At the end of the nineteenth century, Württembergische MetallwarenFabrik, or the Würtemberg Electro Plate Company as the firm was known outside Germany, was the world's largest manufacturer and exporter of household metalware. At its height, over 6,000 workers were employed in Germany, Poland and Austria, and almost 10,000 designs for objects ranging from teaspoons to enormous table centrepieces were produced. Widely known by its initials WMF, the company sometimes employed the services of leading German designers of the day, but for the most part, the wares were in a popular Jugendstil style, the German version of Art Nouveau. These decorative pieces are highly sought after today and are prized by collectors throughout the world.

WMF's domination of the export market is illustrated by the fact that they produced a sumptuous catalogue showing over 3,000 domestic pieces with descriptions in the English language. This catalogue was issued in 1906 by the company's English subsidiary from their showroom in Fore Street, London, and, as each illustration was hand-drawn, it must have represented a considerable investment. Original copies are now virtually unobtainable, and the complete catalogue is reprinted here with a detailed historical introduction by Graham Dry, a noted authority on nineteenth and twentieth-century decorative arts.

For the collector, this revised edition will provide a fascinating insight into the type and style of domestic metalwork that was available at the height of the Art Nouveau period. With details which include size, finish, and cost, the descriptions will be a major source of information.

The extraordinary collection of Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of Louis Vuitton, the founder of one of the world’s most famous luxury brands

A collector since his childhood, Gaston-Louis Vuitton (1883–1970) accumulated thousands of objects over his lifetime. His wide interests and voracious curiosity were intimately bound up with the future of the family business and with travel. In addition to forming his own collection of trunks – his primary motivation and the one he announced publicly – Gaston-Louis’s roving eye lit upon rare antique travel articles, locks, hand tools, perfume bottles, tribal arts, walking sticks, vintage children’s toys, books, hotel labels, printed monograms and other typographical rarities. Together they form a rich personal evocation of curiosités industrielles, or curiosities of the trade, as he liked to call them.

This collection will capture the imagination of anyone inspired by bizarre and eclectic curiosities, or those with an interest in the cultural taste of someone who lived through the height of the Art Deco period – indeed, someone whose life was defined by the rigours and rewards of world travel.

The art of collecting — from artist’s palettes still freckled with oil paint, to sculpted picture frames, to a menagerie of wooden toy animals — associating an accumulation of kindred objects is at the core of timeless French style.

French artist, designer, and talented antique hunter Marin Montagut celebrates the joy of collecting everything from textiles to barware to architectural details, taking readers inside a dozen private homes, flea markets, and unusual ateliers to discover the most whimsical treasure troves in France. From a film prop house’s array of leather sporting goods and playing cards to a travel buff’s vintage maps and globes, and from a sculpture studio’s Grecian plaster casts to an amateur designer’s spiral staircase models, and from Montagut’s own wonder wall assemblages to a cook’s haven filled with porcelain dessert molds and copper pots — objects, when presented together as a series, create unforgettable interiors that radiate charm. Inspiration comes in repetition: wooden zigzag rulers with engraved numbers aligned on a wall in a herringbone pattern create an artful space. The spare wooden forms of capipotes — devotional statues used in religious processions, their eyes turned heavenward in ecstasy — and silver ex-votos can be the point of departure for the theme of an entire room. Montagut’s mood boards for each chapter provide endless ideas for the home.

About the Author:

Marin Montagut is French illustrator and designer; his eponymous boutique is dedicated to whimsical decorative objects. He published Timeless Paris (Flammarion, 2021), is coauthor with Ines de la Fressange of Maison: Parisian Chic at Home (Flammarion, 2018), and he created and illustrated the Bonjour City Map-Guides. He has collaborated with the Château de Versailles and with many brands, including Farrow & Ball, the Ritz Paris, Diptyque, and Pierre Frey. Pierre Musellec is a lifestyle photographer; his work appeared in Timeless Paris and Faire magazine. Laura Fronty contributed text to Timeless Paris: Ateliers, Emporiums, Savoir Faire (Flammarion, 2021).

With over 300 stunning photographs and woodblock prints along with extensive historical and cultural commentary, Japanese Swords is the ultimate authority on Samurai weaponry.

Historically, Japanese warriors considered their swords to be more elevated than simple weaponry. Their swords were both lethal tools and divine companions -- social and religious icons. Traditionally worn by the samurai as a sign of social status, the Japanese sword represented the junction between the ruling military class and those whom they ruled. Moreover, the samurai sword was a technological and artistic marvel. Many scholars consider it to be the finest sword ever constructed.

Concerning symbolism and historical importance, no other blade comes close to the Japanese sword. With a historical, iconographical, and technological perspective, author Cohn M. Roach provides an in-depth study of these magnificent weapons in Japanese Swords. This richly illustrated sword book weaves the blade's primary influences together, tracking its history and illuminating its progress from infancy to grandeur. By studying the evolution of the Japanese sword from this perspective, we better understand Japan and its warrior archetype.

Combining research materials from multiple disciplines, Roach uses his expertise as an educator to guide readers through the sword's rise to greatness in a unique way. This book discusses the history, development, and spiritual symbolism of the sword, as well as the esoteric metallurgical techniques used in making it. It also covers the intense training practices used by skilled swordsmen.

Japanese Swords also includes accompanying online videos featuring a beautifully-filmed documentary that explores the traditional swordmaker's craft, an introduction to the Japanese sword at a sword shop in Kyoto and a visit to a dojo for a beginner's class in the medieval sword-drawing art called iaido.

About the Author:

Colin M. Roach, M.Ed. lives in the high mountains of Utah with his wife and three sons. He is a private school administrator with expertise in the areas of differentiated teaching and learning, and a member of the All Kinds of Minds Institute's national teaching faculty. Mr. Roach is an avid student of Japanese history, culture, and martial arts. Four generations of familial connection to Japan have fueled Mr. Roach's passionate study of Japan's archetypal warrior culture. In addition to his academic study of sword-related symbolism, he has trained with some of the top teachers of aikido and iaido in Japan and America. He holds the ranks of Youdan (4th degree) in iado and Sandan (3rd degree) in aikido. He also holds the teaching title ""Shidoin" in both arts. Mr. Roach often travels to teach sword-related symbolism, traditional Japanese swordsmanship, the etiquette involved when handling a Japanese sword, and iado's role in cultural preservation.

The first comprehensive study of the most important ceramic innovation of the 19th century

Colorful, wildly imaginative, and technically innovative, majolica was functional and aesthetic ceramic ware. Its subject matter reflects a range of 19th-century preoccupations, from botany and zoology to popular humor and the macabre. Majolica Mania examines the medium’s considerable impact, from wares used in domestic settings to monumental pieces at the World’s Fairs.

Essays by international  experts address the extensive output of the originators and manufacturers in England ― including Minton, Wedgwood, and George Jones ― and the migration of English craftsmen to the U.S. New research including information on important American makers in New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia is also featured.

Fully illustrated, the book is enlivened by new photography of pieces from major museums and private collections in the U.S. and Great Britain.

Chess, one of the world’s most popular games, has inspired artists for hundreds of years

Though apparently offering a limited canvas – each set has 32 pieces, each board 64 squares – sets have nevertheless been designed in countless ways, using almost every imaginable material: from precious metals to ivory and rock crystal. They have taken many forms, from figural to abstract, and used many diverse themes, from the historical and political to the beauty and variety of the animal kingdom.

This book brings together some of the most beautiful and unusual chess sets ever made. Over hundreds of years, from five continents, they are culled from private collections and museums, including 200-year-old sets made by nameless Indian craftsmen; sets by Peter Carl Fabergé; sets from Soviet gulag prisoners; and sets by leading artists of the 20th century, like Max Ernst.

Each set has been especially photographed for this book, with detailed insights provided by an exceptional group of experts: Dr. George Dean, Jon Crumiller, Larry List, Barbara Drake Boehm (senior curator of the Cloisters, Metropolitan Museum of Art) and William Wiles (Dezeen), with an introduction by the book’s editor, Dylan Loeb McClain, (former New York Times chess columnist).

A personal celebration of the hunt for — and joy of living with — favorite collections and things

What is it in our homes that we truly value and why? What would you take when you leave in fear of fire?

Our home is an expression of ourselves in many ways, largely through the objects we accumulate. For Maria Hummer-Tuttle, the objects she has collected over the years, from the priceless to the flea-market finds, are precious not only for their beauty, uniqueness, and craftsmanship but also for their connection to the past and the future, for their resonance with one another.

In this exquisitely illustrated book, she serves as our guide through three dwellings, focusing our attention on objects ranging from an ancient Chinese horse sculpture to a Louis XV clock painted with characters from an Aesop fable, from a small snail sculpture found in a venerable hardware store to a monumental safety-pin sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, and from 18th-century to 20th-century furniture.

With a foreword by master ceramicist and acclaimed author Edmund de Waal and featuring two lavish gatefolds, Objects of Desire is a feast for the eyes and an object to be cherished in its own right.

About the Authors:

Maria Hummer Tuttle practiced law for more than 25 years. She served as chairman of the Getty Board of Trustees and is on the board of numerous museums, arts foundations, and foreign policy, government, and education organizations. The third volume in this luxurious series, this work is a celebration of the most precious objects of the Cartier Collection.

The Cartier Collection, housed in Geneva, Switzerland, gathers together over 1,360 pieces that reveal the stylistic and technical developments in the creations of this world-renowned house. Following the previous works in this series devoted to Cartier’s jewelry and timepieces, this third volume explores the precious objects and accessories that complete the collection: from opulent gold and black enamel vanity cases set with platinum and rose-cut diamond fleurons to exquisite and stylish cigarette holders, belt buckles, hat pins, and evening bags. The jeweler has always placed great emphasis on male elegance and an array of men’s accessories is also showcased, including polished gold razors, sophisticated leather travel bags, and diamond-encrusted platinum and onyx cuff links.

From the extravagant yet sublime Tutti Frutti evening bag, made of a weave of seed pearls and dripping with gold, diamond, ruby, emerald, and sapphire details, to exotic and intricate Chinese powder compacts, these creations are works of fine art. This handsome volume recounts the history of the House of Cartier and its sublimation of often everyday items, which became veritable precious objects. The text is illustrated with more than 550 pieces taken from the collection ― beautifully reproduced in full size and in color ― which can usually only be admired in retrospective exhibitions held in internationally-renowned museums. Other archival material includes photographs of high society clients, detailed sketches and studies for various pieces, and vintage advertising posters.

Presented in a luxurious silk slipcase with ribbon closure, this tome is a tribute to some of the most exquisite objects in the Cartier Collection.

About the Authors:

François Chaille is an art historian and fashion expert. He has written several titles, including The Cartier Collection: Jewelry, The Cartier Collection: Timepieces, Cartier: Creative Writing, Cartier: Innovation through the 20th Century, and Girard-Perregaux.
