THE WISH LIST

This 1774 guidebook for English carpenters was one of the earliest "do-it-yourself" manuals ever published. The builders' manuals and pattern books of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries offered carpenters and other construction workers important resources for designs and techniques. Those unable to afford an architect's services could feel confident in the good taste of their residence by selecting designs from a pattern book. Employing elementary arithmetic and geometry, the guide's annotated and meticulously rendered engravings depict cross-sections of chimney-pieces, ceilings, cornices, and other architectural details.

William Pain's manual was one of the earliest such works published in the United States. Printed in Philadelphia in 1797, it helped standardize key aspects of Federal architecture and served as a model for construction at George Washington's Mount Vernon home. Reprinted from an original 1774 edition, this is the only available version of a splendid reference for architectural historians and those with an interest in classical architecture.

During the past three decades, Portuguese architect Eduardo Souta de Moura has produced a body of work that is of our time but also carries echoes of architectural traditions. The Provencal House will look at what is, for many, one of the region's main attractions - its stunning architecture. An indelible part of the landscape, provencal houses are constructed with traditional methods in local stone, whether old or new, and often around gardens, courtyards or pools. With chapters dedicated to the Town House, the Country House and the Manor House, this stunning book is a visual exploration of Provencal architecture and interior design. The Provencal House will document the setting and individual character of the featured homes, which range from the contemporary to the classic. A traditional exterior may often hide a surprising interior but they all possess an elusive quality which renders them quintessentially Provencal.

The Regency Country House is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of the key English country houses of 1800 to 1830. It is written by John Martin Robinson, leading architectural historian, herald, and librarian to the Duke of Norfolk, who is author of numerous books including Buckingham Palace the official illustrated history.

This new book is divided into three parts: it looks at the princely palaces and houses associated with the Prince Regent, from Brighton Pavilion to Buckingham Palace, the nobleman's houses such as Tregothnan, Eastnor Castle and Goodwood and gentleman's houses such as Southill, Bedfordshire and Sheringham, Norfolk.

The book will illustrate work by leading country houses architects including the Wyatt dynasty, Henry Holland, John Nash, Thomas Hopper, Humphry Repton and Sir John Soane - as well as regional designers such such as Dobson of Newcastle and Webster of Kendal.

As critics recognised on publication of the original hardback edition, it is the first book to provide a comprehensive survey of the key English country houses of 1800 to 1830. The duotone and colour illustrations, the work of some of Britain’s leading architectural photographers, show work by leading country houses architects including the Wyatt dynasty, Henry Holland, John Nash, Thomas Hopper, Humphry Repton and Sir John Soane—as well as regional designers such as Dobson of Newcastle and Webster of Kendal. John Martin Robinson will also be looking critically at important architectural themes of the Regency, from the development of the Graeco-Roman style associated originally with the Wyatts, the Gothic Revival, the Picturseque and cottage ornee and the role of Thomas Hope. Mid-20th century Country Life authors such as Christopher Hussey and Margaret Jourdain played a significant role in rediscovering and popularising the Regency period, a time when the English country house took on many of the qualities and attributes that we still take for granted today, and make Regency country houses as enjoyable to live in as when they were first built.

Beginning in the "heroic" period of the 1920s, Le Corbusier presented his work to the world in his lectures: in Paris and Rome, Geneva and Zurich, Barcelona and Brussels, Prague and Moscow, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, as well as at Columbia University in New York.

In this volume, the numerous excerpts, preliminary notes, accompanying drawings, and photographs that Le Corbusier produced in connection with his lectures are presented and contextualized by one of the leading experts on the great architect. In them, we see modernism at work. Always a great rhetorician and a master at staging his own persona, Le Corbusier takes the arguments and strategies, seminal ideas and most convincing highlights and fuses them into an architectural conception that every advanced architectural position and practice must still come to terms with today.

After presenting the lectures in detail in a series of thematic chapters, the final third of the book reproduces five pivotal lectures from the 1920s and 1950s.

In this book, works of famous designers around the world are collected, and classified according to design highlights such as new concept, new idea, new design approach, new technology and new materials, finally form four categories: Bionic Architecture, Green Architecture, High-tech Architecture, and Creative Architecture.
