Think Art Deco and be transported to the Roaring '20s, a time of flappers, double-breasted, pin striped suits, speakeasies, decadence, and elegance. This era took place in the soft and romantic illumination of early electric lighting fixtures--which are showcased in this gorgeous new book. The beautiful and often fantastic Art Deco lighting in homes and public spaces alike are works of art. Over 590 luminous color photographs, show accent and figural radio lamps, boudoir lamps, table and desk lamps, overhead and wall lighting, and floor lighting produced by manufacturers such as Consolidated Glass, Lightolier, Lincoln, Moe Bridges, Williamson, Frankart, Nuart, and Chase. The book guides readers through various types of period lighting and provides a bibliography and value references in the captions for all the lighting displayed. It will be a valued addition to the libraries of interior decorators, restoration buffs, theater goers, and all who collect period lighting fixtures and enjoy beautiful works of art.

The Wiener Werkstätte or Vienna Workshops were founded in 1903 by architect Josef Hoffmann and artist Koloman Moser. Beginning in 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte began publishing a numbered series of postcards, which would ultimately exceed 1,000. There were numerous cards designed to celebrate holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, New Year’s, and others. When the fashion department was founded in 1910, costume and accessories became another popular subject depicted in the postcards, along with illustrations of places in Vienna and elsewhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Europe. All of the major designers who worked for the firm were contributors in this medium including Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and Dagobert Peche. Other noteworthy artists who were active in this area include Moriz Jung, Rudolf Kalvach, Mela Koehler, and Maria Likarz, among others. This publication is the first fully illustrated catalogue raisonné on Wiener Werkstätte postcards to appear in English.

Recently Japanese swords have gained enormous popularity as art objects with collectors and enthusiasts around the world, but until now much of the most detailed information on the subject has been available only in Japanese. This comprehensive guide to the appreciation and appraisal of the blades of Japanese swords provides, at last, all the background that readers need to become true connoisseurs.
The book is organized along historical lines for the sake of clarity and convenience, and its approach is always practical. Broad discussions of each tradition within the Gokaden focus on the features that distinguish specific schools and smiths - the various kinds of jihada, hamon, boshi, and hataraki favored in different periods and regions - making this an invaluable reference tool for all enthusiasts, especially those who wish to take part in kantei-kai, or sword appreciation meetings. Each section closes with an easy reference chart summarizing the distinctive features of the work of various schools and smiths.

The chapter on terminology gives advice on what to look for when examining the different parts of a blade, again making reference to the unique features of particularly significant smiths. The chapter on care and appraisal of blades tells precisely how to handle blades and what to expect at a sword appraisal meeting, including an explanation of all the various responses that a judge may give in response to a bid.

Richly illustrated throughout with more than 550 of the author's own painstaking oshigata illustrations - sword tracings onto which details are penciled in by hand - THE CONNOISSEUR’S BOOK OF JAPANESE SWORDS is easily the most informative and comprehensive guide to the blades of Japanese swords ever to appear in English.

Kokan Nagayama, who is widely recognized as one of the foremost living sword polishers, compiled the notes for this book over the course of many years spent teaching the arts of polishing and appraisal.

Nagayama-sensei is widely recognized as one of the foremost living sword polishers and is a veteran teacher of both polishing and appraisal. Here in one accessible volume he distills the store of knowledge he has gained over a lifetime of intensive research.

From the Back Cover:

"Nagayama-sensei and his senior pupils have for many years now taken an enlightened approach to study of Japanese swords outside of Japan. They have been of great assistance to collectors here in Great Britain and in other countries, traveling and living abroad, organizing exhibitions, teaching us and polishing our swords, always in an altruistic spirit. This translation is another example of this same approach. In the past we have often struggled on our own or in small groups to gain an understanding of this peculiarly Japanese cultural asset, and with many of the definitive books on the subject still untranslated, a wealth of information has in the past been inaccessible to the non-Japanese reader. THE CONNOISSEUR’S BOOK OF JAPANESE SWORDS will be of great help in making educated judgments at kantei sessions, and will be an invaluable and constant reference work." - From the Foreword by Clive Sinclaire, Chairman of the Token Society of Great Britain.

The British Museum’s collection of watches is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. With examples ranging from sixteenth-century early stack freed watches (the first with built-in mechanisms to prevent them from running faster as their mainsprings wound down) to decorative watches of the seventeenth century, from precision-made chronometers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to mass-produced watches of the modern era, the collection follows the complete history of the watch through an incredible 500 years.

Strikingly illustrated with 250 colour images, this authoritative compendium presents that history with a range and depth unequalled by any other book. All the major makers of Europe and America are represented in its pages, many with multiple examples. Here you will find gems from the London workshops of Thomas Tompion, whose reputation stretched far and wide even in his own time; samples from the craftsmanship of Swiss-born Abraham Louis Breguet, who supplied the finest and costliest watches to the crown heads and aristocratic families of the Western world; and many other exquisite masterworks. Saul Peckham’s photography captures every finely-wrought detail, from the ornamentation of faces to the precision and intricacy of gears. An essential volume for horologists, collectors, and aficionados alike, The History of Watches will take you on a fascinating journey through time as recorded by the world’s most illustrious timepieces.

The radiant and beloved masterworks of leaded glass from the Gilded Age. Louis C. Tiffany’s intricate and brilliantly colored masterpieces have captivated collectors for decades, and continue to inspire crafters who re-create them in home workshops today. This collection showcases eighty of the firm’s most iconic lamps, including rare and one-of-a-kind creations. These examples have all been newly photographed in sumptuous detail to reveal features in the glass and metalwork that have never been seen before in print. Intricate patterns dazzle with kaleidoscopic fantasies: wisteria that twists and curls with grace, peonies that explode with color, and dragonflies that dance with the light. Uniting a reverence for nature and a fascination with the artistic potential of glass, Louis C. Tiffany and his designers created a revolutionary design aesthetic that brought the beauty of the natural world into the home. This book explores Tiffany Studios’ innovative adaptation of electric light: sheathing the incandescent light bulb in a shimmering veil of leaded glass. Beautifully designed and produced in an intimate format, The Lamps of Tiffany Studios presents a jewel-box package that makes the perfect gift for any art lover.
