In 1930, when Albert Frey (1903-1998) came to the US from his native Switzerland, he brought the influence of his mentor, Le Corbusier, with him. The innovative Aluminaire House that he developed together with A. L. Kocher was exhibited in 1932 by Henry-Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson in the legendary show in the Museum of Modern Art in New York “The International Style: Architecture since 1922” as one of the very few American examples of the movement. Soon after, Frey discovered the California desert, where he would settle and complete his most substantial works. Throughout his life, Frey was interested in finding new ways of building, as well as working with and doing research on prefabricated materials, the results of which he regularly published. With visionary talent, Frey built elegant, clearly structured residential houses and was the founder of the “desert modernism” style.

Anyone who visits Barcelona today will come across the works of Antoni Gaudí—the architect who has attracted art-lovers from all over the world to Spain. The Complete Gaudí. Freedom of form with the “Dante of architecture”

Antoni Gaudí merged Orientalism, natural forms, and new materials into a unique Modernista aesthetic that put Barcelona on the global architecture map. The life of Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) was full of complexity and contradictions. In his youth, he courted a glamorous social life and the demeanour of a dandy. By the time of his death in a tram accident on the streets of Barcelona, his clothes were so shabby that passersby assumed he was a beggar.

From the shimmering surface textures and skeletal forms of Casa Batlló to the Hispano-Arabic matrix of Casa Vicens, his work merged the influences of Orientalism, natural forms, new materials, and religious faith into a unique Modernista aesthetic. The author:

Rainer Zerbst studied modern languages at the University of Tübingen and in Wales from 1969 to 1975. From 1976 to 1982 he worked as a research assistant in the Department of English at the University of Tübingen. Since completing his doctorate in 1982, Zerbst has been active as a critic in the fields of art, literature, and theatre.

According to popular wisdom, beauty is within. But nothing is said about how to get it out, or what on earth you can do with it. In this book, the Belgian decorator Geoffroy Van Hulle demonstrates how it can be seen: beauty, on the inside of a house but also on the inside of a life.

Photographer Raf Ketelslagers captures this vision in incredible images, capturing inspirational interiors, while writer and TV presenter Jo De Poorter describes things that can be beautiful, compelling and imposing outside the walls of the house: from the Académie Francais, the Frick Collection, Dusty Springfield and Levi's jeans to a handful of brioches, Bree Van Der Camp, two or three requiems, Viagra, and the holy virgin Mary herself, in the form of a piece of soap.

Geoffroy Van Hulle is a decorator. He decorates houses, apartments and restaurants in the Benelux, the United Kingdom, France and the United States. His style is contemporary eclectic with baroque and classical influences. He is not afraid of color, character and a stuffed crane here and there. As significant sources of inspiration he mentions Leonardo Da Vinci, Tony Duquette, Saint Nicholas and his mother.
