Forty masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) from the prestigious Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo - which houses one of the greatest Van Gogh collections - document the Dutch painter's entire career, on the eve of the 170th anniversary of his birth.

A superbly illustrated survey of Velázquez’s court portraits from 1649 to his death in 1660

This book presents a complete survey of one of the key moments in the history of the Spanish court portrait, a period spanning the years 1650 to 1680.

In 1650 Velázquez was in Rome, where he depicted members of the papal court with a new freedom of approach, while the following year saw his keenly awaited return to Spain, where he returned to the conventions of the court portrait. From that point onwards and until his death in 1660, Velázquez devoted most of his efforts to satisfying a growing demand for portraits of the Spanish royal family. These images were used for both family and diplomatic purposes, given that Philip IV’s children with his last wife, Mariana of Austria, were essential elements in the strategic creation of political alliances across Europe.

These last ten years of Velázquez’s career constitute a period with a marked and distinctive personality. His sitters were now primarily women and children rather than men, a difference that was accompanied by changes in the density of the pigment, the pictorial handwriting and the colour range, which became wider and richer. In terms of artistic achievement and social advancement, this decade marks the peak of Velázquez's career, with Las Meninas as his great masterpiece.

After the artist's death, his activities as court painter were continued by Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo and Juan Carreno de Miranda. Like Velázquez, both focused on colour while also offering a reconsidered interpretation of the royal image based on his last portraits and in particular on his inclusion in those images of interiors in the royal palace.

After completing his studies of art history and archaeology at the University of Vienna, Karl Schütz joined the staff of the Gemäldegalerie of the city’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, serving from 1972 as a curator and from 1990 to 2011 as its director. Walton Ford, born 1960, studied filmmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, but soon realized he was a painter. For the last 20 years, he has been creating large-scale narrative watercolours. His work has been widely exhibited, including solo shows at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

About the Author:

William Klein (1926-2022) was an American photographer, painter, designer and filmmaker. New York-born, Klein settled in Paris in 1948, where he studied at the Sorbonne and pursued his artistic career working briefly under Fernand Léger. Best known as a photographer, achieving fame with a series of acclaimed photobooks, including Life is Good and Good for You In New York (1956) and through his fashion photography in Vogue magazine. Klein was also a filmmaker, directing both feature films and documentaries, a graphic designer and art director.

Yayoi Kusama, now in her eighties, has become a vital force in contemporary art and an influence on generations of artists. Arriving in New York City in 1958 from her native Japan, she embarked on a series of works that forged a new visual vocabulary - the Net paintings, which were composed of scores of small, thickly painted loops spanning large canvases. Her singular approach to art making continued in other extraordinary bodies of work, including the phallic soft sculptures which she later incorporated into full-scale environments. In 1973 she returned to Japan, where she lives and works today.

Since then, she has created dazzling walk-in mirror rooms and her now-famous pumpkin sculptures, as well as writing poetry and novels. Yayoi Kusama is among the artists she represents and works with closely. Leslie Camhi, who first encountered Yayoi Kusama’s work nearly two decades ago, has written about art, books, fashion, and women’s lives for the New York Times, Vogue, and many other publications.  

RoseLee Goldberg, Founding Director and Curator of Performa, is an art historian, critic, and curator whose book Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present, first published in 1979, pioneered the study of performance art. Born and raised in Tokyo, Takaya Goto completed his post-graduate design education in the United States. He is a co-founder of Goto Design, a multidisciplinary design studio based in New York. Laura Hoptman is Senior Curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she has organized the exhibitions “Drawing Now: Eight Propositions” (2002) and “Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama” (1998), among many others. 

Chris Kraus is the author of four novels, including the forthcoming Summer of Hate (Semiotexte, 2012) and two books of art criticism.  Since 1975, Arthur Lubow has worked primarily as a writer of long-reported articles for national magazines. For the last decade, he has been a contributing writer at the New York Times Magazine, specializing in the arts. Kevin McGarry is a writer, editor, and curator. He writes the contemporary art column “Out There” for T: The New York Times Style Magazine, is the art editor for V Magazine, and reviews exhibitions for Art Agenda and Artforum.com. Akira Tatehata is a curator, critic, and poet. Olivier Zahm is a curator, writer, editor, and co-founder of Purple Prose.
