This book has been divided into three chapters: one covers facade finish materials, another on the idea of “double skins” and a third on interventions in a historic context. The first speaks of brick, plaster or stone; some of the materials we have used as finish material on our projects according to the context they were found. In the second case, the composition strategy is another: now we are not dealing with opening up a void in the wall. Here we add one layer atop an existing one. The third chapter is reference for all those who have had to work in a city as consolidated as Barcelona, consolidated in the fact that for every brand-new building raised in the city, there are 5 interior renovations or restorations, mostly caused by changes of use.

The design revolutions of the early 20th century were woven into the very fabric of the carpets and rugs of that era. Carpets of the Art Deco Era, previously published as 'Art Deco and Modernist Carpets' and now reissued in PLC, is the most in-depth history on the subject.

It charts the evolution of carpet design out of the floral effusions of the Victorian salons and into the angular elegance of Art Deco and bold abstraction of Modernism popularized by the machine age. Such artists and designers as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Matisse, Klee, and many more advanced the designs going on underfoot, making these rugs extremely collectible artworks in their own right.

Susan Day was Chief Librarian at the Institut Français d’Architecture for 23 years, and has acted as Scientific Advisor for the Louvre and Les Arts Décoratifs Museum.

The story of the French cashmere shawls of the 19th century and their rise to the heights of fashion. This treasure-trove will not only delight textile scholars and costume historians but is sure to appeal to anyone who loves gorgeous accessories

The delicate beauty of the cashmere shawl was first brought to Europe by the East India Companies and Napoleon’s campaigns. Woven in Kashmir, its fabric was so light that, according to legend, a whole shawl could be passed through a finger-ring. By the 19th century, these shawls were highly sought-after in France; French manufacturers soon saw that there was a market for more accessibly priced versions and started to create their own.

Monique Lévi-Strauss has spent more than thirty years collecting and studying these shawls and gathering rare documents to preserve their history. This completely revised, expanded and redesigned edition of her classic book on the subject illustrates nearly 300 of these beautiful items, superbly photographed to showcase their splendid original designs, alongside a wealth of archive material and contemporary paintings that show them being worn by their elegant owners.

This memo-game is based on a very special concept: the colors follow the format used in Johannes Itten’s color theory: red for a square, blue for a circle, yellow for a triangle, orange for a trapezium, green for a spherical triangle, and purple for an ellipse. The colors are shown with the corresponding form, which increases their specific impression.

Furthermore, each color is present in six different nuances; this increases the perception of the color tones and supports the creative process of finding new names to specify the individual forms. As the cards are turned over new color contrasts are revealed; these can also be used to intensify knowledge of color theory. Thus, these cards must not just be used for playing the memo-game, they can also be used for inspiration and for experimenting with different color combinations, series and tones.

As far back as the earliest Greek temples, color has been an integral part of architecture but also one of its least understood elements.

Color theory is rarely taught in architecture schools, leaving architects to puzzle out the hows and whys of which colors to select and how they interact, complement, or clash. Color for Architects is profusely illustrated and provides a clear, concise primer on color for designers of every kind.

This latest volume in our Architecture Briefs series combines the theoretical and practical, providing the basics on which to build a fuller mastery of this essential component of design. A wealth of built examples, exercises, and activities allows students to apply their learning of color to real-world situations.

Protecting human beings has always been one of the most genuine purposes of architecture. Due to the increase in global warming in recent years, protection from the sun is becoming one of its most important functions. This challenge has resulted in numerous trendsetting technological innovations and amazing design concepts, which have been collected in this book. Shade is mainly created in three ways: while opaque constructions block off all light, perforated devices as well as translucent materials reduce the exposure to light.

Creating Shade presents all conceivable types and forms of shade-providing design made of a host of different materials such as wood, fabrics, concrete, and a great number of synthetic materials. The collection includes elegant pergolas, extravagant pavilions, and roofed piazzas, as well as a fascinating solution for a canopy over a Roman excavation site and the spectacular Metropol Parasol in Seville. Outstanding serial products are presented along with individually constructed creations.

This fascinating sourcebook presents the most remarkable, beautiful, and innovative building façades in contemporary architecture.

A building’s façade sets the aesthetic tone for its entire design while serving a variety of functions, from regulating light and protecting against the elements to providing insulation for temperature and sound. This absorbing book details hundreds of examples of interesting and progressive façades from around the world. Presented in colourful double-page spreads, each façade is photographed from different angles and includes engaging texts that describe their significance. Readers can learn how traditional mashrabiyas in Abu Dhabi are being engineered to respond to light and to regulate heat, how a hospital in Mexico City has been constructed with “smog-eating” tiles, and how a “bio-adaptive” façade in Germany uses algae to generate energy and provide shade. Informative and accessible, this compendium is a highly useful resource for architects, engineers, and designers.

A unique exploration of the close relationship between art and design, explored through the historic and contemporary fabric designs of Liberty, where avant-garde art has influenced the colourful, geometric collections for more than half a century

Liberty is renowned internationally for its fabrics, especially its floral patterns, but it also has a long history of developing bold, geometric designs. Many of these have been inspired by early 20th-century avant-garde art, notably by the Italian Futurists – by artists such as Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni – and their English contemporaries the Vorticists, including Christopher Nevinson and Edward Wadsworth.

In anticipation of Liberty’s 150th anniversary, esteemed couturier and interior designer Federico Forquet has curated a striking new range of fabrics – the FuturLiberty Collection – that carries Liberty’s creative heritage into our own age.

The Futurist and Vorticist art that lies behind the new designs is explored by specialists Ester Coen and Richard Cork, while archivist Anna Buruma examines Liberty’s rich history of avant-garde designs. By illuminating the process by which the FuturLiberty Collection came into being, this highly visual study also reveals how art can inform design, making it contemporary, relevant and engaging.

About the Author:

Ester Coen is an expert on Italian Futurism and the international avant-garde. She has been Associate Professor at the University of Florence and Professor at the universities of Udine and L’Aquila. Richard Cork is an art historian, critic, curator and broadcaster. He has been an art critic for the Evening StandardThe ListenerThe Times and the New Statesman, and is a past Turner Prize judge.

An exuberant celebration of the color green — in nature, art, interiors, and design.

Green is like water: it is everywhere, and we can’t live without it. Green is the color of nature and the environment. Green is life. Interior designer and style guru Carlos Mota has such a passion for green that he has now devoted an entire book to it. G: Forever Green celebrates the color in all its manifold manifestations: in nature, food, fashion, jewelry, art, interiors, and architecture.

From the brilliant markings on a butterfly’s wings to the feathers of a tropical bird’s breast, from Magritte’s oversized apple to the brocade drapery in the background of a Holbein portrait, from a leafy arbor to a leafy wallpaper, from celadon to forest to emerald to acid to lime to Kelly, the variety is astounding. Illustrated with Mota’s own photographs, taken as he has traveled the world, as well as images by prominent photographers, G: Forever Green features rooms by notable designers, among them Kelly Wearstler, Alessandra Branca, Mark D. Sikes, Robert Couturier, Gert Voorjans, and Nicky Haslam.

This stunning volume, superbly produced with a green metallic edge stain, is a testament to the power of green to soothe, inspire, and excite.
