Serenity and tactility have determined the design practice of Alexis Herbosch for 20 years. They form a fil rouge throughout his life and this monograph. They are virtues that are undervalued today. What we see are pure forms and a simple mise-en-scène. We feel nature as our guide, observe the defining light and experience the power of the environment. Like a true master, he chooses the right elements to define an experience. From these, spaces grow that smile at all the senses. The use of natural and regional materials is striking. Think of a script of Boom tiles over old plank floors to limed walls. Stripped of all excess and inspired by the art of Nordic well-being, Alexis captures the essence of the good life in his growing oeuvre. His sober lines and controlled layout are his foundations. He combines a savoir-vivre with his savoir-faire.

HOPSCA (hotel, office, parking, shopping mall, convention, and apartment) is a rising concept for architecture design. With the fast pace of urbanization, we search for an efficient self-sufficient urban model. The projects here make a breakthrough from traditional single-function projects such as commercial places, offices, residences, entertaining places, transportation projects, and so on, to the establishment of organic relationships among them. Here you would find the popular understanding and practice of the burgeoning concept of HOPSCA.

This beautifully illustrated book takes the reader on a journey through a number of outstanding houses designed and built in the California landscape by Berkeley firm WA design.

The firm’s founder David Stark Wilson cites his experiences in nature as the most profound influence on his architecture. In this volume he has chosen to pair images of his architecture beside the images from nature that inspired his designs. The origins of the firm’s work are also deeply rooted in the vernacular buildings of California and this influence is clearly illustrated in this impressive monograph.

Although progressive, the firm’s designs draw heavily on the local vernacular. Ordering principles borrow from the building’s context and often relate metaphorically to the surrounding natural landscape, connecting the building to its site in a meaningful way. Sustainable and solar features are also a crucial component in the firm’s design objectives and are seamlessly integrated with the architecture.

Author Antonio Farré, Foreword by Antonio Cordero Galindo
ID: 15700
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first comprehensive monograph focused on the most spectacular residential projects built and designed by Antonio Farré, one of Mexico’s most distinguished contemporary architects.

This publication showcases a curated and handpicked selection of the most outstanding houses in Mexico.

The projects designed by Antonio Farré represent a one-of-a-kind combination of simplicity and sophistication blended with nature, turning complicated spaces into breathtaking houses. The elegant and monumental structures featured in the book are characterized by the use of local materials, the absence of columns, and large windows. Balance, texture, and earthy colors are often found in Farré’s interiors, creating a timeless and welcoming effect. His work has been published in Design Hunter Mexico, Architectural Digest México y Latinoamérica, Entremuros, D10, and many others.

Superbly photographed, this volume reveals some of the most luxurious Mexican homes, including unseen and little published works. This book is a must-have for architects, interior designers, owners or potential buyers of properties in Mexico, and those passionate about contemporary architecture and design.

About the Author:

Antonio Farré was born and raised in Mexico and was passionate about architecture from an early age. After concluding his studies in 1990, Farré founded his own architecture firm, Farré Arquitectos, working in different fields over the years while maintaining its essence. The firm’s work includes renovations of the Centro Asturiano, a private club in Mexico City; chapels; and public squares. In addition, Farré Arquitectos has built well over 200 homes and more than 50 restaurants that are still standing today. Antonio Cordero Galindo is a Mexican author who is passionate about history.

Friedrich Stowasser (1928, Vienna – 2000, New Zealand), better known by the name of Friedrich Hundertwasser, was a painter, thinker, and architect, or rather a “doctor of architecture", as he declared in his manifesto of the 24th of January 1990.

His architectural creations, organic and full of imagination, may have been influenced by the works of Antoni Gaudí. Yet, Hundertwasser was more radical in his philosophy. As expressed in his remarkable eco-artistic manifestos, and other achievements (paintings, posters, stamps, houses, and architectural designs), his message remains profoundly and viscerally ecological.

His pictorial work is characterised by an organic abundance of forms and by the brilliance of its colours.
Hundertwasser is an artist who is difficult to classify. With his tremendous love of nature, he is one of the pioneers of humanist and environmentalist architecture, which attempted to reconcile creativity and ecology. This vision has been shared by many young artists all over the world and by the founders of eco-villages.

The Author:

Pierre Restany remains the most influential French art critic of the second half of the 20th century. A witness to the dynamic New York art scene, he founded, along with Yves Klein, the “New Realism" an artistic movement created in reaction to Pop Art, which expressed the distress of the post-war period.
Always alert and on the look-out for a new artistic creation, this eminent art critic became interested in Hundertwasser’s fascinating work and ecological theory. They met on several occasions: in Paris in 1957, and also in Vienna, where they spent three days together. This text is an account of the encounters between two exalted giants of the artistic scene, as well as the homage of a critic to the great Austrian artist.

Our epoch has found in the painter-king the most formidable accuser of totalitarian thinking, from nuclear energy to the organization of our living environment. He lives up totally to his way of seeing things, against the contradictions of our post-industrial society.

His trump card is his art, the creator of beauty: of natural harmony, peace and joy. The extra-lucid power of his analytical sensitivity makes him the perfect decoder of global culture and its guided information. Hundertwasser reveals the prodigious quality resources of naturist empiricism against the abusive uniformity of rationalist totalitarianism, against the tyranny of ugliness and the iron rule of its straight line.

It is all inscribed in his painting, which is the revelation of sensitivity, the open book of destiny; it translates intuition into images, and those images inspire the major orientations of his thinking and action. When concretized moreover, those orientations fit perfectly into the practical norms of his aesthetic. Based on the empirical, artisan and organic intelligence of man-nature relations, his project for society is a cry of hope in beauty, a sine qua non-condition for human development.

Viennese-native Friedrich Stowasser (1928-2000) called himself  Hundertwasser Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt. True to the colorful variety of his names, he pursued many activities as a painter, architect and ecologist, and as "one who awakens identities." This presentation of Hundertwasser's work in all of its different facets is guided by the artist's own view of himself and his purpose. And, because his work is virtually inseparable from his personal life and political activity, a vivid portrait of the artist takes shape before the reader's eyes. Excerpts from conversations between the author and the artist lend a sense of immediacy and authenticity to the narration.

The dream of a world of peace

"A world full of color," says Friedensreich Hundertwasser, "is synonymous with paradise." With his demonstrations and actions, his manifestos for nature, for more human-oriented architecture and for the improvement of the quality of life and living conditions, Friedensreich Hundertwasser is one of the most fascinating artists of the 20th century. He became a symbolic figure, not only as a painter but also as an architect, ecologist and philosopher, in particular for all those who are searching for a life tuned to the natural and the human.

This anniversary edition consists of the first volume of TASCHEN’s limited edition Friedensreich Hundertwasser, 1928–2000, and offers a complete presentation of Hundertwasser's work, personality and life, with detailed texts by Hundertwasser's longtime friend Wieland Schmied.

The author:
Wieland Schmied has been President of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 1995. He has organised over one hundred art exhibitions and is the author of many books on 19th- and 20th century art, including monographs on Caspar David Friedrich, Alfred Kubin, Giorgio de Chirico, Edward Hopper and Francis Bacon.

In the past, buildings and other constructions representing singular moments for the community were called monuments. Their origin was expression of power, celebration of ritual or collective affirmation. In the contemporary world, a project that aspires to be exceptionally expressive is commonly called an icon. This book claims that star-architects and their “iconic” architecture are no longer valid today, as these projects are all driven by marketing machineries. Architecture should re-emerge as a credible artefact and fulfill the transcendent demands of our time. The publication begins with a series of general texts on themes that vary but all share a common critical look at the role of the iconic on the recent architecture scene.

The HawkinsBrown architectural firm in London, founded in 1988 by Roger Hawkins and Russell Brown, is one of the up-and-coming offices on the international architecture scene. The spectrum of the firms works ranges from residences and interior design by way of office buildings and various public buildings such as theaters and university buildings all the way to urban planning, such as designs for squares and subway stations. HawkinsBrown strives to come to an optimal result in a process that integrates all of the players. HawkinsBrown has received numerous awards for various projects, such as the RIBA Award for its Wysing Arts Centre (2008), the New Chemistry Building of the University of Oxford (2009), and the New Art Exchange art center in Nottingham (2009) and the BREEAM Award for Eltham Hill Technology College (2008). This book documents some twenty-five buildings from the past five years. The projects presented include the Tottenham Court Road Underground Station, one of the busiest Tube stations in London with a hundred thousand passengers daily (to be completed in 2011); the Stratford Regional Station in London, an access platform for one of the major sites for the Olympic Games (to be completed in 2010); Park Hill, the master plan for a neighborhood in Sheffield (to be completed in 2011), and the Dubai Arts Pavilion in the United Arab Emirates.

John Ike, Thomas Kligerman, and Joel Barkley speak architectural languages of the past with a sure command of grammar and syntax and a rich vocabulary of form and detail. As designers they build upon what went before to extend the trajectory of architecture.
— Robert A. M. Stern

The signature residential works of Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects bring together historic precedent and contemporary taste with a considered approach to detail, material, and craft. Based in New York and San Francisco, the firm incorporates elements from the great eras and the great practitioners of architecture: the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Deco, Modernism, Colonial Revival, Shingle Style; Sir Edwin Lutyens, Harrie T. Lindeberg, George Howe, Bernard Maybeck, and McKim, Mead & White. Yet ever present is a keen awareness of the modern world, notably in an emphasis on natural light and open views and a responsiveness to the unique qualities of a site.

The twenty-one houses and apartments in this lavishly illustrated volume, the first published on Ike Kligerman Barkley, represent the remarkable breadth of the practice. A cottage in Michigan reveals a comprehensive investigation of craft traditions, while a Hawaiian beach retreat explores the vernacular Polynesian long-house. A sleek Manhattan loft evokes the industrial history of its neighborhood, while an oceanfront villa recalls Carlo Scarpa’s interweaving of past and present. Unusual, even unlikely combinations - an English-influenced Shingle Style house the firm terms “Shinglish,” a Virginia horse farm that draws equally on classical formality and easy rusticity - embody the firm’s sophisticated balance between historic model and modern refinement.

Just as novelists and filmmakers gravitate toward genres that suit the themes they choose to explore, we look for the historic style that represents the best vehicle for the architectural story we wish to tell.
