Ce livre montre comment les artisans ont utilisé les marbres anciens dans le mobilier : dessus de commodes, plateaux de tables et de consoles, cheminées en marbre. Outre le marbre dans le meuble, son utilisation dans la décoration, l’architecture, la mosaïque, les objets d’art, les statues et l’art religieux  est largement abordée.
Une partie technique traite des connaissances nécessaires à l’expertise d’un marbre ancien, son identification et son entretien, et montre un exemple de restauration d’un plateau de marbre. Les autres roches décoratives sont également décrites : les bois pétrifiés, le porphyre, l’albâtre ou la paesine, cette étonnante pierre-paysage.
Une deuxième partie montre, à travers de nombreuses photographies, des exemples d’utilisation des marbres dans des œuvres prestigieuses depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours, en insistant sur le XVIIIe siècle. Beaucoup ont été photographiées au Musée Carnavalet, au Château de Versailles, à Palais Garnier et au Musée Nissim de Camondo.
