About the Author:

Jorge Almada and Anne-Marie Midy are the founders of Casamidy, a highly publicized contemporary furnishings company in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, which began in 1998. Their work has been published in leading lifestyle magazines, among them Elle Decor, Vogue, and World of Interiors.

Christophe Pourny learned the art of furniture restoration in his father’s atelier in the South of France. In this, his first book, he teaches readers everything they need to know about the provenance and history of furniture, as well as how to restore, update, and care for their furniture — from antiques to midcentury pieces, family heirlooms or funky flea-market finds. About the Author:

Christophe Pournyis one of the most esteemed furniture restorers in the business. Top decorators like Bunny Williams trust him to regild Louis XVI bergères and refresh the luster on French-polished 18th-century dining tables. Today, Pourny is the unofficial restorer to the City of New York and counts Uma Thurman and Martha Stewart among his celebrated clients. He frequently appears in top shelter publications, and his handcrafted furniture tonics are sold nationwide.

The International Interior Design Exhibition (iide) came to Brussels with heritage.  First launched in London by Fleur Rossdale as The British Interior Design Exhibition (BIDE) during the 1980's and 1990's, the event was highly acclaimed as a ground breaking showcase for the design industry.  With 30,000 international visitors to each, the exhibition helped propel interior design into the limelight, receiving worldwide press coverage and an insatiable demographic of private clients, hoteliers, designers and developers.  Fleur says ‘Good design has a vital role to play in our everyday lives.  It can improve how we live and function, be it at home, in the workplace, in education or on holiday.  Interiors set a mood, portraying an identity that should feel enhancing and harmonious.’  Fleur, an active interior designer herself, chose Brussels for the re-launch due to the cultural heritage, not least as founders of the Art Nouveau movement. 'Decoration is all about bringing together skilled workmanship, colour, texture and fine art to create a melodious interior to enhance our everyday lives', she says.  

Fleur received much fan mail from visitors in the early days, in particular praising how they found a particular design style they related to, previously unknown to them.

This luxury coffee table book is a tribute to both new Brussels exhibitions, with a short history of all previous exhibitions in London.

This is the first book of its kind devoted to the history of Estel, celebrating eighty years of the furniture manufacturer's activity.

This book takes the reader through Estel's history from the future to the past, working backward in five major phases of the company's progress. These phases are related through various illustrations, best called "dioramas," covering double spreads that fold out, making four full-size pages.

Especially created for the book by Pierluigi Longo, these "dioramas" emerge like modern-day frescoes in which the leading figures of the business world can be observed, along with the production panorama and market environment around them. They represent a sort of visualized concept that not only illustrates and tracks a path through the book, but also lends it concept and structure.

The texts that follow each theme-diorama pivot successively on the company philosophy, the protagonists, the products, and a brief text classifying the furniture-manufacturing sector itself. Hence, the tale unfolds on two fronts simultaneously, interweaving the company's history with the ongoing developments in the sector and in methods of production.

Mario Piazza is one of Italy's leading graphic designers. Maria Giulia Zunino is a journalist who writes on questions of production and design. Pierluigi Longo is an illustrator whose work is featured in leading Italian publications.

Enchanting watercolors from the art of design

In the rank of great Danish designers, Finn Juhl (1912–1989) is mentioned in the same breath with Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen. He became particularly well known for his sculptural, seemingly organic tables, chairs, and sofas. Alessandro Mendini, born in Milan in 1931, is a major theorist and a driving force behind avant-garde design in Italy. Aside from his artistic career, he was also editor of the architecture magazines Casabella and Modo and publisher of the famous Domus magazine.

Considered to be one of the most important contemporary designers in Europe, Mendini's work places an emphasis on cultural diversity and radical expression. He has also produced many collective projects, such as the museum in Groningen, Netherlands, built with Philippe Starck, Frank Stella, and Michele de Lucchi.
