'Living Buildings' celebrates the 50th anniversary of Donald Insall Associates, the firm led by British architect Donald Insall. Responsable for the restoration of Windsor Castle after a fire in 1992, Insallís preservation architecture has given longevity to Britainís stately homes, town halls, churches, entire city precincts, hospitals, royal palaces, castles, public buildings and public spaces.

In 1958, Insall and several of his colleagues founded a famous architectural practice in England based on architectural conservation, that is, the salvation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historic buildings and neighborhoods. (In the United States, this practice is called historic preservation.) This book commemorates these 50 years of professional practice, mostly in England, involving some of the United Kingdom's most cherished historic resources (e.g., Windsor Castle, Somerset House, and Covent Garden).

Divided into two sections, the book covers assessing, analyzing, planning, and implementing individual restoration projects ("Organizing the Project") and daily maintenance through radical rehabilitation to contextual new construction ("Degrees of Intervention").

Containing over 600 luxurious color maps, photos, and plans of a wide variety of projects in England, this work could easily serve as a textbook for a beginner's course in historic preservation. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

Published by the interdisciplinary design studio MODU, this "field guide" explores threshold spaces between the interior and the exterior. What are experiences between architecture and the environment? Where can the boundaries between the interior and the urban be drawn? What role does the climate crisis play in this? For their research and design projects, Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem look at three major cities on different continents: New York, Rome, and Tokyo. MODU leaves behind the binary idea of inside and outside and rather understands architecture as an extension of the environment. Thus, it imagines a hybrid of urban space, architecture, and interior space. The book explores the different geographic locations and presents their own design projects.

MODU is a Brooklyn, New York-based design studio working in architecture, urbanism, and interior design. It is led by Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem and focuses on thinking architecture, urbanism, and the environment together. In 2017, they won the Rome Prize.

The name Montessori is widely and inextricably associated with an entirely child-centered and careful pedagogy and education of children. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician, reform educator, and philosopher whose ideas and work have remained influential throughout the world ever since the 1910s. Her educational concept covers entire development from infancy to young adulthood. It is based on the image of the child as a “builder of his or her self” and therefore uses for the first time the form of open teaching and free work in a prepared learning environment.

Montessori schools became trend-setting educational institutions early on, and their concept strongly reflects in their architecture and equipment. Montessori Architecture is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sir Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

Steve Lawrence is a British architect and consultant on sports infrastructure, specialising in the architectural concepts of Montessori education. Benjamin Stæhli is a Swiss architect and photographer who has also worked in Ethiopia and Singapore, and who has been engaged in architectural concepts of Montessori education for many years.

He sits on the Executive Council and Management Committee of the British Educational Suppliers Association, and was chairman of the British Educational Furniture Manufacturers Group from 2012–16.

Terry White (BPhil, MEd, FRSA) has a passion for excellence in the design of schools and environments for learning. He is committed to sharing good practice in the UK and through his international projects and study visits, working directly with learners, teachers, co-educators and design professionals. He has extensive experience in schools and colleges as a headteacher and principal. He has worked in the public and private sectors of education, with national and local government, schools, industry, universities, contractors and design professionals. He was a director of WSP Buildings and a founding director of Edunova. He has been the lead Education Design Advisor on large-scale building programmes, developing and delivering the design brief for over 40 schools.
