The latest in this successful series, this book features around 150 of the most important buildings in the history of world architecture – from the pyramids and Parthenon to some of the most significant works by recent architects.

The buildings are organized by type – from places of worship and public buildings to houses – and are divided into nine chapters, each with an informative introduction that surveys the history of that type. For each building there are numerous, accurate scale drawings showing a combination of floor plans, elevations and sections as appropriate, all specially redrawn for this book.

The quality and number of the line drawings, together with the authoritative text by a renowned architectural historian, allow all the buildings to be understood in detail and make this an invaluable resource for students.

Featuring more than 100 of the most significant and influential buildings of the twentieth century, this second edition includes both classic works by such seminal architects as Le Courbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Alvar Aalto, as well as those by more recent masters, such as Norman Foster, Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas. Addtional buildings and images make this new edition even more comprehensive and up-to-date.

For each of the buildings included there are numerous, accurate scale plans showing typical floors, together with elevations, sections and site plans where appropriate. All of these have been specially commissioned for the book and are based on the most reliable information and sources. There is also a concise text explaining the significant architectural features of the building and the influences it shows or generated, together with full-colour images. Cross-references to other buildings in the book highlight the various connections between these key structures.

There are few images of 20th-century architecture more iconic than the nighttime view of Case Study House #22 set on its eagle’s-nest site high above the lights of Los Angeles. With his two innovative houses for the famous project of the Arts and Architecture magazine, American architect Pierre Koenig (1925-2004) became one of the leading figures of the Modern movement in America. While still a student of architecture, he designed and built his first exposed steel house in 1950, proving that the use of prefabricated materials could allow for spatial freedom in affordable houses. Koenig’s houses, like the Johnson House (1962) or the Oberman House (1962), are a direct response to Southern California’s extremely warm and dry climate. His work is deeply marked by his commitment to environmentally and socially responsible design. His houses have thus become characteristic of the spirit of a whole generation: they perfectly capture the excitement and optimism of the American postwar society.

A monograph devoted to the great Russian architect who is considered one of the leading interpreters of the aesthetic and social ideals of Constructivism, the Soviet avant-garde architectural movement. The volume offers a repositioning of Mel’nikov’s works within the context of the Moscow of the Twenties and Thirties. It highlights his ideational (in the unrealised projects) and concrete (in those realised) contributions to the construction of contemporary Moscow through a selection of models, flanked by the original designs of the buildings, cartographic reconstructions of the city of Moscow and original photographs. The essays explore in detail Mel’nikov’s biography, his professional education in the Twenties, Stuttgart’s architecture school and the avant-garde (1918-1945), Mel’nikov and his dialogue with the city, and works from the first half of the Twenties up to 1936. The volume ends with the complete list of Mel’nikov’s works and an up-to-date bibliography.

The iron colossus: the construction of the Eiffel Tower in XXL-sized drawings and photographs When it was completed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was the highest structure in the world, measuring 300 meters (984 feet). Built for the World’s Fair, it was initially granted a 20-year permit; this permit was thankfully extended and now the Eiffel Tower is one of the world’s most famous structures, having become practically synonymous with Paris itself and receiving more than six million visitors annually. This XL reprint explores the design and construction of this remarkable building; published in 1900 as a large folio by Gustave Eiffel himself in a limited edition of 500 copies, the original was never sold on the market — it was exclusively given and donated by Eiffel. Featuring 53 double-page plates of 4.300 technical drawings explaining the design as well as 33 photographs of the construction, the book reveals the complex and fascinating process of bringing the Eiffel Tower to life. Though the technical drawing will especially appeal to designers wishing to discover the engineering genius behind Eiffel’s masterpiece, everyone can appreciate this very rare and special book about Paris’s glorious mascot.

Born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887-1965) adopted his famous pseudonym after publishing his ideas in the review L’Esprit Nouveau in 1920. The few buildings he was able to design during the 1920s, when he also spent much of his time painting and writing, brought him to the forefront of modern architecture, though it wasn’t until after World War II that his epoch-making buildings were constructed, such as the Unité d’Habitation in Marseilles and the Church of Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp.

Architect and engraver Paul Letarouilly dedicated more than 30 years of his life to creating the most complete collection of plans, elevations, and details of the buildings and monuments of Renaissance Rome.

This student's edition of his achievement features highlights from five massive volumes, originally published between 1825 and 1882. Its systematic overview illustrates the principles of design behind the works of Michelangelo, Sangallo, Peruzzi, Vignola, Bramante, Bernini, Fontana, dalla Porta, Maderno, Borromini, and other great builders of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Letarouilly's engravings, which illustrate the translation of the principles behind classical architecture into the new age of the Renaissance, served as a major source of inspiration from the moment of their publication, and they remain standard references to this day. This edition includes informative text by classical architect and scholar John Barrington Bayley that offers insights into the architecture of Rome's palaces, villas, and squares as well as St. Peter's and the Vatican.

Ideal for students of classical, Renaissance, and Roman architecture, this affordable volume also constitutes a useful guide for visitors to Rome.

Glasgow Style: The life and work of Glasgow School pioneer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Scottish architect, designer, and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) was one of the earliest pioneers of modern architecture and design. While he never received major recognition in his hometown of Glasgow, his bold new blend of simplicity and poetic details inspired modernists across Europe.

Mackintosh s avant-garde approach embraced a variety of media as well as fresh stylistic devices. His multi-faceted oeuvre incorporated architecture, furniture, graphic design, landscapes, and flower studies. He embraced strong lines, elegant proportions, and natural motifs, combining a healthy dose of japonisme with a modernist sensibility for function. He preferred bold black typography, restrained shapes, and tall, generous windows suffusing rooms with light.

Mackintosh's projects in Glasgow include the famous Willow Tearooms, the private residences Windyhill and The Hill House, and the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, widely considered his masterwork. Much of his work was collaborative practice with his wife, fellow artist Margaret Macdonald. The couple made up half of the loose Glasgow collective known as The Four; the other two were Margaret's sister, Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair.

On the continent, this Glasgow Style was met with delight. In Italy, Germany, and, in particular, Austria, artists of the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau drew much from its rectilinear, yet lyrical, forms. In this introductory book, we take in Mackintosh's practice across art, architecture, and design to explore his particular combination of the statuesque and sensual and its vital influence on modernist expression across Europe.

Excellently framed and designed, with bold, receding arches, the open timber roofs of the medieval period featured massive mouldings, carved timbers, and intricate tracery. Today, these roofs are recognized for their striking beauty, rich ornamentation, and the consummate skills of the carpenters and builders who crafted them.

This excellent reproduction of a rare nineteenth-century volume includes numerous full-page illustrations and construction details revealing a wealth of information on the major roof styles (tie-beam, trussed rafter, hammer-beam, and collar-braced) of medieval English churches. More than 50 illustrations of 34 English churches are included, among them the exquisite double hammer-beam roof of Knapton Church in Norwich, the richly ornamented roof over Trinity Chapel, Cirencester Church, in Gloucestershire, and the magnificent roof over Wymondham Church, in Norfolk, in which hammer-beams, boldly projecting into the nave, are exquisitely carved into figures of angels with expanding wings.

These and many more masterly constructions are captured in the authors' own geometric and perspective drawings (done on-site), superbly reproduced here in detailed, highly accurate engravings. In addition to a wealth of pictorial detail, the authors also provide an informative general introduction to the major types of roof construction, as well as expert commentary on each individual roof, describing its distinguishing characteristics, ornament, measurements, and other details.
Artists and illustrators will prize these beautifully rendered plates for their beauty and detail, while architects, antiquarians, and lovers of things medieval will appreciate the authenticity of the plates and the knowledgeable commentary of the architect-authors.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the founding fathers of modern architecture. The creator of the Barcelona Pavilion (1929), the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois (1945–1951) and the Seagram Building in New York (1954–1958), Mies was one of the founders of a new architectural style. Well known for his motto "less is more," he sought a kind of refined purity in architectural expression that was not seen in the reduced vocabulary of other Bauhaus members. His goal was not simply building for those of modest income but building economically in terms of sustainability, both in a technical and aesthetical way; the use of industrial materials such as steel and glass were the foundation of this approach. Though the extreme reduction of form and material in his work garnered some criticism, over the years many have tried - mostly unsuccessfully - to copy his original and elegant style.

This book explores more than 20 of his projects between 1906 and 1967, from his early work around Berlin to his most important American buildings.

Mighty Morris. The arts and crafts power of designer William Morris

William Morris was a polymath designer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, associated with England’s Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as well as Arts and Crafts movement. His prolific design work included tiles, embroidery, tapestries, wallpaper, and carpets and championed handcraftsmanship, natural dyes, “art for all”, and beautiful patterns of subtly stylized natural forms.

William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the greatest creative figures of the 19th century. As a visionary designer, as well as a manufacturer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, he pioneered the Arts and Crafts movement of the Victorian era, and left an extraordinary influence on architecture, textile, and interior design.

This richly illustrated book offers a suitably beautiful introduction to Morris’s colourful life and all aspects of his design work, including interiors, tiles, embroidery, tapestries, carpets, and calligraphy. Though best known in his lifetime as a poet and author, it is these exquisite designs that secured Morris’s posthumous reputation. As page after page dazzles with their beautiful patterns and forms, we explore the pioneering craftsmanship and natural motifs that inspired them, as well as Morris’s remarkable cultural legacy, through British textiles, Bauhaus, and even modern environmentalism.

The first comprehensive survey of the subject in more than 20 years, this lavish volume documents nearly 100 Mughal sites and monuments in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

'Mughal Architecture & Gardens' gives an insight into what is undoubtedly one of the most impressive groups of monuments and gardens ever to be ascribed to a single royal lineage. Innovative and inspirational, these 16th and 17th century constructions demonstrate the staggering wealth and power of those responsible for their creation, notably the emperors Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Mughal architecture is a remarkable hybrid that fuses building forms and decorative schemes from Iran and Central Asia with long-established Indian practice. The most famous examples are the Red Fort in Dehli and Taj Mahal in Agra. This beautifully illustrated book outlines the history of Mughal architecture and gardens, from stylistic developments under different emperors, to the geometric origins of Mughal design and decoration. Now the gardens are mostly lost, but Michell carefully depicts how they would have been; their structures and layouts, the favoured varieties of colourful flowers and scented plants, and the laborious but innovative methods sometimes used to create running water in areas without natural springs and streams.

The author gives particular attention to the major monuments and gardens in the imperial centres of Mughal power, namely Dehli, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Lahore. These sections are accompanied by specially commissioned architectural plans as well as over 250 stunning colour photographs. Written by a leading authority on Indian architecture, this magnificent book is the quintessential guide to Mughal architecture and garden design.

About the Authors:

George Michell is an architectural historian, specialising in ancient Indian architecture. He obtained his PhD from the School of Oriental African Studies, University of London, has directed courses on Asian architecture at the Architectural Association, London, and was co-editor of the journal 'Art and Archaeology Research Papers' from 1972 to 1982. Since the 1980s, he has co-directed an international team of scholars and students at Vijayanagara, the medieval Hindu site in Karnataka. George Michell has also lectured at universities and museums throughout the USA, Europe, India and Australia. Among his many publications are 'The Royal Palaces of India', 'Islamic Heritage of the Deccan', 'Architecture of the Islamic World: Its History' and 'Social Meaning and Palaces of Rajasthan'. Amit Pasricha lives in New Delhi and comes from a family of photographers. A well-known architectural and social documentary photographer, his work has been exhibited in India, London and New York. His photographs have also been published in several books, including 'Dome over India: Rashtrapati Bhavan', 'Horizons: The Tata-India Century' and 'India: Then & Now'. Pasricha's most recent publication is the panoramic collector's edition, 'The Monumental India Book', winner of the Indian Tourism Award, 2008.
