Arata Isozaki is one of Japan’s greatest architects and a commanding presence in international architecture, as demonstrated in such buildings as The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles., the Disney Building in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, and the New Tokyo City Hall. One of the highlights of this book is that it publishes, for the first time, the extraordinary, huge, extremely private and secluded, residential complex in Washington State that was built for Bill and Melinda Gates. Each house is presented on at least thirty pages, and is depicted by sumptuous new color photography, richly detailed conceptual sketches, presentation drawings, and construction documents.

About the Author:

Oscar Riera Ojeda is the author of The New American House and Contemporary World Architects, and editor of several other volumes. Peter Bohlin is principal in the firm of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. James Cutler, formerly with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, now practices architecture in Washington State. Thomas Fisher is Dean of the College of Architecture at University of Minnesota, and former editor of Progressive Architecture magazine.

With her progressive architectural office Archi-Tectonics, Winka Dubbeldam has advanced to the very top of the New York architecture scene. Her innovative projects are grounded within the context of urban planning, society and technology and attest to a unique interplay of materials and methods. This monograph presents an impressive overview of the projects that have endowed her with international prestige.

Architecton Architectural Bureau, formed by Zusik Alexander Ivanovich and Ekaterina Seregina, has been the recipient of many major international awards.

With a close experience of the construction industry gained from Arksim a former Soviet-Chinese architecture and construction enterprise, the core operations of the practice have been wide and varied: hotels and vacation resorts complexes, commercial and public buildings, restaurants and private houses. Architects 49 is part of the 49 group - a multi-disciplined firm of design professionals and consultants ranging from architecture, engineering and construction management to interior design, landscape design, large-scale planning, graphic design and publications. This monograph on the Australian and New Zealand architects, Architectus, presents 25 buildings with photographs, plans, sections and some details. Architectus was formed in 2001 based on a collaborative design partnership between Patrick Clifford in Auckland, New Zealand and Lindsay and Kerry Clare in Sydney, Australia.

The work of Architectus spans more than 20 years of practice. It demonstrates a deep concern for making low-impact environmentally sound buildings, and applying this environmental approach to give both experiential and architectural expression to sense of place. The architects eschew digital formalism and seek out an aesthetic based on their readings of climate, the necessity of structure, and the pleasures they take in detailing ordinary materials to celebrate the slight imperfections and irregularities that distinguish the hand-crafted from the machine-finished.

In undertaking to write on Architectus, Beck and Cooper take the view that readers will have already formed a favourable impression of the work. They therefore set out to answer a question both readers and they themselves ask: ‘Why do we like the work?’ They note: ‘What we like about the work of Architectus also reveals something about ourselves. As critics, it is our task to identify the intentions in the work, and to tease out and illuminate the many strands that shape them. It is up to the reader to speculate.’
