Hand Hewn is a gorgeous celebration of the traditions and artistry of timber-frame building, a 7,000-year-old craft that holds an enduring attraction for its simple elegance and resilience. Internationally renowned timber-frame architect and craftsman Jack A. Sobon offers a fascinating look at how the natural, organic forms of trees become the framework for a home, with profiles of the classic tools he uses to hand hew and shape each timber, and explanations of the engineering of the wooden joinery that connects the timbers without a single nail. Inspiring photos of Sobon’s original interior home designs, as well as historical examples of long-lived structures in Europe and North America, make this a compelling tribute to the lasting value of artisanal craftsmanship and a thoughtful, deliberate approach to designing buildings.

About the Author:

Jack A. Sobon is an architect and builder specializing in timber-framed buildings. A founding director of the Timber Framer’s Guild of North America and founder of the Traditional Timber Frame Research and Advisory Group, Sobon has devoted his 38-year career to understanding the craft of timber framing. Using only traditional hand tools, he has framed and erected over 50 structures. He is the author of Build a Classic Timber-Framed House and coauthor of Timber Frame Construction. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Sobon teaches and consults nationally on traditional building structures and timber-framing techniques.

Cutting-edge examples of the use of optical illusion in design — from trompe l’oeil to anamorphosis — to solve various challenges, be they space or budget-related, or that act as aesthetic features in architecture and the fields that rub elbows with it: art, design, and furniture.

This magical volume presents the startling world of illusion in design as employed by today’s architects, interior designers, furniture designers, and others at work bending the appearance of reality for purposes of aesthetics or practicality or fun. From a faux bookcase that masks a room or Prohibition-style bar, to the mind-boggling Escher-like effects achieved by Casa Ceramica, whose optical illusion of a floor dips into valleys and rises into mounds (but is in reality flat), the book is a revelation and an inspiration. It offers to us the possibility that nearly anything can be done, if it can be imagined — even in our own homes.

The authors look at residences across the globe, as well as spaces beyond the home, that utilize a myriad of surprising techniques.

Included are projects by conceptual designers such as Studio Malka and Vector Architects, as well as established practitioners such as Ferguson and Shamamian, G. P. Schafer, Peter Pennoyer, Redd/Kaihoi, and others, and all will surprise and engage the inspired viewer who will see that nearly anything can be done, if it can be imagined.

Contemporary Residential Architecture and Interiors Photographed by James Silverman

Endless expanses. Interior design, architecture, and spectacular views of sweeping landscapes. Infinite Space showcases James Silverman’s masterful photography of stunning houses.

This book is a dazzling compilation of dream houses with a view, photographed by James Silverman on his travels. Whether of a remote mountain cabin in Norway, a sensuous desert oasis in Morocco, or a monolithic concrete home in Switzerland, Silverman’s photographs capture the seemingly uninterrupted flow between interiors and exteriors. The featured architecture is defined by elements that absorb, reflect, or deliberately break with their surroundings.

Silverman’s images play with perspective and sightlines. They underline the harmony of perfectly composed juxtapositions of built structures and natural landscapes. Collected here, they also show how “infinite space” has established itself as a key precept of contemporary architecture around the world.

About the Author:

James Silverman is one of the foremost photographers of architecture and interiors in the world today. A Briton who resides in Sweden travelling the world for his projects. Images by Silverman appear regularly in magazines such as Architectural Digest, Interior Design, and Dwell.

Current modes of residential design are facing challenges of both philosophy and form. Approaches that have prevailed in past decades no longer sustain new demands and require innovative rethinking. The need for a new outlook is propelled by fundamental changes to the environment, economy and society.

Design for passive solar gain, solar-powered homes, minimising a dwelling's physical footprint, Net-Zero residences and preserving a site's natural assets are some of the strategies that the architects and builders featured in this book are integrating into their thought processes and design practices.

An important book written by a world expert in the field, Inspired Homes offers information on contemporary sustainable design concepts and illustrates them with examples of truly outstanding design.

About the Author:

Avi Friedman is a professor of architecture at McGill University, Canada, an honorary professor at Lancaster University, UK, and president of Avi Friedman Consultants, Inc., a design firm with a focus on affordable and sustainable residential environments. He has written fourteen books and his design work and projects have been cited in magazines, newspapers and TV shows, including Good Morning America, Dream Builders and Stewart Brand’s How Buildings Learn. In 2000, Wallpaper* included him in their list of ten people ‘most likely to change the way we live’.

For those who crave the tranquillity of nature, fifty houses selected from around the world with the most ecologically sustainable and innovative breakthroughs in architecture and design.

Seeking the perfect escape from city life and congestion? This book is filled with environmentally low-impact homes and retreats using eco-friendly materials and technology that reduce the carbon footprint and lower its energy needs, all built within the past ten years. The broadening interest in back to nature and homesteading plays a role, and many new structures are examples of sustainability that are in touch with nature, far from the madding crowd but not only for the select few.

International in scope, the book is an A to Z of ideas for the twenty-first century, from a pavilion in Argentina to a forest house in New Zealand, all designed to have minimal architectural traces--made with local materials that harmonize with the surrounding environment. An outdoor care retreat outside Oslo provides space where visitors can benefit from the therapeutic qualities of nature; a residence in Tottori, Japan, adapts with the changing seasons; a treehouse in Cape Town uses cylindrical towers that are elevated on stilts, offering views among the trees; and in Quebec, three geodesic domes were designed as part of an eco-tourism project to highlight the area's natural beauty. Each house is paired with photographs and plans.

Presenting their new and recent projects, Lake|Flato Architects demonstrate the inexhaustible potential of the modern house to enter into a dialogue with nature.

Lake|Flato Architects, based in San Antonio and Austin, believe first and foremost that architecture should be rooted in its particular place, responding in a meaningful way to the natural or built environment. Using local materials and partnering with the best local craftsmen, Lake|Flato seek to create buildings that are tactile and modern, environmentally responsible and authentic, artful and crafted.

Now more than thirty years since its founding, the firm has grown along with the range and complexity of its projects, yet it still considers the desire to build in partnership with the land to be an approach that remains valid and increasingly resonant. Light, airy, and clear — Danish single-family homes set standards

The human being was at the center of Danish Modernism. Traditional craftsmanship and a high degree of quality influenced both design and architecture. Besides numerous groundbreaking public buildings, the fifties and sixties saw the design of many nearly ideal single-family homes based on an aesthetic that focused on being true to the materials, honesty in construction, and the reduction of form. Built of wood and brick and with practical, informal floor plans and large glass surfaces that opened up the interior of the house to nature, the best of these homes still fulfill their tasks to this day.

This is a compendium of selected buildings in detail, including icons such as Utzon House by Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen’s Siesby House, or the Bøgh Andersen House by Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. It includes new, four-color photographs that document the buildings as well as discussions on the history of each one’s design and construction. Biographies of the architects round out the volume.

A monograph on leading South African architecture studio SAOTA.

Light Space Life is the first monograph from the internationally recognised South African architecture studio SAOTA, known for crafting exceptional modern buildings that forge powerful connections to their extraordinary settings. Presenting memorable and distinctive residences selected from its wide-ranging global output, the book celebrates thirty-five years of innovative residential design from Lagos to Los Angeles, including houses from the dramatic South African coast where it all began.

SAOTA is led by Stefan Antoni, Philip Olmesdahl, Greg Truen, Philippe Fouché, Mark Bullivant and Logen Gordon, and has designed luxury residential and commercial projects on six continents. The practice cites spirit of enquiry and close examination of function and form as hallmarks of its work, as well as the use of the most current technology, including virtual reality, in its design processes.

This monograph features twenty-three recent residential projects from around the world, with a particular focus on Africa, illustrated with colour photography and including a foreword by SAOTA’s client Reni Folawiyo, founder of the West African fashion label, Alara.

A celebration of the recent work of McAlpine, the award-winning architectural and interior design firm, with a collection of residences embracing modernism, classicism, and romanticism.

The work of renowned firm McALPINE has always communicated the power of romanticism, speaking directly to the heart through the beauty and poetry of the home. Tapping diverse influences, the residences draw from architectural languages ranging from Elizabethan and Dutch to colonial Caribbean and agrarian American. The book opens with Bobby McAlpine’s own newly designed house, featuring exquisite spaces that are modern in expression but classical in order and balance. Other projects include a white-on-white neoclassical pavilion-by-the-sea in the Bahamas; a masonry dwelling in the rolling hills of Virginia; a quintessential American country house in Tennessee that combines the familiarity of a farmhouse with crisp minimalism; and an exuberant house sited on the edge of a pastoral golf course in Alabama. Freely choosing from architecture’s treasury, the assembly of houses is familiar, bold, and surprising, all at the same time — reflecting the complexity of the human experience.

A rare glimpse inside Scandinavia’s new generation of 21st-century homes

In a climate that ranges from cold, dark and unforgiving to endless sun and crystalline skies, the homes of the Nordic countries are lifted by ever-changing and dramatic natural light balanced by an intrinsic sense of warmth. Nordic architects today are as much informed by vernacular traditions and natural materials as their forebears, but the most recent generation of practitioners reflects a new appetite for spatial exploration and changing lifestyles.

Divided into four chapters – rural cabins, coastal retreats, town houses and country homes – this survey of over forty of Scandinavia’s finest and most innovative houses features work by a broad spectrum of leading architects, such as Jon Danielsen Aarhus, Tham & Videgård, Snorre Stinessen, Reiulf Ramstad and Todd Saunders. Structured by terrain to reveal the full diversity of the landscape and its architectural challenges, the book is full of fresh thinking about living spaces that are at once universal and distinctively Nordic. From country houses complete with traditional Nordic fireplaces, saunas, window seats and verandas, to remote cabin hideaways and artist’s studios, there are details and grand ideas that can be applied to residential design anywhere. A reference section includes an appendix of architectural plans.

He is the author of many books on the subject, including Mountain Modern, New Brazilian House, Vertical Living, Mid Century Modern Complete, The Iconic Interior, Mediterranean Modern, New Natural Home and The Iconic House, all published by Thames & Hudson.
