These pendulum clocks not only tell time but also depict magnificent bronze and gilded sculptures which more or less relate to time, especially of Greek and Roman mythology, American Indian or African origin, and inhabitants of exotic countries. The author explains the underlying stories and scenes of everyday life in panels which represent the new, post-revolutionary era of the middle class in 19th century France.

Frequencies is the catalogue that accompanies a new exhibition project by the artist Eugènia Balcells on some perceptive aspects of energy: light and colour.

Frequencies is a book that wants to be faithful to the screens on which the images of the multimedia installations Colour wheel, Labyrinth, Marble and Frequencies are projected. It is a book that allows us to slowly study the flow of the colour spectrum that defines the geometry of everything that exists.

Frequencies is both a visual source of knowledge and a collection of reflections on the communicative capacity of art and sciences.

Soon after Giorgione introduced the fresco to Venice in the early 16th century, Venetian noble families began to commission the greatest masters of European painting to create grand fresco cycles for the interiors of their city palaces and their splendid villas on the mainland. This superbly photographed volume celebrates these frescoes, among the supreme achievements of Italian art and culture, providing an expertly guided tour of the beautiful residences in which they appear.

From complex allegories to Baroque masterpieces to fanciful distant worlds, Frescoes of the Veneto explores the changing nature of this tradition over the course of three centuries and features work by major artists such as Andrea Urbani and Giambattista Tiepolo, as well as lesser-known painters such as Giovanni Antonio Fasolo, Luca Ferrari da Reggio, and Jacopo Guarana. This splendid volume will be irresistible to lovers of Italian art and architecture and aficionados of the Veneto alike.

This chronological and topographic compilation presents the most famous single and cycles of frescos executed by Italian masters in various centuries using a technique that involves painting coloured pigments onto a layer of plaster not yet completely dry. As an art form, it is rooted in the mists of time, but it was rediscovered at the end of the Middle Ages and proved extremely popular throughout the modern period.

From the paintings adorning the walls of Romanesque churches to the great Baroque and Rococo cycles, the seven chapters of this volume, each with an introduction and additional, informative passages, help acquire a greater understanding and appreciation of this art form from the late Romanesque period through to the end of the 18th century.

Frida Kahlo - painter of pictures expressing the burdens that weighed upon her soul

The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most important 20th-century painters, and one of the few Latin American artists to have achieved a global reputation. In 1983 her work was declared the property of the Mexican state.

Kahlo was one of the daughters of an immigrant German photographer and a Mexican woman of Indian origin. Her life and work were more inextricably interwoven than in almost any other artist's case. Two events in her life were of crucial importance. When she was eighteen, a bus accident put her in hospital for a year with a smashed spinal column and fractured pelvis. It was in her sick bed that she first started to paint. Then, aged twenty-one, she married the world-famous Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera. She was to suffer the effects of the accident her whole life long, and was particularly pained by her inability to have children.

Kahlo's arresting pictures, most of them small format self-portraits, express the burdens that weighed upon her soul: her unbearable physical pain, the grief that Rivera's occasional affairs prompted, the sorrow her childlessness caused her, her homesickness when living abroad and her longing to feel that she had put down roots, profound loneliness. But they also declare her passionate love for her husband, her pronounced sensuousness, and her unwavering survival instinct.

Pain and passion. The original and intimate art of Mexico’s most famous female painter

The arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907–54) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art.

In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid surreal-real language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with her husband Diego Rivera. The artist described her paintings as “the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself.”

This book introduces a rich body of Kahlo’s work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.

They met in 1928, Frida Kahlo was then 21 years old and Diego Rivera was twice her age. He was already an international reference, she only aspired to become one.
An intense artistic creation, along with pain and suffering, was generated by this tormented union, in particular for Frida. Constantly in the shadow of her husband, bearing his unfaithfulness and her jealousy, Frida exorcised the pain on canvas, and won progressively the public’s interest. On both continents, America and Europe, these commited artists proclaimed their freedom and left behind them the traces of their exceptional talent.
In this book, Gerry Souter brings together both biographies and underlines with passion the link which existed between the two greatest mexican artists of the 20th century.

This companion volume to an ambitious retrospective holds a mirror up to the iconic artist whose work so strongly reflected her life.

The life and work of Frida Kahlo were inextricably intertwined. This beautiful monograph celebrates the artist while exploring the lesser-known aspects of her story. Reproductions of Kahlo's paintings are accompanied by a series of illuminating essays that explore the artist’s private writings and the intense public interest in her life, the role of physical and mental suffering in the creative process, and the coded and double meanings hidden in so much of Kahlo’s work. In addition, a photographic essay compiled by her grandniece, Cristina Kahlo, features images from the family’s private collection. As an icon of female strength and suffering, Frida Kahlo has become something of an art world myth. This scholarly yet profoundly moving illustrated tribute to her life and work offers a measured perspective that rises above the noise of celebrity to discover the true artist and the truth of her art.

Pain and Passion. The complete paintings of Frida Kahlo in an XXL edition

Among the few women artists who have transcended art history, none had a meteoric rise quite like Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). Her unmistakable face, depicted in over fifty extraordinary self-portraits, has been admired by generations; along with hundreds of photographs taken by notable artists such as Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray, and Martin Munkácsi, they made Frida Kahlo an iconic image of 20th-century art.

After an accident in her early youth, Frida became a painter of her own free will. Her marriage to Diego Rivera in 1929 placed her at the forefront of an artistic scene not only in the cultural Renaissance of Mexico, but also in the United States. Her work garnered praise from the poet André Breton, who added the Mexican painter to the ranks of international surrealism and exhibited her work in Paris in 1939 to the admiration of Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp.

We access the intimacy of Frida’s affections and passions through a selection of drawings, pages from her personal diary, letters, and an extensive illustrated biography featuring photos of Frida, Diego, and the Casa Azul, Frida’s home and the center of her universe.

This large-format XXL book allows readers to admire Frida Kahlo's paintings like never before, including unprecedented detail shots and famous photographs. It presents pieces in private collections and reproduces works that were previously lost or have not been exhibited for more than 80 years, forming the most extensive study of Kahlo's work and life to date.

This book traces the extraordinary life of an artist whose unforgettable imagery combined cruelty and wit, honesty and insolence, pain and empowerment.

Admired by the Surrealists and photographed by the greatest, Frida Kahlo was most renowned for her self-portraits and unusual still lifes. She learned about suffering at an early age. She contracted polio when she was six and was seriously maimed in a bus accident at the age of eighteen, which led to injuries that affected her for the rest of her life. She had a legendarily turbulent marriage to the great mural painter Diego Rivera, with whom she formed a strong attachment to indigenous Mexican folk art and a deep commitment to Communism.

The painful, exquisite art of Mexico’s favourite artist was a product of immense physical pain, and an emotional tumultuous life. The new book features the range and power of her heavily autobiographical work, from the early, disturbing explorations of personal suffering to the more dulled, painkiller-drenched paintings of her later life.
