Christophe Pourny
ID: 13275
Видавництво: Artisan

Christophe Pourny learned the art of furniture restoration in his father’s atelier in the South of France. In this, his first book, he teaches readers everything they need to know about the provenance and history of furniture, as well as how to restore, update, and care for their furniture — from antiques to midcentury pieces, family heirlooms or funky flea-market finds. The heart of the book is an overview of Pourny’s favorite techniques — ceruse, vernis anglais, and water gilding, among many others — with full-color step-by-step photographs to ensure that readers can easily replicate each refinishing technique at home. Pourny brings these techniques to life with a chapter devoted to real-world refinishing projects, from a veneered table to an ebonized desk, a gilt frame to a painted northern European hutch. Rounding out this comprehensive guide is care and maintenance information, including how to properly clean leather, polish hardware, fix a broken leg, and replace felt pads, as well as recipes to make your own wax, shellac, varnish, stain, and more.

About the Author:

Christophe Pournyis one of the most esteemed furniture restorers in the business. Top decorators like Bunny Williams trust him to regild Louis XVI bergères and refresh the luster on French-polished 18th-century dining tables. Today, Pourny is the unofficial restorer to the City of New York and counts Uma Thurman and Martha Stewart among his celebrated clients. He frequently appears in top shelter publications, and his handcrafted furniture tonics are sold nationwide.

The International Interior Design Exhibition (iide) came to Brussels with heritage.  First launched in London by Fleur Rossdale as The British Interior Design Exhibition (BIDE) during the 1980's and 1990's, the event was highly acclaimed as a ground breaking showcase for the design industry.  With 30,000 international visitors to each, the exhibition helped propel interior design into the limelight, receiving worldwide press coverage and an insatiable demographic of private clients, hoteliers, designers and developers.  Fleur says ‘Good design has a vital role to play in our everyday lives.  It can improve how we live and function, be it at home, in the workplace, in education or on holiday.  Interiors set a mood, portraying an identity that should feel enhancing and harmonious.’  Fleur, an active interior designer herself, chose Brussels for the re-launch due to the cultural heritage, not least as founders of the Art Nouveau movement. 'Decoration is all about bringing together skilled workmanship, colour, texture and fine art to create a melodious interior to enhance our everyday lives', she says.

Fleur received much fan mail from visitors in the early days, in particular praising how they found a particular design style they related to, previously unknown to them.

IIDE follows the ethos of past experience.  Showcasing Belgian and international designers, presenting their interior design vision which inspired private and trade visitors in November 2018 and in September 2019 at Tour & Taxis Brussels:

Text by Mario Piazza and Maria Giulia Zunino, Illustrated by Pierluigi Longo
ID: 16321
Видавництво: Rizzoli

This is the first book of its kind devoted to the history of Estel, celebrating eighty years of the furniture manufacturer's activity.

This book takes the reader through Estel's history from the future to the past, working backward in five major phases of the company's progress. These phases are related through various illustrations, best called "dioramas," covering double spreads that fold out, making four full-size pages.

Especially created for the book by Pierluigi Longo, these "dioramas" emerge like modern-day frescoes in which the leading figures of the business world can be observed, along with the production panorama and market environment around them. They represent a sort of visualized concept that not only illustrates and tracks a path through the book, but also lends it concept and structure.

The texts that follow each theme-diorama pivot successively on the company philosophy, the protagonists, the products, and a brief text classifying the furniture-manufacturing sector itself. Hence, the tale unfolds on two fronts simultaneously, interweaving the company's history with the ongoing developments in the sector and in methods of production.

About the Authors:

Mario Piazza is one of Italy's leading graphic designers. Maria Giulia Zunino is a journalist who writes on questions of production and design. Pierluigi Longo is an illustrator whose work is featured in leading Italian publications.

Enchanting watercolors from the art of design

In the rank of great Danish designers, Finn Juhl (1912–1989) is mentioned in the same breath with Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen. He became particularly well known for his sculptural, seemingly organic tables, chairs, and sofas. However, the complex interior designs he developed in the forties and fifties were also enormously successful. These include the Danish Embassy in Washington, D. C., or the conference room of the United Nations Trusteeship Council in New York. Only the most adept would be aware of the fact that Finn Juhl was also a talented watercolor painter. For the first time, this publication allows readers to take a unique look at the designer’s working method. More than 125 subtle works on paper communicate the ingenuity of their creator: Finn Juhl’s furniture classics, living concepts, and interior designs can finally be experienced in all their complexity, as one can trace their development from the beginning onwards.

Charlotte Fiell, Peter Fiell
ID: 3318
Видавництво: Taschen

More than any other piece of furniture, the chair has been subjected to the wildest dreams of the designers. The particular curve of a back-rest, or the twist of a leg, the angle of a seat or the colour of the entire artefact all reflect the stylistic consciousness of each era.

From Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto via Verner Panton to Eva Zeisel; from Art Nouveau to International Style, from Pop Art to Postmodernism, the phenomenon of the chair is so complex that it requires a reference work as comprehensive as this to do it full justice. They are all here: Thonet's bentwood chairs and Hoffmann's sitting-machines, Marcel Breuer's Wassily chair and Ron Arad's avant-garde armchairs.

The book, a slightly abbreviated version of our classic title 1000 Chairs, devotes one page to each chair, displayed on its own as pure form, with biographical and historical information about the chairs and their designers. A special treat for anyone who loves design and a must for collectors!

The pieces in this book have passed through the hands of one of Britain's leading furniture dealers, Norman Adams

The book contains some 475 black and white and 56 colour photographs, accompanied by detailed and informative captions. The illustration of so many fine pieces, as well as unusual items, superbly photographed, would in itself have earned this book a place on the shelves of anyone seriously interested in the subject. But there is an added bonus. A firm like Norman Adams prospers by the skill of the selection in buying - a 'good eye' - and it is this essential facility, succinctly expressed in the captions to the pieces in this book, which will ensure its lasting reputation as an important work of reference.

This exhibition catalogue shows the evolution of taste in the Italian and European courts from late mannerism through to the first decades of last century. Writing desks, tables, beds, chairs, thrones, mirrors, vases, and objects made of or decorated with precious materials, such as gold, silver, semiprecious stones, or mother of pearl are reproduced in the book. Detailed captions assist the reader in understanding and appreciating the technical craftsmanship of engravers, cabinet makers, bronze workers, as well as the creative genius of architects, such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Filippo Juvarra, and Pelagio Pelagi, at the service of the courts. A volume that collectors, scholars, and enthusiasts of the decorative arts cannot miss, it’s an essential book for anyone interested in the evolution of aesthetics and style through the ages.

About the Author:

Enrico Colle is professor of the History of Decorative Arts at the University of Bologna, and an expert on Italian furniture and interiors.

For bibliophiles, connoisseurs of contemporary printmaking, and everyone whose imagination is fired by the macabre

With breathtaking virtuosity and a unique, dreamlike vision, Érik Desmazières – a master of contemporary printmaking – re-creates interiors, cityscapes and fantastical compositions.

For this book - the first to include the artist's rare work in colour - Desmazières has delved deep into the arcane theme of cabinets of curiosities. Taking as his starting point the melancholy musings of the seventeenth-century antiquary Sir Thomas Browne, he has reinterpreted these shadowy collections of the recondite, rare and bizarre – precious corals, shrunken heads and magical artefacts – as a series of meditations on the vanity of earthly life. Death and decay are never far below the surface, as a depiction of Sir Thomas Browne’s own skull, disinterred and displayed in a museum until the 1920s, reminds us.

The erudite text by Patrick Mauriès traces the preoccupations of Browne and his fellow collectors through history, showing how abstruse objects and spectres of death - subject matter once considered the preserve of specialists - have now entered the cultural mainstream.

Rich in atmosphere, refreshingly strange and exquisitely produced, A Cabinet of Rarities is a bibliophilic treasure for anyone whose imagination is fired by the esoteric and macabre.

Minimum Design: An indispensable compendium on important designers of the modern era
An ideal and accessible introduction suitable for students and lovers of design today

Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) and Achille (1918-2002) are the eldest and the youngest of the three Castiglioni brothers who all studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. The two Castiglioni brothers were interested in both technology and art and in the 1940s began their original professional partnership, "Castiglioni Brothers". The company was especially successful with their lamps for Arredoluce, Flos, and Artemide. The brothers worked from the viewpoint that design must restructure an object's function, form and production process, a philosophy they applied to every work they produced.

Published in the same style as the successful Minimum Architects series, the Minimum Design series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind them to be discovered. These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarising the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

He has also produced many collective projects, such as the museum in Groningen, Netherlands, built with Philippe Starck, Frank Stella, and Michele de Lucchi. He has also worked with important Italian and foreign firms such as Zanotta, Alessi, Swatch, Philips, Venini, Bisazza and Cartier.

Published in the same style as the successful Minimum Architects series, the Minimum Design series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. Chapters cover Jacobean and William and Mary styles, Queen Anne, Chippendale, Classical Period, and Early Victorian furniture. Miss Comstock gives the historical background of each period and style, describes the known craftsmen, and illustrates each innovation in design. Photographs include famous and less well-known examples representing the height of American achievement in furniture making. Every piece illustrated is described in full with its history, style, region, the kind of wood used, and probable date. The book features over 700 illustrations of individual pieces of furniture and whole rooms from houses of noted collectors and from house museums showing authentic settings in which these pieces were used. Readers will also be delighted with the photographs which show details of carvings and turnings and with the paintings of the period which depict modes of dress, frequently an influencing factor on furniture design.

The Metropolitan Museum’s preeminent collection of early colonial furniture is expertly documented in this long-awaited publication. It covers the full spectrum of furniture forms made during the 17th and early 18th centuries - from chairs and other seating to tables, boxes, various types of chests and cupboards, and desks.  Each of the 141 objects is thoroughly described with detailed information on provenance, construction, condition, inscriptions, dimensions, and materials.  Photographed anew in color for this volume, each piece is explicated in terms of the styles and craftsmanship of the period and is evaluated in light of comparative pieces in public and private collections throughout the country. One appendix contains photographic details of construction and decorative elements, and another has drawings of joints and moldings.
