Many of these enchanting images are drawn from Christopher Dresser's Studies in Design, a landmark in home-decorating stylebooks. Each illustration is accompanied by an identifying caption that provides the scientific name and a brief description of the plant, its native region, and if it is a flower, the coloration of the blossoms.

Книга разделена на три части: буквицы рукописных и печатных изданий, фрагменты известного букваря Кариона Истомина и книжные заставки или цельные скомпонованные страницы с буквицами.
В колонтитулах указан период изданий. В случае книг XIX-XX вв. многие издательства использовали одинаковые буквицы и заставки, поэтому часто даны период и издательство, а не конкретная книга.
Орнамент Византии формировался как целостная система постепенно. В его основе лежала античная культура с ее сложившимся художественным языком. Аллегории, символы и образы, заимствованные у Древнего Востока, значительно обогатили художественный язык. В результате столь причудливого слияния западного и восточного наследия в византийском орнаменте сформировался круг мотивов и декоративных элементов, которые в новой интерпретации приобрели иной смысл и форму.
