Malalysian-born Soo Chan (Chan Soo Khian) is among the new breed of Southeast Asian architects whose architecture is not only modern and refreshing, but also reflects the spirit of Asia. Having studied and trained in the US, Soo Chan returned to Asia in the 1990s to establish his own multi-disciplinary architectural practice, Soo Chan Design Associates (SCDA) in Singapore. German architect Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) studied and practiced architecture his entire adult life but did not build a major building until 1963 when his impressive Berlin Philharmonie finally came to life. The fact that he stayed in Germany during the Second World War prevented him from realizing grandiose projects and caused him to concentrate more on interiors than exteriors for many years. Nevertheless, Scharoun`s sculptural designs, influenced by the expressionist-utopian circle "Gläserne Kette" of which he was a member, did not go unnoticed and were among the best of his generation.

Hailing from Vienna, Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887–1953) emigrated to Chicago in 1914, like his lifelong friend and rival Richard Neutra. Eventually hired by Frank Lloyd Wright to work in Los Angeles, Schindler took cues from notions found in Cubism and the International Style to shape his unique vision: a style he called “space architecture,” combining geometrical shapes, bold lines, and materials such as wood and concrete, with space as a medium in its own right, one to be controlled just like colour or mass.

This radical approach earned Schindler little recognition in his lifetime — but today, he is hailed as one of America’s most important Modernist pioneers. Kim Young-Sub + Kunchook-Moonhwa Architect Associates has been involved in the construction of some of the most significant religious centres in Korea. The firm's work is deeply rooted in a fundamental spirituality, which is also found in Korean culture. Traditional Korean design is about subtle curves rather than straight lines, roofs that reach to the sky rather than remaining flat, and finishes of thick curved pine. These influences are clear in Kim Young-Sub's buildings as is his remarkable attitude towards space, from which he creates churches with large areas, voids, which are about symbolism and landscape. Images of the Mediatheque have widely circulated in architectural media since 1995, when Toyo Ito's competition project revealed a new structural prototype (or archi-type) that expressed the will to incorporate the notions of mobility and fluidity into space and structure. Second in the series of Verb monographs, this book presents the process of design and construction of Ito's prototype during the six years between the building's initial design through to its completion in 2001. The Mediatheque aspires to integrate real and virtual worlds - or, in Ito's words, “the primitive body of natural flow and the virtual body of electronic flow”. Sergey Chernyshev (1881–1963), one of the founders of Soviet urban planning, deservedly occupies a special place among the leading Russian architects of the twentieth century. Already a respected architect before the Russian Revolution, his talent also gained recognition in the Soviet era. Chernyshev’s large-scale designs attracted widespread attention – from the 1935 Master Plan for the Reconstruction of Moscow to his work on the restoration of cities such as Kiev, Leningrad, Warsaw, and Berlin. Chernyshev’s designs have achieved global fame and recognition. Even in the dramatic years under the Stalin regime, Sergey Chernyshev sought to embody the concept of an “ideal society” in architecture and urban planning theories. He successfully implemented bold and innovative designs, at the same time managing to adhere to national architectural traditions and remain faithful to his own vision.

Famed Japanese architect Shigeru Ban attended SCI-Arc in California and earned his degree at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York. With offices in Tokyo and Paris, Ban consistently challenges accepted notions of architecture, designing a house without walls, or an exhibition space made from paper tubes and shipping containers. This survey traces his entire career to date, showing clearly why he is one of the world’s most innovative and significant architects. Unlike many of his peers, Ban can create remarkable residences and still find time to design emergency relief housing for disaster areas from Kobe to New Orleans. Often using paper or cardboard tubes as a structural element, his designs give new meaning to the term "Paper Architect." His major completed works include the Furniture House at Lake Yamanaka, Japan, the Curtain Wall House in Tokyo, the Naked House in Kawagoe, Japan, the Japanese Pavilion at Hannover Expo 2000, the mobile Nomadic Museum, and his most recent masterpiece, the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France.

The studio residence of Wendell Burnette Architects is designed to be like an oasis in the Arizona desert, with an interior garden in the entryway full of light, shade, and water. Wendell Burnette’s travels in Europe and Mexico are evident in the international, timeless style found in his architecture. The building is the physical embodiment of the firm’s philosophy, which is the desire to create spaces that engage people. Wendell Burnette Architects is based in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington in Seattle needed transforming as it was overshadowed by large buildings that surrounded it. The award-winning Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects, known for its restoration to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, was commissioned to intervene. The firm was able to integrate site, circulation, building and context that beautifully reconciles the site with the rest of the campus.
