orders produce expressions that are contemporary, yet whose affects are resilient in time.

Initiated as a seminar at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Farshid Moussavi is a partner in leading London-based firm Foreign Office Architects.

This wonderful book presents a thorough survey of the art of stained glass from early times to the present day.

This is a guide to the most important, beautiful and unusual stained glass to be found around the world

It is an invaluable sourcebook, with a meticulous, step-by-step illustrated account of the process of the making of a stained glass window and a comprehensive analysis of the issues facing conservationists.

International stained glass expert Virginia Raguin traces the emergence of stained glass as a unique art form through an examination of its techniques and symbolism, and the political and historical contexts – both ecclesiastical and secular – in which it has been displayed.

The story spans over 1,000 years, from the dramatic, richly patterned figures in Strasbourg Cathedral, via the monumental programmes at Chartres, York, Cologne and Florence, to modern masterpieces by Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Henri Matisse and John Piper among others.

From Romanesque to Gothic Revival, Renaissance to Opalesque, Virginia Raguin reveals her profound knowledge of the naunces of style and the aesthetics of light in this compelling field.

"A woman once rang me up and said, 'Mr. Escher, I am absolutely crazy about your work. In your print Reptiles, you have given such a striking illustration of reincarnation.' I replied, ‘Madame, if that`s the way you see it, so be it.`" An engagingly sly comment by the renowned Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) - the complex ambiguities of whose work leave hasty or single-minded interpretations far behind. Long before the first computer-generated 3-D images were thrilling the public, Escher was a master of the third dimension. His lithograph "Magic Mirror" dates as far back as 1946. In taking that title for this book, mathematician Bruno Ernst is stressing the magic spell Escher`s work invariably casts on those who see it. Ernst visited Escher every week for a year, systematically talking through his entire œuvre with him. Their discussions resulted in a friendship that gave Ernst intimate access to the life and conceptual world of Escher. Ernst`s account was meticulously scrutinized and made accurate by the artist himself.

Escher`s work refuses to be pigeonholed. Scientific, psychological, or aesthetic criteria alone cannot do it justice. The questions remain. Why did he create the pictures? How did he construct them? What preliminary studies were necessary before he could arrive at the final version? And how are the various images Escher created interrelated? This book, complete with biographical data, 250 illustrations, and explications of mathematical problems, offers answers to these and many other questions and is an authentic source text of the first order.

This beautiful book draws on the rich collections of the Musée de la Toile de Jouy to produce the first-ever complete history of these textiles. The illustrations include original designs conserved in the museum, exceptional historical examples of clothing and furniture, documents relating to their manufacture and to the founding of the company, and examples of contemporary uses.

When printed and painted cottons from India first appeared in France in the 17th century, there was a reaction to their enormous commercial success and an embargo was placed on their import. In 1759 this ban was lifted, and the Manufacture Royale de Jouy was founded to produce printed cotton fabrics that could compete with the popular imported ones. Within a few years, the factory was the biggest of its kind in Europe and some 30,000 designs were created, many of them the work of renowned 18th-century artists such as Fragonard and Boucher.

The Toile de Jouy textile has become increasingly popular among designers and decorators, who incorporate its classic patterns in upholstery, wallpaper, linens and stationery. For anyone interested in the history of textiles or design, or looking for fresh ideas for interior decor, this book will be an inspiration and a fascinating reference.
