Wim Pauwels, founder and managing director of Beta-Plus Publishing, began putting out a series of books in 1997 about architecture and interior design.

So far the company has published more than 250 titles dedicated to certain themes (such as living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, children's rooms, antique building materials, restoration, renovation, gardens and swimming pools), plus monographs of architects and interior designers, manuals and yearbooks about timeless and contemporary architecture and interiors. For each book, he enlists the assistance of authoritative specialists for the introductory texts and photograph captions.

About the Authors:

Manhattan-based Alex Papachristidis Interiors was founded by Alex Papachristidis in 1987. An Elle Decor A-list designer, the firm’s projects are profiled in publications such as Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Architectural Digest. Alex Papachristidis Interiors has a carpet line with Beauvais Carpets. A founding editor of the New York Times Styles section, journalist Dan Shaw has cowritten several books, including Mary McDonald: Interiors. Affectionately known as the Prince of Chintz, Mario Buatta is one of America’s foremost decorators. Photographer Tria Giovan is a contributor to House Beautiful and Veranda.

So, why is it so often overlooked when an architect designs a building? The "Archisutra" raises the question: How should we design for sex? In 1490 Leonardo da The "Archisutra" is a design manual giving data for a selection of sex positions, using annotated scale drawings and informative descriptions.

Vinci sketched the Vitruvian Man, a diagram showing the proportions of man based on the writings of Vitruvius in 400AD. The sketch of the Vitruvian Man depicts the perfect male form as seen by Vitruvius. Vitruvius aimed to discover the mathematical proportions of the human body and use the findings to improve the function and appearance of architecture. In more modern times, the architect Le Corbusier devised an anthropometric scale of proportions, a further development from Vitruvius' work. He called his system The Modulor.

The Modulor was a standard model of the human form used by Le Corbusier to determine the correct amount of living space needed for residents in his buildings. The "Archisutra" follows on from the work of Vitruvius, da Vinci and Le Corbusier and pushes the idea that buildings should be designed around human life.

The greatest challenge in designing homes is negotiating the delicate balance between aesthetics and the personal desires of the occupants.

While it’s important for the structure to reflect the vision and style of the architect, the client must ultimately feel at home beneath the roof.
