William Burges (1827-81) was arguably the greatest of all Victorian architects. But he was more than just the creator of a modest number of fabulous, and fabulously expensive, buildings. He dreamed of hundreds more, designed dozens, and in addition created some of the most remarkable furniture and jewellery of all time.

He was an art-architect. Rich, clever, well connected and short lived, he was uncompromising, profoundly learned, skilled in every process of design and explosively inventive. A brilliant talker, pungent critic and hilarious companion, he was one of Victorian London's great eccentrics and networkers, though he was bewitched by the Middle Ages.

The great buildings that he completed include Cork Cathedral, Cardiff Castle and the even more eccentric Castell Coch, the great Yorkshire churches of Skelton and Studley Royal, the magnificent country houses of Knightshayes in Devon, and Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute, and his own astonishing Tower House in Kensington. His furniture, fabric and jewellery designs and his unrealised projects were also hugely influential, and the former are now enthusiastically collected.

This book was a landmark in Victorian studies when first published in 1981 and is now completely revised and re-illustrated substantially in colour.

William Morgan began his architectural education at Harvard in 1948. In recognition of Morgan's record of excellence in architectural design, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) elevated him to fellowship in 1975, and shortly after he was elected chairman of the AIA Committee on Design. For Morgan, architecture has integrity when it is inextricably anchored to its place and time, while simultaneously being ordered by principles both universal and timeless. These attributes allow us to characterise his architecture as being at once ancient and modern. The depth of Morgan's historical grounding, derived from first-hand experiences documenting ancient sites, is unequaled among his practicing peers, being more typical of professional archaeologists and architectural historians.

Through his eclecticism, William Morris (1834-1896) was one of the most emblematic personalities of the nineteenth century. He was a painter, architect, poet and engineer.

Roger Wood and Randal Marsh have been in private practice since 1983 after extensive experience in architectural offices in Melbourne, and graduating from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Wood Marsh Architecture has broad experience in interiors, urban design and major public infrastructure. The office has been responsible for the design of many road bridges, freeway sound walls and pedestrian links. In addition to a full range of architecture, including numerous substantial private residences, the office has designed sets and installations for fashion parades, visual art exhibitions and performance works. The company's work has won twenty-nine Royal Australian Institute of Architecture Awards for Excellence including the 1998 and 2006 Victorian Architecture Medal, and the 1998 National Walter Burley Griffin Award for Urban Design.

The architecture and design of Wood Marsh has been judged, nationally and internationally, as possessing great conceptual strength and clarity. Contextual issues of locality and region are used as a foundation for ideas that bring bold and sculptural architecture to our communities.
