This is a monograph on celebrated interior design firm Ricky C T Wong Design. It features 24 recent projects Ricky and Simon Chong live by the philosophy, 'Ambience is a passion that cannot be expressed, but experienced'. They regard it as something surpassing physical beauty, an indulgence that delivers unique vitality, stimulation, and spiritual aestheticism to an interior space. It is the concerted coordination of the whole interior environment: the harmony between spatial proportion, illumination, materials and colours that attains a peak of artistic sensation with which to stimulate people's passions and sublime responses. This powerful ambience is demonstrated in projects including clubhouses, flats, houses and retail spaces.

In a career that spanned the first half of this century, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because his production was so large, this first book to examine his buildings concentrates on the more important ones, which as a body represent an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.

Although Shutze practiced from 1912 to 1968, covering the period of the ascendancy of modernism through its final triumph, he remained a firmly committed classicist, practicing out of an office in Atlanta where he produced an extraordinary body of monumental commercial and institutional buildings and country villas.

After graduating from Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed a year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize in 1915. Travelling to Rome later that year, he became a member of one of the earliest classes of fellows to occupy the recently completed American Academy on the Janiculum overlooking the city. The magnificent palazzo designed by America's most renowned architectural firm, McKim, Mead, and White, did not, however, please the fellows, who found it "too new," and therefore not authentic (Shutze would later devote much attention to techniques for instantly aging building facades).

With the coming of the First World War, Shutze and most of his classmates stayed in Rome as Red Cross volunteers, but when the war was over they returned to the Academy and to their studies. During his five years in Rome, Shutze immersed himself in learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He painstakingly measured those buildings as well as the monuments of the Roman Empire, committing the smallest of details to paper and to memory.

Returning to the U.S. in 1920, Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose masterpiece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia where he remained as the epitome of the "gentleman architect," designing some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

The Tadao touch: Ando's complete works to date

"In architecture, there is a part that is the result of logical reasoning and a part that is created through the senses. There is always a point where they clash. I don't think architecture can be created without that collision." - Tadao Ando

A previously unknown portrait of the Italian architect in the role of illustrator and theorist on the militia. Published here for the first time are Palladio's preparatory materials for an illustrated edition of Polybius' Histories alongside Palladio's material for his edition of Julius Caesar' Commentaries, (1575). Long thought to have been lost, his original Polybius has now been recomposed by drawing on three manuscript copies: the mock-up used by Palladio to plan the edition, rediscovered in the London British Library in 1977; a second copy found in Florence in 1986 and a third exemplar only very recently found in the New York Public Library. Here the reproductions of the 43 etchings for the Polybius have been accompanied by 42 etchings which Palladio dedicated to Caesar's deeds. This offers us a complete picture of his effort to reconstruct those excellent features of ancient warfare on which Palladio wished to base his own proposals for reforming the contemporary Venetian militia, as well as to give a different point of view on the history of architecture. The volume includes contributions from several scholars including: Stephen Parkin, Sara Mazzarino, Marco Formisano, Luciano Pezzolo, Claudio Povolo, and Paolo Fiore.

About the Author:

Guido Beltramini is the director of the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura "Andrea Palladio," Vicenza. He has taught Architectural History at the University of Ferrara (Italy) and is the author of: Andrea Palladio. The Complete Illustrated Works (2000) and Palladio privato (2008). He has also edited: Palladio and Northern Europe: Books, Travellers, Architects (with H. Burns, K. Forster, W. Oechslin, 1999), Andrea Palladio e la villa veneta da Petrarca a Carlo Scarpa (with H. Burns, 2005).

Andrea Palladio influenced the history and evolution of Western architecture like no other.

This book is the first of three in a series set to be the largest and most complete publication ever on the work of the great architect. Relying on comparison with drawings in Palladio's Four Books of Architecture (Venice, 1570), the author highlights the links between the realized buildings and the theoretical designs, and between the concepts derived from classical architecture and the work of Vitruvius and their subsequent development.

This volume is an indispensable tool for anyone interested in Palladio's villas.

Indisputably the grande dame of modern design, Andrée Putman burst onto the scene twenty-five years ago with the graphic, black-and-white interiors of the Morgans Hotel in New York.

Since then Putman has gone on to redefine design for a diverse group of prestigious clients, including Karl Lagerfeld, the French Ministry of Culture, and the interior of the supersonic Concorde. Projects since 1980 range from museum interiors, a jewellery line for Christofle, private residences for global trendsetters, and a film set for Peter Greenaway. Putman’s work is the epitome of chic, incorporating cashmere and leather with affordable ceramic tiles and industrial metals for interiors that speak volumes for Putman’s unmistakable style of quiet luxury.

The same attention to detail is given to a simple necklace as to furniture collections, grand offices, and entire spa hotels. Putman is also credited for the revival of once-forgotten early modernist designers, such as Eileen Gray, Robert Mallet-Stevens, and Jean-Michel Frank, whose designs she put back into production and used in her famous interiors. The first comprehensive monograph on Putman’s essential designs in 20 years, Andrée Putman Complete Works will be an indispensable road map of style and elegance to all lovers of modern design.

About the Author:

Donald Albrecht is the curator of architecture and design at the Museum of the City of New York. He prepared the first retrospective of the work of Eero Saarinen and the international traveling exhibition The Work of Charles and Ray Eames. Jean Nouvel is an award-winning French architect.

David Robson, Waruna Gomis
ID: 5787
Видавництво: Tuttle

During the past 25 years of civil war in Sri Lanka, Anjalendran has stayed on, creating architecture that has attracted interest across the entire Indian subcontinent.

In Anjalendran, David Robson explores this unique man and his uncommon vision. Anjalendran’s buildings have a simple directness and although totally modern in spirit, they acknowledge the rich traditions of Sri Lanka. Whether working with ample budgets or at rock bottom cost (like his SOS Children’s Village orphanages), his work focuses not only on creative buildings, but - a la Frank Lloyd Wright - also their landscaping, furniture and decoration.

Just as interesting as the architecture is the process by which Anjalendran works - from home, never employing more than four student assistants, with no office, no secretary, no car and no cell phone. He operates without a bank account and has never signed a contract with either a client or a builder. With stunning color photographs, plan details and behind-the-scenes insights, Anjalendran sheds light on the works of this exceptional man.

Antoine Predock
ID: 1151
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Albuquerque-based Antoine Predock is generally acknowledged as the premier architect practicing in the Southwest, although he also has projects in Denmark, France, Spain, and Morocco.

He is known for a philosophical ethos that does not privilege architecture over environment, but fosters a relationship in which a building is analogous to the landscape in which it is set. Predock's use of such natural materials as adobe and sand-colored stone demonstrate an appreciation for local historical precedent as well as a concern for environmental soundness; however, he is in the vanguard in his use of the most technologically advanced methods of construction. Drawing from the pulse of the land, Predock's work embraces uniqueness of site, referencing local history, culture, myths, and people.

This monograph features his latest work, including Highland Ponds, in Aspen; Austin City Hall, in Texas; the Tacoma Art Museum; and Shadow House, in Santa Fe, among others. Antoine Predock has taught at universities in Italy and Argentina, as well as at Harvard University, Southern California Institute of Architecture, and UCLA. He has won many awards for his work, including the Rome Prize of the American Academy in Rome, National Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architecture (AIA), and the Gran Premio Internacional de Arquitectura de Buenos Aires.

Spanish architect and designer Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) is an important and influential figure in the history of contemporary Spanish art. His use of colour, application of different materials and introduction of movement in his constructions were an innovation in the realm of architecture. In his journal, Gaudí freely expressed his own feelings on art, “the colours used in architecture have to be intense, logical and fertile.”

The author, Jeremy Roe, is interested in a wide range of photography and architectural detail. This interest drives the author and enables him to reveal the context of the art of Barcelona while he guides us through an introduction to Antoni Gaudí, master of some of the most famous constructions, design objects and greatest works in Spanish architecture. This book offers a great insight into Gaudí’s work.
