‘Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!’ declared the architect Walter Gropius in his Bauhaus manifesto. Founded as an art school in 1919 and forced to close in 1933 by the Nazis, the Bauhaus established itself as a major influence on 20th-century art and design that continues to this day. Students were taught by some of the most celebrated artists of the time, including Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Wassily Kandinsky. The school moved from Weimar to Dessau in 1922, under its radical new director Hannes Meyer, and to Berlin in 1932 under architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1933 the Gestapo forced the Bauhaus to close for the last time.

This volume uncovers the sources of inspiration that brought the Bauhaus into existence, from medieval cathedrals of Europe and Hokusai prints to William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. Olivier Gabet is Director of the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris.
Anne Monier, a graduate of the Sorbonne and the École Normale Supérieure, is a curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Her research focus is the Bauhaus in general and Herbert Bayer in particular.
Raphaèle Billé is an assistant curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Her university research was on the topic of French metal furniture from 1925 to 1937.
Monique Blanc is a senior curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and head of the Middle Ages/Renaissance department.
Marie-Sophie Carron de la Carrière is a senior curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and head of the fashion collections from 1800 to 1945.
Louise Curtis is an assistant curator at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. She is also a PhD candidate in History of Photography at the Université de Lausanne in Switzerland.
Olivier Gabet is Director of the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris.
Nicholas Fox Weber is executive director of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
Jean-Louis Gaillemin, founder of Beaux-Arts magazine and L’Objet d’art, is an honorary lecturer at the Université Paris-Sorbonne, specializing in architecture and decor.

The Stained-Glass Windows of St. Andrew’s Dune Churchis a visual exploration of a treasure in the Hamptons: the extraordinary windows of a summer resort church span nearly 150 years of stained glass in America.

She lives in New York City. Tria Giovan specializes in interiors, still life, food, and portrait photography. Her books include Vendome’s Summer to Summer: Houses by the SeaOut East: Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons, and Island Hopping: Amanda Lindroth Design. Giovan lives in Sag Harbor and New York City. Joseph Coscia Jr. is head photographer at the Frick Collection and formerly chief photographer at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Russian imperial residence of Tsarskoye Selo – the ‘Tsar’s Village’ – is now more than three hundred years old. It was once a modest estate housing a summer residence for Catherine I, second wife of Peter the Great. The building now known as the Catherine Palace was extensively rebuilt by Empress Elizabeth and then lavishly refurbished by Catherine II, known as Catherine the Great.

The estate now is not only a piece of art history but a living testimony to the tastes and private passions of the Romanov family. Their clothes and porcelain, their desks and bookshelves build an intimate and involving portrait of life in imperial Russia.

This empress’s love of art and decoration is evident in the sumptuous interiors and in the extensive park, filled with fanciful pavilions, bridges and monuments. Catherine also commissioned the neoclassical Alexander Palace for her favourite grandson, the future Alexander I; this later became home to the last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family until their exile to Siberia.

Occupied by the Nazi forces in 1941, Tsarskoye Selo saw its treasures plundered and many of its interiors left derelict. Fortunately, some of its magnificent interiors survived, while others, such as the extravagant Amber Room, have since been painstakingly restored to their former opulence.

The palaces and pavilions are a glorious showcase for Russian art and craftsmanship in a huge variety of materials and techniques, from the mirrors and lavish gilding of the Great Hall to the blood-red beauty of the Agate Rooms, their walls lined with Siberian jasper.

Specially commissioned photographs by Marc Walter are accompanied by fascinating archive images, capturing a bygone age of baroque splendour that will captivate art lovers and historians alike.
