The publication of the Said and Roswitha Marouf Collection focuses the viewer’s eye on the magnificent art works of the Meissen porcelain manufactory, which in 2010, on the occasion of its 300 anniversary, will celebrate the multifarious artistic wealth of the first European manufactory for porcelain. This book is not about the history of Meissen porcelain in the eighteenth century, which has been examined in numerous publications, but is rather a feast for the senses. The collection documented here provides a representative survey of the early creative period of the Meissen manufactory, especially in the area of painting, with outstanding works of art by Johann Gregorius Höroldt and his workshop.

Also the small sculptural work of Johann Joachim Kaendler and co-workers is presented in detail. The diversity of the porcelain items, chosen with care and collector’s passion, is reflected in the some 500 reproductions – including numerous large-format reproductions – of the nearly 200 art works. In the clear commentaries and in magnificent reproductions – including many details – the individual characteristics and distinctive features of these works are vividly presented.
Since 1994 the author, Dr. Ulrich Pietsch, has been director of the Porcelain Collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, the world’s largest collection of Meissen porcelain of the eighteenth century.

In 1889, Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) organized the independent L’Exposition de Peintures du Groupe Impressionniste et Synthésiste at Café Volpini with his followers on the occasion of the Paris World’s Fair. The French artist presented an extraordinary portfolio of prints in this framework for the first time: the so-called Suite Volpini, an ensemble of eleven lithographs printed on radiant yellow paper.

The publication examines the year 1889 as a defining moment in Gauguin’s development in which his autonomous, revolutionary new painting style and the central motifs of his work were unmistakably formed. It reconstructs the Volpini exhibition in the process, demonstrating the radicality of the works produced by Gauguin’s artistic circle. The Suite Volpini – for Gauguin a visual résumé that was intended to advertize his role as the founder of a new style – will be comprehensively described and seen in the context of the artist’s related paintings, woodcuts, ceramics, prints, and drawings.

Gauguin began his artistic life as an Impressionist in Paris, but yearning for a wider world view he experimented with decorative art and bright colours to create what some have termed Symbolism. He painted briefly with Van Gogh but was strongly drawn by the “otherness” of the South Pacific to which he travelled frequently, and finally settled far away from his origins and early influences to create a unique and intensely personal body of work. This beautiful new book revels in the scenes of Tahiti, the sunlit bodies, the shapes and styles of the South Pacific each of which have secured him a unique place in the history of art.

A comprehensive, illustrative monograph on the life and work of Paul Klee
All of the masterpieces in one volume

Paul Klee (1879–1940) is one of the most important representatives of modern art. His oeuvre is as universal as it is individual, standing tall among all of the currents and “isms” of his day. His overwhelming body of paintings, drawings, and other visual works; his letters, journal entries, and, last but not least, his teaching notes form the background for this pointed depiction of the life and work of the meditative artist and visual thinker.

Taken from the artist's most prolific years,1917-1933, this book presents works that Klee never intended to sell. More than 100 color plates reveal Klee's chromatic genius and wide stylistic range. Along with an indepth biography, the book features three essays, which examine Klee's versatility, place him in context with his contemporaries, and discuss his process for cataloging his works. The result is a unique and far-reaching exploration of one of the twentieth century's most important and admired artists, at the most fecund stage of his career.

For his most widely recognized work, the artist digitally alters old film footage or TV sports events to erase the main characters of the scenes, dissecting the role played by the mass media in the contemporary cult of celebrity. Biography:
Born in 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii (U.S.A.), Paul Pfeiffer spent most of his childhood in the Philippines, until he settled in New York in 1990. There, he studied at Hunter College, and later participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program. Since the beginning of his art career, Pfeiffer has won numerous awards, including the first Bucksbuam Award (2000) at the Whitney Biennial, and scholarships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and ArtPace. His work has been shown in numerous solo shows, including the MIT List Visual Arts Center of Cambridge, Massachusetts; the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago; Artangel of London; K21 of Dьsseldorf and the Kunst-Werke of Berlin. Pfeiffer was selected for the 49th Venice Biennale and most recently for the Sydney Biennial, 2008.

Known for always pushing the envelope when it comes to showing sex and violence on screen, Paul Verhoeven has directed controversial films in several genres, including the erotic thriller (Basic Instinct), melodrama (Showgirls) and science fiction (RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man). Many of the greatest artists since Dürer and Rembrandt have used the print medium to explore some of their most important ideas. Paula Rego is in this tradition, giving full rein to her imagination in both etching and lithography, and using the media with exuberance to create work that is as disturbing, erotic and powerful as her paintings.

Dave and Holly Combs travelled to New York City from Indianapolis, Indiana, to assist with Sept. 11 recovery efforts. While exploring Manhattan during their off hours, they were inspired by the wealth of stickers they saw all over the city. These stickers made such an impact that the Combses started PEEL, the first street-art magazine with a focus on stickers.
