In the Austria of the wild 1960s, the visionary designs of architects and artists garnered international attention.

Described as the "Austrian phenomenon," these projects and installations contained the concentrated creativity of the Austrian architectural neo-avant-garde between 1956 and 1973.

In Vienna, these avant-garde dreams came to be symbolized by Hans Hollein’s Retti Candle Shop and Hermann Czech’s many cafés and bars, which are still successful today, including the Kleines Café (Little Café), Wunderbar, and Salzamt.

The best-known protagonists of this scene include Hans Hollein, Walter Pichler, Raimund Abraham, Coop Himmelblau, Haus-Rucker-Co, Missing Link, and others.

The book is fully illustrated in color and consists of two parts.

The first contains "Documentation" of important publications from the years 1958–1973 in international trade journals like Archigram, Domus, Architectural Record, and Casabella, in which the young architects sought attention for their programs.

The second is "Reconstruction," a cross-section of images and texts from publications on the "Austrian phenomenon," elucidated and situated in the context of international architectural history by authors such as Friedrich Achleitner, Bart Lootsma, Stanislaus von Moos, Joseph Rykwert, Anthony Vidler, and others.

Over a million houses were built in Britain during the Edwardian period and another four million in the years between the two World Wars; most of these are still in use as homes today. The Camondos were a family of bankers and philanthropists – ‘the Rothschilds of the East’. Arriving in Paris from Istanbul in 1869, their presence was soon noted in the worlds of business, music, art and the wealthier echelons of Paris society.

One man, Moïse de Camondo, made their mark permanent with the legacy of the Musée Nissim de Camondo, a magnificent Belle Époque mansion built to contain the family’s collection of 18th-century French art, and which became a memorial to his son who did not live to inherit it: Nissim de Camondo, a pilot during the First World War, was killed in aerial combat in 1917.

With Moïse’s death in 1935, and the deaths of remaining members of the family at Auschwitz in 1943–44, the Camondo line came to an end. The house was bequeathed to the French state, and survived the war intact.

About the Author:

On completing his National Service in Egypt, Richard Parsons spent some time with the Colonial Service, before joining a mining finance house and working for several years in West Africa. He was then posted to Tehran where he fell in love with Oriental carpets. On completion of his assignment in Iran and faced with the prospect of a London office, he abandoned his career for the carpet trade to the consternation of family and friends. He subsequently joined the prestigious firm of Oriental Carpet Wholesalers in the UK, whose agents buy from all over the carpet-making world for sale in the UK and redistribution throughout the world. After training at the London warehouse and in Iran, he was sent to Afghanistan as assistant buyer. He soon took over full responsibilities staying on in Afghanistan until 1979 when it was occupied by the Soviet Union. He then went as a buyer to Pakistan where he lived and worked until 1981, before moving to Hong Kong. His knowledge and love of Afghan rugs has prompted him to devote a great deal of time researching, writing and recording for posterity the details of rug production and tribal history in that remote but beautiful country. Richard Parsons died in February, 2002.
