Rarely has a subject been served by a book of this stature. Five years in the making, it covers all aspects of Art Nouveau in France in 624 authoritative pages and 740 illustrations, mostly in colour. Arwas traces the evolution of the movement as it developed, primarily in Nancy and Paris, with the help of carefully chosen illustrations, many never published before. Ranging from the 1900 Paris Exhibition to Paintings, Graphics and Posters and such collecting fields as Furniture, Jewellery, Glass, Ceramics, Book Bindings and Sculpture, the informative, witty text ranges over Architecture, Haute Couture, and the role of Women in Art Nouveau with a particular look at such Theatrical Ikons as Sarah Bernhardt, Loïe Fuller and the Grandes Horizontales. Art Nouveau achieved its national and international diffusion when it reached Paris, taking its name from the Parisian gallery of Siegfried Bing. The Metro entrances and buildings of Hector Guimard are still witness to its brief but extraordinary heyday in the capital, where the concentrated vituperation with which it was greeted helped propagate it as critics, aesthetes and the purchasing public took opposing sides. Reproduced here are rare examples of the great glass of Gallée and Daum; the stunning jewellery of Lalique, Vever and Fouquet; breathtakingly beautiful bronzes; complex polychrome ceramics; magnificent posters, decorative panels and paintings by Mucha, Berthon and Grasset; and book bindings, silver, pewter, walking sticks, and many other collectible objects that bring to life one of the most creative and exciting periods in the history of design. Destined to become the standard book on the subject, both content and design will appeal widely to the connoisseur, the specialist and the collector as well as to the novice who will be introduced to the magical wonders of the style. Detailed biographies of the artists featured, translations of contemporary texts and the bibliography lead to a full understanding of the period.

In this fascinating book, art historian James Hamilton examines the work and life of the illustrator Arthur Rackham.

Rackham’s illustrations for works such as Rip Van WinklePeter Pan in Kensington GardensAlice in Wonderland and A Midsummer Night’s Dream have attained the classic status of the writings themselves – indeed, in some cases, they have become synonymous with them. Rackham himself, however, has previously remained a shadowy figure.

As well as featuring exquisite illustrations and sketches, extracts from Rackham’s correspondence and insightful commentary from James Hamilton shed new light on this much-collected illustrator.

About the Author:

James Hamilton is Curator at the University of Birmingham, and has worked at the Ulster Museum, Belfast, Portsmouth and Wakefield City Art Galleries, the Mappin Art Gallery in Sheffield and as a Director of the Yorkshire Contemporary Art Group. He organised a seminal Arthur Rackham exhibition at Sheffield, Bristol and the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1979/80 and has written biographies of J. M. W. Turner and William Heath Robinson.

- A fascinating insight into the personality, career and work of one of the world’s most collectable illustrators
- Filled with enchanting pictures and authoritative text

Arthur Rackham was a Victorian-born illustrator and artist who influenced much of the book and commercial illustration of the first half of the 20th Century.

The impish detail of his hundreds of drawings brought humour and dark detail to the fairy stories and classic tales which were popular at the time, from Washington Irving to the Brothers Grimm, Peter Pan to his exquisite work on the Alice in Wonderland. His water-colour work and the graceful power of his ink and line work influenced the Golden Age illustrators of the 1920s, through to the pulps of Weird Tales, and the comic books of today.

Arthur Rackham: Masterpieces of Art is a celebration of this industrious and lively artist.

Francis Bacon (1909-1992) possessed the rare ability to transform unconscious compulsions into figurative, human-like forms that seem to evoke the raw emotions that bore them. Mixing realism and abstraction, Bacon delves deep beneath the surfaces of things, opening up the human body to reveal the chaos that lies within and struggling with all that is inexplicable. Erotic and grotesquely beautiful is the work of this legendary painter whose haunting, distorted figures have inspired entire generations of painters who seek to emulate his highly original style.

The author:
Luigi Ficacci studied Art History in Rome under Giulio Carlo Argan. He is curator at the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome and lectures at different Italian universities. The focal points of his research work are the issues raised by 17th and 18th century and contemporary Italian art.

The outsider inside. From the streets to the galleries: the artist who turned the institution upside down

From the streets of New York to the walls of its most prominent galleries, young graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was catapulted to international fame in his early 20s and died of a drug overdose at 27. The subject of a feature film by fellow artist Julian Schnabel, Basquiat is one of the most admired artists to emerge from the 1980s art boom. This book explores his short but prolific career.

The present publication is dedicated to the expressive self-portraits by Jean-Michel Basquiat and covers his lifelong intensive study of the self. In Basquiat’s œuvre the self-portrait, one of the major subjects of art history, occupies a central position that has not been examined to date.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s self-portraits are regarded as being among the most important of his radical creative works. In addition to some 50 specific portraits of himself, we can also see his series of likenesses of African-American men as concealed reproductions of the artist. Not least because Basquiat, who was affected himself by everyday racism, identified with his heroes, saints and martyrs as he portrayed them. Thus his major topics from identity, discrimination and prejudice to capitalism, the market and oppression are all to be found in these key works.

Basquiat first came to prominence when he collaborated with Al Diaz to spray-paint enigmatic statements under the pseudonym SAMO©. He went on to work on collages, Xerox art, postcards, performances, and music before establishing his reputation as one of the most important painters of his generation.

Accompanying a major exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery, this book opens with introductory essays from the curators, which place his practice in a wider art historical context and look at his career through the lens of performance. Six thematic chapters offer new research, with essays from poet Christian Campbell on SAMO©; curator Carlo McCormick on New York / New Wave; writer Glenn O’Brien on the downtown scene; academic Jordana Moore Saggese on Basquiat’s relationship to film and television; and music scholar Francesco Martinelli on Basquiat’s obsession with jazz.

This insightful new survey also features extended captions, rare archival material, and extensive photography, demonstrating how Basquiat’s legacy remains more powerful and relevant than ever today.

Max Beckmann (1884-1950) found his central theme in the loneliness of twentieth-century man, threatened by catastrophe and torn between materialism and freedom of mind and spirit. His early pictures showed the influence of Impressionism, with a preponderance of biblical, historical, and allegorical themes. The first world war made a deep impression on him: somewhere between Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), the succinct forms and hard contours in his memorable paintings and graphic works showed man at the limit of physical and mental endurance. Later, the harshness and severity of his style softened and his colours became more radiant, but the monumentality remained. Theatre, circus, and music hall became parables of human existence. Beckmann's work is concerned with the fundamental conditions of human existence and the tragic entanglement of the human being dependant on the whims of gods, sexuality, and society. His relentless search for knowledge, his uncompromising commitment to the picture, and his belief in the power of its form and color give his work its distinctive, fascinating character, and have earned him a high-ranking place among the artists of the twentieth century.

Zeitgeist. The roaring twenties in Berlin

It was the decade of daring Expressionist canvases, the Bauhaus total work of art, drag balls, Metropolis, and Marlene Dietrich. From cutting-edge kino to crowded jazz bars, come and roam the daring, freewheeling spirit of 1920s Berlin with this vivid cultural portrait of the age through painting, design, fashion, film, and more.

It was the decade of daring Expressionist canvases, of brilliant book design, of the Bauhaus total work of art, of pioneering psychology, of drag balls, cabaret, Metropolis, and Marlene Dietrich’s rising star in theater and silent film. Between the paroxysms of two world wars, Berlin in the 1920s was a carpe diem cultural heyday, replete with groundbreaking art, invention, and thought.

This book immerses readers in the freewheeling spirit of Berlin’s Weimar age. Through exemplary works in painting, sculpture, architecture, graphic design, photography, and film, we uncover the innovations, ideas, and precious dreams that characterized this unique cultural window. We take in the jazz bars and dance halls; the crowded kinos and flapper fashion; the advances in technology and transport; the radio towers and rumbling trams and trains; the soaring buildings; the cinematic masterworks; and the newly independent women who smoked cigarettes, wore their hair short, and earned their own money.

Featured works in this vivid cultural portrait include Hannah Höch's The Journalists; Lotte Jacobi’s Hands on Typewriter; Otto Dix's Portrait of the Journalist Sylvia von Harden; Peter Behrens's project of the Alexanderplatz; and Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel, starring Dietrich as cabaret performer Lola Lola. Along the way, we explore both the utopian yearnings and the more ominous economic and political realities which fueled the era's escapist, idealistic, or reactionary masterworks. Behind the bright lights and glitter dresses, we see the inflation, factory labor, and fragile political consensus that lurked beneath this golden era and would eventually spell its savage end with the rise of National Socialism.

Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916) transformed the natural world into dark visions and strange fantasies. He created a universe of mysterious hybrid creatures, offered his own interpretations of literary, biblical and mythological subjects, and presented flowers in a singular way. This book presents the full range of Redon’s achievements - mysterious charcoal "noirs," luminous pastels, richly textured canvases, dramatically shaded lithographs - through the Museum's unparalleled collection of the artist's work. The publication includes essays on the artist's aesthetic strategies, the meanings of his monsters, his accomplishments as a printmaker, and a comprehensive catalogue.

Includes 459 illustrations, 152 in color.

The art of Boris Vallejo is characterised by beautiful maidens, heroic men and fearsome monsters while the work of his wife Julie Bell is famous for a sense of colour and dramatic composition which puts her paintings in a class by themselves.

As two of the most acclaimed fantasy artists working today, Boris and Julie have produced art for album covers, trading cards, posters and calendars for (in Boris’ case) 30 years – as well as having 15 books of their work published under the Paper Tiger imprint.

This book is a collection of all their greatest pieces throughout their careers, while also including some unseen new work. The book is arranged chronologically and divided into three main sections: early, middle and recent art. A narrative accompanies the paintings with captions for many of the pieces. The pages are also punctuated by quotes from Boris and Julie’s peers in the fantasy art field and fans of their work, who pay homage to their art and comment on how their work has inspired them to become better artists.

Between heaven and hell. Hieronymus Bosch’s meticulous visions of the grotesque, debauched, and divine

As cryptic as they are compelling, the masterpieces of Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) remain some of the most enduring enigmas of the art world. Their intricate, allegorical, and often startling content has captivated not only art historians, but also fashion designers, rock stars, writers, and punk rockers, as well as countless modern and contemporary artist successors.

Although rooted in the Old Netherlandish tradition, Bosch developed a highly subjective, richly suggestive style to render both the celestial bliss of heaven and the grotesque tortures of hell, most famously and meticulously excecuted in The Garden of Earthly Delights. Here, as in his other known works, his artistic language combined religious humility with a razor-sharp wit, often playing off pictorial versions of contemporary proverbs or figures of speech.

This book ties together the elusive threads of Bosch’s oeuvre to provide a concise introduction to an at once haunting and enthralling pictorial world.

Hieronymus Bosch (1450–1516) is, without any doubt, one of the most famous artists in the history of Netherlandish painting

This book explores his best-known paintings and drawings, showing them as never before in stunning, full-page details. It is organized by characteristic themes in Bosch’s work, such as faces, heaven and hell, the four elements, landscapes, and creatures both fantastic and monstrous. Readers are treated to an exceptional view of masterpieces like The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Haywain Triptych, The Temptation of St Anthony and The Seven Deadly Sins.

Till-Holger Borchert, Director of the Bruges Museums and an expert on Netherlandish art, guides us through the painter’s oeuvre in clear and accessible language, and from less familiar and surprising angles.
