While Impressionism marked the first steps toward modern painting by revolutionising an artistic medium stifled by academic conventions, Post-Impressionism, even more revolutionary, completely liberated colour and opened it to new, unknown horizons. Anchored in his epoch, relying on the new chromatic studies of Michel Eugène Chevreul, Georges Seurat transcribed the chemist’s theory of colours into tiny points that created an entire image. With his heavy strokes,Van Gogh illustrated the midday sun, while Cézanne renounced perspective. About the author:
Nathalia Brodskaïa is a curator at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. She has published monographs on Rousseau, Renoir, Derain, Vlaminck, and Van Dongen, as well as many books on the Fauves and Naïve Art. She is currently working on a study of French painters at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

Porcelain production in the Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) region of western Bohemia is featured here. American importers of the New York firm Larzarus Straus & Sons financed the creation of the Marx & Gutherz factory in 1884. It later became known as the Oscar & Edgar Gutherz Royal Austria factory. Over 1000 colour photographs and illustrations demonstrate the rich variety of porcelain items produced by the factory between 1898 and 1918.

The Gutherz factory exported factory-decorated ware and large amounts of undecorated porcelain, known as “whiteware” to satisfy interest in amateur porcelain painting in America. The methods used to decorate and market Royal Austria porcelain are explained and American hand-decorated pieces are presented, making the book an invaluable reference for those who purchase, sell, or have inherited this fine tableware.

The plate blanks are identified, categorized, and illustrated in over 100 patterns. Many shapes of dinnerware, cups and saucers, and hollowware handles are shown for the first time. A list of the numbered moulds used to create hundreds of shapes is unique.

John C. Benjamin served a four-year apprenticeship at Cameo Corner, the Bloomsbury antique jewellers specialising in rare and historic jewellery from Ancient Rome to the nineteenth-century. He was International Director of Jewellery for Philips Fine Art Auctioneers, before setting up on his own as an independent jewellery consultant in 1999. A lecturer, writer and broadcaster, he has lectured extensively to professional groups, universities and societies in Britain, Europe and America, and regularly appears on BBC Television's Antiques Roadshow. He is a fellow of the Gemmological Association and was admitted to the Goldsmith's Company in 2000.
