Masterpieces of Russian Stage Design 1880-1930 examines the Lobanov-Rostovsky collection of stage design, in turn outlining the history of modern Russian art: one of the most important interludes within the cultural renaissance of the early twentieth century. Unique in size, scope, and composition, the collection is unequalled; artists include celebrities such as Bakst, Benois, Goncharova, Larionov, Malevich, Popova, Rodchenko, and Tatlin as well as less familiar names such as Anisfeld, Lissim, Remisoff, and Soudeikine.

From Neo-Nationalism and Symbolism through Cubo-Futurism and Suprematism to Constructivism and Socialist Realism, Masterpieces of Russian Stage Design guides the reader through the movements, styles, productions and projects that attracted many of Russia's early twentieth-century artists to the stage.

Cubism, widely regarded as the most influential style to emerge at the advent of modernism, had a home in New York and a leading figure in Max Weber.

Max Weber studied under Matisse, associated with influential figures including Apollinaire, Picasso, and Delaunay, and is credited with bringing firsthand knowledge of the Parisian avant-garde to Alfred Stieglitz’s modernist circle in New York, inspiring a generation of artists. While his works are in important collections, they have not yet received the close study of the artist’s peers, such as Picasso, Braque, and Leger.

William C. Agee, a veteran museum curator and renowned scholar of twentieth-century American art, and scholar Pamela N. Koob take up the challenge in a lavishly illustrated volume, gathering together a selection of Max Weber’s best cubist works. Close readings of Weber’s paintings open the most complete survey to date of American cubism, with entries on key cubist works by Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Hans Hofmann, Charles Sheeler, Morgan Russell, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, Alice Trumbull Mason, and David Smith, among many others. Filling in a missing piece of one of the twentieth century’s most influential movements, this critical reevaluation is long overdue.

Born in Iran to a family with a long history of dealing in Persian carpets, perhaps it was inevitable that Essie Sakhai should become a respected expert on Oriental and Persian carpets, gaining much of his great knowledge from his father Benayahoo Sakhai. Essie lives in North London, though he spends most of his time at Essie Carpets on the corner of Albemarle Street and Piccadilly in London's Mayfair, carrying on the family tradition started in the 18th century. Essie is a true enthusiast and hopes through his extensive lectures, interviews and writing (his previous books include The Story of Carpets, which has been translated into many languages, The Buyers' Guide, and Persian Rugs and Carpets: The Fabric of Life) to share his knowledge and passion for carpets with a wider audience. 

Jonathan Wadsworth is a renowned specialist in European, Persian and oriental rugs and carpets and has dedicated over 40 years to the study and promotion of carpets and woven art. Formerly a director of Sotheby’s Europe, Jonathan was head of their carpet department, and a flamboyant auctioneer based in London. Jonathan has been on the vetting committee of the prestigious Grosvenor House Antiques fair, London and acted as specialist consultant to auctioneers at home and abroad including Bowrings in New Delhi, India.
