A retrospective of Max Beckmann’s career from before the First World War to his years in exile from Germany, first in Amsterdam and then New York

This catalogue is published to accompany the exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid, on Max Beckmann (1884–1950), one of Germany’s leading 20th-century artists. Initially close to Expressionism and New Objectivity, Beckmann developed a unique and independent pictorial style, one filled with symbolic resonances that offered a powerful account of the society of his day. Curated by Tomàs Llorens, the exhibition brings together more than fifty works, including paintings, lithographs and sculptures that cover Beckmann’s years in Germany from the period prior to World War I, when he first achieved public recognition, to the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s, when he was expelled from the Frankfurt art school where he taught and was banned from exhibiting in public.

The exhibition also focuses on the artist’s years in Amsterdam and the United States where he lived after he was obliged to leave Germany. This section is based on four metaphors relating to exile, understood both literally and as the existential condition of modern man: Masks, which looks at the loss of identity associated with the condition of exile; Electric Babylon, which focuses on the modern city as the capital of exile; The Long Goodbye, which constructs a parallel between exile and death; and The Sea, a metaphor of the infinite, its powers of seduction and alienation.

A detailed and highly personal account of the life and works of Berthe Morisot, the most influential female impressionist painter.

Berthe Morisot won over the impressionists with her talent and became the first woman of the group alongside Monet, Degas, and Renoir. She was the foremost female painter of the impressionist movement and, to quote Apollinaire, “one of the most complete artists of her day.” Underestimated for more than a century, today her works demonstrate how visionary she was, pioneering a new style of painting.

Including correspondence with key members of the impressionist movement, this book focuses on the most important stages of Morisot’s career: her precocious artistic talent as a child, her participation at age twenty-three in the Salon de Paris of 1864, her marriage in 1874 to Eugène Manet and the birth of their daughter, Julie ― a frequent subject in Morisot’s paintings ― and the expressive freedom of her later works. This intimate portrait of the artist and her work is an essential reference on the impressionists.

Although Bosch's known works amount to no more than two dozen paintings and a handful of drawings, the artist had an enormous impact on religious imagery during his lifetime and for centuries afterward. Fernando Botero is the best known Colombian artist of all times. His work is found in many international collections and is also known to be very well represented in several important donations he himself has made to his nation. There is no part of the world where people are not familiar with his name and recognize his distinctive artistic language, characterized by the devotion to form and volume found in figurative works which have placed themes drawn from Latin America, Colombia and his native Department (State) of Antioquia in the visual repertory of the history of world art.

Despite his worldwide recognition, the truth is that, in many senses, Botero is an unknown artist. There is a great analytical void about his career which has yet to be filled and above all, would vindicate his merits in historical terms as a painter in search of an identity of his own. It seems strange that even after six decades during which one of the most profilic and original artists of Latin America has produced a staggering abundance of works, there are few who have inquired into the origin of his distinctive approach to volume and color.

A major monograph on the artist widely regarded as the 16th century's greatest Netherlandish painter, published to mark the anniversary of his death 450 years ago

Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his work have attained a legendary status in our collective consciousness. The most important Netherlandish painter and draughtsman of the 16th century had already achieved great fame during his own lifetime, but was largely forgotten until his rediscovery by art historians in the early 20th century. Just over forty paintings by Bruegel’s own hand survive.
