In 1957, Eugene Smith, a thirty-eight-year-old magazine photographer, walked out of his comfortable settled world - his longtime well-paying job at Life and the home he shared with his wife and four children in Croton-on-Hudson, New York - to move into a dilapidated, five-story loft building at 821 Sixth Avenue (between Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth streets) in New York City’s wholesale flower district. Smith was trying to complete the most ambitious project of his life, a massive photo-essay on the city of Pittsburgh.

821 Sixth Avenue was a late-night haunt of musicians, including some of the biggest names in jazz - Charles Mingus, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk among them - and countless fascinating, underground characters. As his ambitions broke down for his quixotic Pittsburgh opus, Smith found solace in the chaotic, somnambulistic world of the loft and its artists. He turned his documentary impulses away from Pittsburgh and toward his offbeat new surroundings.

From 1957 to 1965, Smith exposed 1,447 rolls of film at his loft, making roughly 40,000 pictures, the largest body of work in his career, photographing the nocturnal jazz scene as well as life on the streets of the flower district, as seen from his fourth-floor window. He wired the building like a surreptitious recording studio and made 1,740 reels (4,000 hours) of stereo and mono audiotapes, capturing more than 300 musicians, among them Roy Haynes, Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Roland Kirk, Alice Coltrane, Don Cherry, and Paul Bley. He recorded, as well, legends such as pianists Eddie Costa, and Sonny Clark, drummers Ronnie Free and Edgar Bateman, saxophonist Lin Halliday, bassist Henry Grimes, and multi-instrumentalist Eddie Listengart.

Also dropping in on the nighttime scene were the likes of Doris Duke, Norman Mailer, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Salvador Dalí, as well as pimps, prostitutes, drug addicts, thieves, photography students, local cops, building inspectors, marijuana dealers, and others.

Sam Stephenson discovered Smith’s jazz loft photographs and tapes eleven years ago and has spent the last seven years cataloging, archiving, selecting, and editing Smith’s materials for this book, as well as writing its introduction and the text interwoven throughout.

W. Eugene Smith’s Jazz Loft Project has been legendary in the worlds of art, photography, and music for more than forty years, but until the publication of The Jazz Loft Project, no one had seen Smith’s extraordinary photographs or read any of the firsthand accounts of those who were there and lived to tell the tale(s) . . .

Trains have always been the only truly cultivated way to travel. Today, in the age of budget airlines, never-ending security controls, and sustainability issues, this is truer than ever before. The slower rhythm from departure to arrival, the relaxed glide through the landscape, and the shift between city and country fill rail enthusiasts with great joy and are pleasures waiting to be discovered by the uninitiated.

The Journey presents a varied selection of extraordinary travel opportunities by train from around the world. The reader is invited aboard modern high-speed trains, spectacular panoramic railways, dining carriages, and elegant compartments of historic luxury trains. The book presents the exteriors and interiors of these different trains, their routes, and their defining character. It takes the reader on a journey to breathtaking canyons and romantic landscapes, recounts adventurous travel reports, and describes the history and current developments of well-known trains, including the Venice Simplon Orient Express, the Glacier Express, the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the El Transcantabrico. The virtuoso images of one of the most in-demand fashion photographer, now assembled in one volume for the first time

How can a photographer of internationally known stars create iconic portraits that linger in the memory — especially since these actors have already been photographed and filmed millions of times? Vincent Peters — who has been working since 1995 for magazines such as Vogue and GQ and fashion brands including Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Yves Saint Laurent — relies entirely on the classic art of portrait photography for his pictures.

Focusing on small gestures and subtle productions instead of prominent poses, he ensures that his subjects do not disappear into the backdrop and that their faces are the focal point. Emma Watson’s features are lent a tragic note with white makeup.

Photographs of stars such as David Beckham and Christian Bale are markedly masculine. Even more intimate are the images that Peters has taken in private surroundings, like when he accompanied Monica Bellucci during the years. His sophisticated lighting has the most impact in his black-and-white photos, bestowing them with a breathtaking cinematic quality.

- Sensitive portraits of international stars including Kim Basinger, Cameron Diaz, Scarlett Johansson, John Malkovich, Charlize Theron, and many others

Julie Zerbo пишет:

To coincide with the release of his book, Little Black Jacket: Chanel's Classic Revisited, Karl Lagerfeld is putting the pages of the book on display. In late March, the exhibit opened in Tokyo. Then for eight days, the exhibit was housed at New York’s Swiss Institute. Its next destination is Taipei, China, and after that, even more, cities, which have not yet been announced. The book features 113 images of industry tastemakers from Coco Chanel herself, Anna Wintour, Yoko Ono, Daphne Guinness, designer Olivier Theyskens, wild child model Alice Dellal, models Aymeline Valade and Mariacarla Boscono, and more. All of the subjects wore similar iconic black Chanel jackets but were styled by ex-editor in chief of French Vogue, Carine Roitfeld, to reflect their own personalities. For instance: Alice Dellal, wore her jacket under a studded leather vest; designer, Alexander Wang, wore his in addition to his usual all-black ensemble; Daphne Guinness wore hers while dripping in diamonds; Jane Birkin wore hers while holding, what else? An Hermes Birkin bag.

The exhibit itself consisted of more than 100 black and white photos lining four walls. In addition, there were several larger images that were colour tinted. These included photos of actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who wears the jacket as a headpiece), and Georgia May Jagger, who wore her jacket open over a black bra, among others. However, the most striking images were the two enormous side by side photos: one of classic Coco and the other of Anna Wintour's torso from behind, who's perfect bob haircut was a dead giveaway.

The one person missing from the photos: Karl, himself. Of his absence, he said: “I’m able to say to those who ask why they weren’t asked to be in it, ‘I am not in it, either.’”

With an excellent eye for unusual structures and colors, Wettke invigorates our imagination and shows us that the desert is a place of unexpected variety. For photography buffs, Africa lovers, and everyone who finds joy in the beauty of nature

About the Author:

Jürgen Wettke was born in 1953 in Hagen, Germany. In addition to his successful career as a leader in one of the largest corporate consulting firms, he has been a passionate photographer since he was a boy. He wants his work to touch the viewer emotionally and raise awareness of how fragile our planet’s ecosystems are. His first photo book, The Art of the Wadden Sea, published by teNeues in 2013, was a resounding success: exhibits in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Kampen (Sylt) and Salzburg marked its debut, with extensive press coverage as well. With the Wadden Sea and the Namib Desert, Jürgen Wettke has found motifs that are constantly changing due to the forces of nature. His photographs are notable not only for their aesthetic qualities, which make them highly desirable collector’s items, but also for the sheer uniqueness of each and every shot.

In 2007 TASCHEN released The New Erotic Photography, followed in 2012 by The New Erotic Photography 2.

Each book featured hundreds of fresh and provocative images from the world’s most intriguing erotic talents. Now the best of both books is available in The New Erotic Photography, featuring 62 photographers from 10 countries, exploring the global variations of erotic photography, as well as the evolution of photographic media over the last decade. We see film give way to digital, while those who persist with film are as likely to use Polaroids and primitive cameras like the Lomo and Holga as traditional SLRs.

The featured photographers include new names Gregory Bojorquez, Jo Schwab, Tomohide Ikeya, Frédéric Fontenoy, Andrew Pashis, and Jan Hronsky, as well as established artists Guido Argentini, Bruno Bisang, Eric Kroll, and the late Bob Carlos Clarke. Several outstanding women are also featured in this edition, including erotic film star Kimberly Kane, digital pioneer Natacha Merritt, heavy metal skateboarder Magdalena Wosinska, self-portraitist Jody Frost, and cover artist April-lea Hutchinson. It all adds up to an awful lot of nudes for a tantalizingly low price.
