Decades after the movement globalized, New York is still the mecca of graffiti culture. Painting there is a badge of honor, with graffiti artists from around the globe making pilgrimages to New York for that purpose. This is the city where it all began, yet few know the back story.
Graffiti New York fills that gap, detailing the concepts, aesthetics, ideals, and social structures that have served as a cultural blueprint for graffiti movements across the world. The book features approximately 1,000 images, complemented by texts by the authors and relevant players in the movement, as well as descriptive graphics and sidebars.
Ranging from the birth of simple signature tags to today’s vibrant murals, and covering the ups and downs of the movement, the culture’s value system, its social framework, the various forms of graffiti, and significant artists and crews, Graffiti New York is a major addition to Abrams' superb books on graffiti art.

Graffiti artists in Paris, much like in New York and Los Angeles, have transformed urban spaces - sidewalks, metro stations, staircases, abandoned buildings - into showrooms that exhibit their work in all of its many mediums, from a proliferation of stickers to cleverly applied stencils to giant murals. In Graffiti Paris, Fabienne Grévy takes readers on a tour of Paris’s street art, and also discusses the variety of unique sources that inspire the artists, including the cave paintings at Lascaux, nineteenth-century Japanese blockprints, and comics.

From the kitsch cuteness of the ubiquitous Hello Kitty to the cult of manga and anime, Japanese design has long paved the way for the West to follow. Graphic Japan goes beyond this well-known territory to reveal the myriad styles of design produced in Japan today, from packaging to posters, typography to new media. Contemporary Japanese graphic design is a unique collision of traditional cultural influences and a focused thrust towards modernisation on global terms. No other country has found itself modernised so quickly while retaining such a distinct way of life, and the resulting graphic innovation enthralls the world. Divided into distinct sections, the book reflects the marriage of tradition and hyper-modernity that typifies Japanese design. Essays on today’s innovators are beautifully printed in a simple, elegant manner typical of traditional Japanese work, while visual matter is boldly, colourfully printed, reflecting the brash, global commerciality of much new material.

The Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London in 1851 was the first of a series of international exhibitions that have continued, in one form or another, to the present day. The content of these exhibitions gave nations and individual companies of the world the opportunity to display their specialised skills and present new ideas and products to a much wider public.

In this book, Jonathan Meyer looks at major international exhibitions held during the nineteenth century and focuses on the important changes taking place at this time, in both society and design. He examines the enormous impact of the Industrial Revolution and how it came to influence the decorative arts, through changes in machinery and scientific methods.

This book contains a wide-ranging and striking collection of illustrations, mostly from contemporary sources, providing the reader with a very good idea of the exceptionally high quality of inventiveness and workmanship displayed by the manufacturers and their exhibits. Examples discussed and illustrated cover most areas of manufacture and include ceramics; silver and metalwork; furniture; cast iron and garden furniture; chandeliers and candelabra; clocks; bronze ornament; textiles; chimney-pieces and interior design.

The creation of this important and lavishly illustrated book involved gathering material from all the major museums in Russia and abroad, as well as from public and private archives. It is a remembrance of things past and a testimonial to a great cultural and historic heritage. It is a book to fascinate anybody interested in art, collecting or Russian history.

Imperial Russia before the 1917 Revolution had a great tradition of private collecting. In this book, the authors reconstruct a tour of the great Russian collections as they would have been just prior to the fall of the Romanovs. The collections are brought back to life by watercolours and drawings of their palaces, as well as photographs of interiors, family portraits and, naturally, by the works of art that they collected, now all in Russian museums or museums abroad.

Later, among the tycoons created during the Industrial Revolution, were Pavel Tretyakov, whose gallery is now one of the most visited in Russia, and the Shchukin and Morozov families, who collected Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and all the Impressionists including Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cézanne and Gauguin.

The 18th century`s Neoclassicist movement, with its white marble sculptures inspired by the art of the ancient world, has helped Greek art to remain vivid in our memories even today. But the reality of ancient art was entirely different, as surfaces were in fact much more brut. As author Michael Siebler points out, recent findings have revealed that the seemingly perfect bodies of statues and sculptures were very often painted in flamboyant colors and ornaments. Thus ancient Greek art combined a high level of classical identity with an equal amount of sensuality. Despite being viewed in a new light, the beauty of the works of art persists.

Including detailed analyses of the following works: Alexander-sarcophagus; Lysippos: Apoxyomenos; Exekias: Amphora; Myron: Diskobol; Apoll from Belvedere; Laocoon; Nike from Samothrake; the altar from Pergamon, now in Berlin; the Alexander-mosaic in Naples; Harmodios and Aristogeiton, in Naples; Polyklet: Doryphoros; sculptures from the Alphaia-temple, now in Munich; Andokides: Amphora; Ptolemaier-Cameo in Vienna; Praxiteles: Hermes; Apollo from the Zeus-temple in Olympia; numerous sculptures in Athens; Euphronios: Krater, now in New York; some Elgin Marbles in London; the warrior from Riace, now in Reggio.

Beautiful photographs of painted vases from ancient Greece, with depictions of famous myths or scenes from everyday life
Latest title in Scala's series of official guides to Berlin museum collections, following Pergamon Museum and Gemäldegalerie Berlin

Greek vases are a vital source of information on mythology and society in ancient Greece. These painted clay vessels played a variety of roles in daily life and religious ritual, and the pictures and patterns on them provide a key to understanding these roles.

The Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) in Berlin stretches back more than 300 years, and vase paintings illustrating well-known myths and sagas have long been a key field of interest. Today, the Berlin collection ranks alongside those of the British Museum, the Louvre, the Hermitage and the Metropolitan Museum as one of the largest and most diverse of its kind.

Co-published with Ernst Wasmuth Verlag, this lavishly illustrated new book is the first to focus exclusively on the Antikensammlung's Greek vases. The authors, who are distinguished specialists on the collection, have selected 62 of its finest works and provided an expert commentary.
