About the authors:

Anouska Hempel, Lady Weinberg, is of Swiss, German and Irish ancestry. She grew up in New Zealand, arriving in London in the mid-1960s after extensive travels. Here, she established herself as a leading designer renowned for her sophistication and style, creating hotels and interiors as well as sensational gardens, clothes and food. Her practice, Anouska Hempel Design, works extensively in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and the Middle and Far East.

Marcus Binney studied History of Art and Architecture at Cambridge. His interest in interiors grew from writing articles for
Country Life, which were subsequently published as The Great Houses of Europe and became a 39-part television series. His other books include The Ritz Hotel London, In Search of the Perfect House, The Women who Lived for Danger and Secret War Heroes. He is Architecture Correspondent of The Times.

Belinda Harley has produced acclaimed books on Harry’s Bar and Annabel’s in London. She has a special interest in the design of hotels and restaurants.

About the Author:

Oscar Riera Ojeda is the author of The New American House and Contemporary World Architects, and editor of several other volumes. Peter Bohlin is principal in the firm of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. James Cutler, formerly with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, now practices architecture in Washington State. Thomas Fisher is Dean of the College of Architecture at University of Minnesota, and former editor of Progressive Architecture magazine.

In two volumes (Vol. II will appear in September 2010) a few of the most beautiful, recently finished private homes are presented, from across the five continents and selected with a single common factor: the close relationship between architecture and nature.

In our modern, high-tech society, traditional craftsmanship has increasingly had to give way to mass production. Synthetic materials have taken over from natural ones, and the world of construction in 2008 appears to revolve around efficiency, standardisation and cost optimisation.

However, a growing number of individuals are reacting against these tendencies by working to create authentic and personal living environments.
