This is a journey through Cartier’s history and its iconic jewelry.

This catalog is not a nostalgic journey through the past; rather, it seeks to highlight the way in which Cartier’s heritage serves as an inspiration to new generations of designers across the world, and how those repertoires take on a new spirit upon being reinvented by a new generation responsible for continuing, developing, renewing, and keeping alive the fashion house’s great legacy.

Five thematic units — The Early Days and the Birth of a Style, Universal Curiosity, Jeanne Toussaint’s Taste, Wearing Beauty and Measuring Time, and María Félix and Icons of Elegance — present close to 180 pieces from the Cartier Collection as well as institutional and private collections. In this way, the exhibition catalog allows us to understand the house’s history, and the development of its unique language and style, its savoir faire, and the evolution thereof.

Cartier epitomizes creativity and individuality in jewelry design. The 175 objects featured in this book exemplify Cartier’s inimitable talent and represent milestones in twentieth-century design.

These archetypes of excellence are important benchmarks in the history of world jewelry, and their relevance continues into the twenty-first century. The jeweled objects in this book are reproduced at actual size, and are accompanied by illustrations and detailed descriptions from Cartier’s vast archives in London, New York, and Paris. Six essays cover a broad range of topics from Cartier’s colorful history, including the influence of the Ballets Russes on Cartier’s forward-looking designs of 1910, the jeweler’s extraordinary technical and design prowess, and the important clients and collectors who wore Cartier’s most exquisite creations. This book features ingenious pieces that reveal how Cartier — by setting new aesthetic, ornamental, technical, and stylistic trends — is a pioneer in the field of jewelry design.

This catalog is an important reference for collectors, and includes previously unpublished photographs.

About the Authors:

Francois Chaille is passionate about art history, fashion, jewelry, and watchmaking. He has collaborated with Flammarion to publish over fifteen books on these subjects.

This refreshing new book, a lavishly produced and illustrated volume on the controversial 19th-century Romantic artist, addresses Caspar David Friedrich’s modern critics while deepening our appreciation for his singular genius.

"A painting must stand as a painting, made by human hand", wrote Caspar David Friedrich, "not seek to disguise itself as nature." One of his generation’s most popular painters, Friedrich imagined landscapes of powerful beauty and spirituality from within the confines of his studios. This breathtaking monograph, filled with glorious reproductions and details of his paintings, argues for Friedrich’s reputation as a sublime artist and interpreter of nature. In his thoughtful and wellresearched commentary, author Johannes Grave explores Friedrich’s unique approach to landscape painting as well as his revolutionary thoughts about how these paintings should be received by their viewers. Looking closely at pieces such as "Monk by the Sea", "The Abbey in the Oakwood", and the "Tetschen Altar", Graves shows how Friedrich developed an innovative approach to landscape painting, one that communicated a new sense of space and time, and which draws the viewer into a unique aesthetic experience.

Readable, insightful, and copiously illustrated in a deluxe volume, this compelling new perspective sheds crucial light on Friedrich’s celebrated body of work.

A revolutionary approach to spatial and visual values

Perhaps best known for his exceptional apples and pears, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was one of the founding fathers of modern art. Though he was underappreciated and highly criticized during his life, as time passed Cézanne's work came to be considered of inestimable importance. His method of experimentation with abstraction and perspective was an important precursor to modern painting, particularly cubism.

The author:
Hajo Düchting (b. 1949 in Düsseldorf) studied art history, philosophy and archaeology in Munich, where he gained his doctorate in 1981 with a thesis on Robert Delaunay’s Windows series. After working in museum and adult education, he moved on to teaching posts and guest professorships at the universities of Munich, Kassel, Leipzig, Saarbrücken and Mainz. Düchting has published numerous articles on the art of the modern era, colour theory and the teaching of art and has authored a number of TASCHEN titles, including Paul Cézanne (1988), Wassily Kandinsky (1990); Robert and Sonia Delaunay (1993) and Georges Seurat (1999).

Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) painted almost 200 portraits, including twenty-six of himself and twenty-nine of his wife. This book explores the portraiture of this remarkable artist, whom both Matisse and Picasso called ‘the father of
us all’, and accompanies a major international exhibition – the first devoted exclusively to this aspect of Cézanne’s work.

This book, like the exhibition it accompanies, looks at the special pictorial and thematic characteristics of Cézanne’s portraiture practice, including his creation of complementary pairs and multiple versions of the same subject. The chronological development of the artist’s portraiture is also explored, with an examination of the changes that occurred with respect to his style and method, on the one hand, and his understanding of resemblance and identity, on the other. The extent to which particular sitters inflected the characteristics and development of his practice is also considered.

Cézanne Portraits features works that mutually inform each other to reveal arguably the most personal, and therefore most human, aspect of his art, and one that has hitherto received surprisingly little attention. They range from Cézanne’s earliest surviving self-portraits, dating from the 1860s, through to his final portraits of Vallier, the gardener at his house near Aix-en-Provence, made shortly before the artist’s death in 1906.

Exhibition curator John Elderfield contributes an illuminating introductory essay on Cézanne’s portraiture, while the artist’s biographer, the late Alex Danchev, provides an informative dramatis personae on the sitters featured. The catalogue texts are by John Elderfield, Mary Morton and Xavier Rey, and a chronology by Jayne Warman sets the artist’s work in the context of his life.

Colorful dreams and tales

Chagall's world full of everyday miracles

The Belarusian painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is widely regarded as epitomizing the "painter as poet". The worldwide admiration he commanded remains unparalleled by any artist of the century.

Chagall’s paintings, steeped in mythology and mysticism, portray colorful dreams and tales that are deeply rooted in his Russian Jewish origins. The memories and yearning they evoke recall his native Vitebsk, and the great events that mark the life of ordinary people: birth, love, marriage and death. They tell of a world full of everyday miracles—in the room of lovers, on the streets of Vitebsk, beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Heaven and earth seem to meet in a topsy-turvy world in which whimsical figures of people and animals float through the air with gravity-defying serenity.
