This broad survey of modernism — the most scintillating creative era in Paris — spans all domains: architecture, art, design, entertainment, fashion, film, literature, and photography.

The lives and works of artists in every creative discipline transformed Paris into a crucible of modernity in the first half of the twentieth century. Profiles of eighty-eight influential artists, designers, photographers, architects, writers, and personalities — including Gabrielle Chanel, Eileen Gray, Jean Prouvé, Pablo Picasso, Tamara de Lempicka, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Brassai, Man Ray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Walter Benjamin, Josephine Baker, Jean Renoir, Gertrude Stein, and more — highlight the boundless creative energy and optimism that permeated the City of Light at this key historical juncture.

Richly illustrated alphabetical entries with cross-references to related topics are complemented by six thematic essays on cinema, fashion, graphic design, habitation, painting, and urban planning. A portfolio of original contemporary photographs — from the historic center to the suburbs of Paris — reveals traces of modernism in dozens of buildings and their interiors that are rarely open to the public.

This catalogue — published to accompany an exhibition at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai in the summer of 2023 — sketches a panorama of human invention across the vast creative landscape of Paris from 1914 to 1945.

Видавництво: teNeues

Home Inspiration by teNeues goes into the next round – and has never been more relevant. After all, when the world around us is in shambles, a home with a feel-good vibe is essential. For some, a pared-down aesthetic that exudes a pleasant homeliness may be the right path to well-deserved ease; for others, a cheerful riot of colour is a fitting counterpart to the monochromatic daily grind. Two very different approaches that nevertheless pursue the same goal: to conjure up a real retreat from a simple living space.

Whether Hygge or Lagom, the Scandinavians manage the balancing act between inviting cosiness and inspiring modernity without precedent. Almost puristic in appearance, a combination of natural materials such as wood, pampas grass or ceramics and clean lines create an unobtrusive understatement. This turns a world of furnishings into an attitude to life that promises more balance in all situations – and this is what people outside Scandinavia are striving for.

In the usual teNeues quality with a high-quality layout, large-format images and exciting content, the new illustrated books in the freshly launched series now skilfully set the scene for two further interior trends, elegantly acting as decorative eye-catching pieces themselves. A practical index, which offers support in the search for brands and manufacturers, as well as fascinating rooms for re-styling make the books true inspirational treasures for every interior enthusiast.

- The latest interior design trends in the accustomed teNeues quality
- With a foreword by renowned expert Claire Bingham and furnishing recommendations from well-known interior designers
- Beautifully designed book spine, with a continuous pattern across the whole series, to bring added style to your bookshelf
- The third publication in the new Home Inspiration series by teNeues

The definitive story of the most ambitious and glamorous midcentury modern house in the United States — Sunnylands, the estate of Walter and Lenore Annenberg, in Rancho Mirage, California — now revised and expanded

In Palm Springs, the mecca of midcentury modern architecture, Sunnylands is the undisputed masterpiece. With its celadon green and yellow interior and giddy pink roof, it was a Downton Abbey for the Space Age.

There is no other house like it anywhere. Designed by one of California’s most important architects, A. Quincy Jones, it possesses the only completely preserved interior by Hollywood’s decorator-to-the-stars, William Haines. Completed in 1966, Sunnylands was built by ambassadors Walter and Leonore Annenberg, and became a seat of power where presidents, movie stars, and corporate leaders met, relaxed, and ran the world — with nobody watching.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of Sunnylands to the public, this revised edition adds 32 pages of brand new photography, including: the contemporary visitor center designed by Frederick Fisher & Partners; the mature 15 acres of contemplative gardens by James Burnett; a new LEED Platinum building by o2 Architecture with 17 acres of breathtaking net-zero plantings by CMG Landscape, not open to the public and only accessible within the pages of this book; and public programs and art installations including two for the world-renowned Desert X festival. Lavishly illustrated, this book is a must-have for fans of midcentury design.

About the Authors:

Janice Lyle was the director of the Sunnylands Center & Gardens from 2008 to 2022. Her knowledge of the history of the house and access to the Sunnylands archives is unparalleled. Former executive director of the Palm Springs Art Museum, Lyle has lectured extensively on modern architecture and lived in one of the most famous Palm Springs midcentury houses, Frey II.

Interior designer Michael S. Smith, who was responsible for the 2010 makeover of the Oval Office, designed the interiors of the Sunnylands Center, referencing the aesthetic of the historic house. He lives in Santa Monica and Rancho Mirage.

Interiors photographer Mark Davidson has shot assignments for the Smithsonian, Getty Museum, and Hammer Museum. He lives in Seattle.

Alastair Duncan

Видавництво: ACC Art Books

This grand opus assembles the people and the pieces at the heart of the Art Deco movement at each stage of its enduring appeal. The Art Deco Style is richly illustrated with the work of legendary designers and decorators Eileen Gray, Paul Iribe, Antoine Bourdelle, Armand-Albert Rateau and Jean Dunand, among others.

Ever since its early 20th-century origins, Art Deco has fascinated and amused socialites, collectors and designers. Referred to at the time as moderne, the style largely took shape around a clientele of French fashion industry luminaries and wealthy international collectors. Art historians christened it during a second wave in the ’60s, while a third generation of afficionados entered the auction houses of the ’80s and ’90s, ready to invest in the most exquisite examples. Curated by art consultant and author Alastair Duncan, this detailed historical account is the gold-standard visual guide to the decorative arts.

• Richly illustrated history of Art Deco
• Written by art consultant Alastair Duncan
• Designs by Eileen Gray, Jean Dunand and Antoine Bourdelle, among many others
• Featuring legendary Art Deco collectors such as Jacques Doucet, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld
• Perfect for antiques collectors, as well as fans of art, art history and design

About the Author:

Alastair Duncan is an international consultant on 19th and 20th century decorative arts and was, for ten years, a specialist and consultant on the subject for Christie's New York. He is the author of Louis C. Tiffany - The Garden Museum Collection and the Paris Salons series, also published by ACC. He has written 36 other books on the decorative arts, as well as articles for magazines including Vogue, Connoisseur, The Magazine Antiques and House & Garden.

John Summerson, Alan Powers
ID: 17059
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

A revised and updated edition of Sir John Summerson's classic book.

Derived from the principles of Greek and Roman architecture in antiquity, the classical style has long dominated the history of western architecture from the Renaissance to the present. Sir John Summerson’s timeless text, as relevant today as it was when first published, distils the visual language of architecture into its core classical elements, and illustrates that building throughout the ages express an awareness of the ‘grammar’ of style and its rules even if they vary, break or poetically contradict them. From the original edifices of Greece and Rome to the recapitulations and innovations of the Renaissance; the explosive rhetoric of the Baroque to the grave statements of Neo-classicism; and finally, the exuberant eclecticism of the Victorians and Edwardians to the 'stripped Neo-classicism' of some of the moderns; Summerson explains how every period has employed classical language to make their statement.

With a new introduction by academic and architectural historian Alan Powers, this introduction continues to be one of the defining texts on the subject and is essential reading for all students of architecture.

About the Author:

Sir John Newenham Summerson, CBE was one of the leading British architectural historians of the 20th century. He wrote mainly about British architecture, especially that of the Georgian Era. He was a Commissioner of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, curator of Sir John Soane's Museum, London, and Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford.

The world’s best buildings created from 1950 to the present, dissected and analysed through specially commissioned freehand drawings

This ambitious publication, now revised and expanded, dissects fifty-five modern masterpieces through specially commissioned freehand drawings that reveal the principles and details of what makes a building meaningful and enduring. Covering six continents, and ranging from a 1955 residence in India to a 2015 opera house in China, influential buildings of the past seven decades are analysed through detailed consideration of their key characteristics – site and surroundings, space and massing, programme and circulation, fenestration and use of natural light – to give an insight into how each design works as a cohesive whole. Appealing to architects, students and everyone who appreciates great buildings, The Elements of Modern Architecture is an essential reference and inspiration for generations to come.

Nikolaus Pevsner, Kenneth Frampton
ID: 17609
Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

An updated edition of this classic title on the origins of 20th-century ideas in architecture and the applied arts.

The turn of the nineteenth century saw an extraordinary flowering of invention in architecture and design, leading to the emergence of two contrasting styles: Art Nouveau and the International Style. Professor Nikolaus Pevsner brings clarity to this period of dynamic change by tracing the origins of twentieth-century ideas in architecture and the applied arts.

Featuring a new foreword by the distinguished architectural historian Kenneth Frampton, this classic title has now been updated with colour illustrations throughout.

About the Author:

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983) was Slade Professor of Fine Art, University of Cambridge, 1949-55, and Fellow of St John's College, 1950-55. He was the first Professor of the History of Art Department at Birkbeck College, University of London, retiring in 1969. He is probably best known for The Buildings of England, completed in more than fifty volumes shortly before his death, and for his Outline of European Architecture, which has remained a standard work for over forty years. Kenneth Frampton CBE served as Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York, from 1972 to 2019. In 2018 he was awarded the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. His publications include Studies in Tectonic Culture, Labour, Work and Architecture, American Masterworks, Kengo Kuma: Complete Works and A Genealogy of Modern Architecture.

Видавництво: Rockport

Universal Principles of Architecture is a concise, visual introduction to 100 of the most fundamental elements of architecture.

Take an expansive and provocative tour of architectural theory and practice, exploring everything from basic concepts to speculative design and subversive interventions.

Universal Principles of Architecture illustrates in 100 concepts the importance, possibilities, challenges, and roles that architecture plays in shaping the world. This radical and perhaps surprising survey is divided into five sections:Archetypes, Methods, Conditions, Relationships, and Imaginaries. And, each of the five sections in the book introduces in 20 principles architecture at different scales and stages of the design process.

Through an inclusive and holistic approach, the book refers to initial design ideas, creative design approaches, reflections on the effects of the built and destroyed environments, and architectural desires and aspirations to transform the world and engage with the cosmos.

Because architecture is the converging point where many fields of knowledge, ideas, forms, approaches, methods, sensibilities, and materials meet, the book provides a flexible and dynamic space where the material, conceptual, and social take shape.

Written, illustrated, and designed by critically acclaimed architects, educators, and authors Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski of WAI Architecture Think Tank, Universal Principles of Architecture combines accessible writing with otherworldly images like the ones they have displayed in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou Metz, Museum of Modern Art New York, Neues Museum Nuremberg, and Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology Lisbon.

The principles include:
- Figurative Archetypes
- Parasitic Architecture
- Diagramming
- Modelling
- Three-Dimensional Printing
- Carbon Neutral
- Biomimicry
- Inclusive Design
- Participatory Design
- AI Cities
- Queer Cartographies
- Intergalactic Architecture

Intended as an intergenerational and transdisciplinary reference volume, the book presents an ambitious overview of what architecture has been and can be in a world full of urgent challenges and abundant opportunities for social and ecological responsibility, and design creativity.

This book will challenge your preconceived notions of what architecture is and how it can be used.

The titles in the Rockport Universal series offer comprehensive and authoritative information and edifying and inspiring visual examples on multidisciplinary subjects for designers, architects, engineers, students, and anyone who is interested in expanding and enriching their design knowledge.

About the Authors:

An expertly written and exquisitely photographed study of Victor Horta, the father of Art Nouveau architecture

Victor Horta (1861–1947) is well known as the creator of Art Nouveau architecture. Following the design of the Hôtel Tassel, Brussels, in 1893, Horta produced more than forty buildings during the following decade. This new book discusses the many influences on his designs, and his legacy. Detailed descriptions of nineteen projects, including Edicule Lambeaux, Hôtel Autrique, Hôtel Max Hallet and the Brugmann Hospital, are illustrated with Horta’s original drawings and specially commissioned photographs by award-winning architectural photographer Alastair Carew-Cox. It includes extensive photographs of Hôtel Solvay, one of Horta’s most important works. Access to photographers had been denied for many years, but was granted to the authors in 2016 in recognition of their significant contribution to the study of Horta.

Victor Horta: The Architect of Art Nouveau has been prepared in collaboration with the Horta Museum, Brussels, ensuring that it is both accurate and up to date. It will appeal to anyone interested in Art Nouveau, one of the great aesthetic movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and one that laid the foundations for the development of modernism in architecture and interior design.

About the Authors:

David Dernie is an architect and educator. He studied at the University of Cambridge and then became a Rome Scholar at the British School of Rome and was elected a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.
