About the Author
Victor Arwas is an acknowledged authority on the fine and decorative arts of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In over twenty published books he has explored aspects of various movements, and written exhibition catalogues and monographs on individual artists and groups. Several of his books are the standard works on their subject. He is a lifelong collector of paintings, graphics, books, sculpture and objets d'art, and has exhibited and promoted exhibitions at his Editions Graphiques gallery in London as well as in Japan and the United States. He lectures and broadcasts widely.

In this fascinating book, art historian James Hamilton examines the work and life of the illustrator Arthur Rackham.

Rackham’s illustrations for works such as Rip Van Winkle, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, Alice in Wonderland and A Midsummer Night’s Dream have attained the classic status of the writings themselves – indeed, in some cases, they have become synonymous with them. Rackham himself, however, has previously remained a shadowy figure.

As well as featuring exquisite illustrations and sketches, extracts from Rackham’s correspondence and insightful commentary from James Hamilton shed new light on this much-collected illustrator.

About the Author:

James Hamilton is Curator at the University of Birmingham, and has worked at the Ulster Museum, Belfast, Portsmouth and Wakefield City Art Galleries, the Mappin Art Gallery in Sheffield and as a Director of the Yorkshire Contemporary Art Group. He organised a seminal Arthur Rackham exhibition at Sheffield, Bristol and the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1979/80 and has written biographies of J. M. W. Turner and William Heath Robinson.

Arthur Rackham was a Victorian-born illustrator and artist who influenced much of the book and commercial illustration of the first half of the 20th Century. 

The impish detail of his hundreds of drawings brought humour and dark detail to the fairy stories and classic tales which were popular at the time, from Washington Irving to the Brothers Grimm, Peter Pan to his exquisite work on the Alice in Wonderland. The author:
Luigi Ficacci studied Art History in Rome under Giulio Carlo Argan. He is curator at the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome and lectures at different Italian universities. The focal points of his research work are the issues raised by 17th and 18th century and contemporary Italian art.

The present publication is dedicated to the expressive self-portraits by Jean-Michel Basquiat and covers his lifelong intensive study of the self. In Basquiat’s œuvre the self-portrait, one of the major subjects of art history, occupies a central position that has not been examined to date.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s self-portraits are regarded as being among the most important of his radical creative works. In addition to some 50 specific portraits of himself, we can also see his series of likenesses of African-American men as concealed reproductions of the artist. Max Beckmann (1884-1950) found his central theme in the loneliness of twentieth-century man, threatened by catastrophe and torn between materialism and freedom of mind and spirit. The editor

Rainer Metzger studied art history, history, and German literature in Munich and Augsburg. In 1994, he earned his Ph.D. on the subject of Dan Graham, and subsequently worked as a fine arts journalist for the Viennese newspaper Der Standard. He has written numerous books on art, including volumes on van Gogh and Chagall. Since 2004, he has worked as Professor of art history at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe.

Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916) transformed the natural world into dark visions and strange fantasies. He created a universe of mysterious hybrid creatures, offered his own interpretations of literary, biblical and mythological subjects, and presented flowers in a singular way. The art of Boris Vallejo is characterised by beautiful maidens, heroic men and fearsome monsters while the work of his wife Julie Bell is famous for a sense of colour and dramatic composition which puts her paintings in a class by themselves.
