Alessandro Mendini, born in Milan in 1931, is a major theorist and a driving force behind avant-garde design in Italy. Aside from his artistic career, he was also editor of the architecture magazines Casabella and Modo and publisher of the famous Domus magazine.

Considered to be one of the most important contemporary designers in Europe, Mendini's work places an emphasis on cultural diversity and radical expression. He has also produced many collective projects, such as the museum in Groningen, Netherlands, built with Philippe Starck, Frank Stella, and Michele de Lucchi. He has also worked with important Italian and foreign firms such as Zanotta, Alessi, Swatch, Philips, Venini, Bisazza and Cartier.

Before his death in 1954, Joseph Downs was director of the Winterthur Museum, in Delaware, and curator of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for nearly twenty years.

Charles F. Montgomery (1910-1978) worked at the Winterthur Museum, in Delaware, from 1949 to 1970, as director and senior research fellow devoted to early American culture. From 1970 until his death, he was curator of American art collections and professor of art history at Yale University.

Western-style furniture was a relatively late arrival in Asia, where climates and lifestyles were markedly different from those in Europe. But furniture design in Asia quickly blossomed into a major decorative art.

Each of the countries covered here – China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Tibet and the Philippines – developed its own particular designs, creating pieces of furniture as works of art. Today these are treasured by collectors worldwide, as well as in the countries where they originated.
