Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker are a multi-award-winning husband-and-wife architectural team whose vast complementary talents are presented in this first monograph of their residential work. Their elegant body of work is mostly concentrated in Chicago's leafy North Shore suburbs. Informed by both modern and classical principles, the traditionally styled homes inhabit these genteel neighbourhoods like fine pieces of furniture. The completed residences seem effortless but the designs behind them tend to be quite complex. Certain elements appear in each of their houses, including classical axial layouts, custom trim that organises spaces, views through glass cabinetry or French doors into other rooms. UN Studio, led by Dutch architects Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, creates spaces that are surprisingly innovative.

Their work doesn`t rehash Modernism but rather embraces the digital age via the invention of new, time-based techniques expanding the imagination, exploding the hierarchy of the design process, and encouraging the input of different disciplines. UNStudio`s architecture is the result of a design strategy that repeatedly and constantly advances in different ways via leitmotifs called "design models." The most important examples of this new kind of architecture are the New Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart and the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam, which has become the town`s new landmark. Another manifest aim is to come up with fundamentally new ideas for complex infrastructure projects and to give these a contemporary structure that fosters future (including urban) development.

This can be seen, for example, at the central train station in Arnhem, at the Ponte Parodi pier in Genoa, and at the Canadian Centre for Architecture´s (CCA) prestigious "Competition for the Design of Cities." This book presents an overview of UN Studio`s work to date.

John Saladino's powerful new book, Villa, is nothing less than a master class in interior and garden design by one of the world's most distinguished architectural designers.

It focuses on the stone ruin in the California hills looking over the Pacific that he has painstakingly refashioned as his dream house. It shows how his principles and passions guided him through the five-year process of reconstruction, restoration and decoration of the house and its gardens.

With the aid of groundplans, drawings, photographs of the house in the 1920s, as it looked when he first bought it and during reconstruction, the author traces the architectural work involved.
