About the Author:

Dave Cooper is a cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer who lives in Ottawa, Ontario. First known for his comics, he has also worked extensively as a designer, producer, and creator in the field of animation: his designs have been used in Futurama, Nickelodeon's Pig Goat Banana Cricket, of which he was co-creator, and Teletoon's The Bagel and Becky Show, which he created. As of 2003, Cooper has focused on oil painting and fine art, exhibiting in galleries in New York, Los Angeles and Paris, where he has gathered a celebrity cult following that includes David Cross, David Cronenberg, and Guillermo del Toro. 

The first exploration of Piranesi’s work as a draughtsman, published to coincide with an exhibition at the British Museum

The Venetian-born artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778) is best known for his dramatic etchings of the architecture and antiquities of his adopted city, Rome, and for his extraordinary flights of spatial fancy, such as Le Carceri (‘Prisons’).

About the Authors:

Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was one of the foremost members of the Abstract Expressionist movement. He is known for his colour field paintings, which used staining techniques to create abstract fields of colour on large canvases. Rothko was a guest instructor at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, and taught at Brooklyn College, the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Tulane University. From 1958 to 1969, he worked on three major commissions: monumental canvases for the Four Seasons Restaurant and Seagram Building, both in New York; murals for the Holyoke Center, Harvard University; and canvases for the chapel at the Institute of Religion and Human Development, Houston, known worldwide as "The Rothko Chapel." His work is held in gallery and museum collections worldwide.

Janet Bishop is the Thomas Weisel Family Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. While the museum underwent expansion construction, she oversaw "SFMOMA on the Go," an innovative program of exhibitions presented throughout the Bay Area and beyond. She is best known for her curatorial work on Matisse/Diebenkorn; The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso, and the Parisian Avant-Garde; and Robert Bechtle: A Retrospective.

Dore Ashton is an award-winning critic of modern and contemporary art. An authority on Abstract Expressionism and the New York School of the 1950s and 1960s, she is the author and editor of more than 30 books, including About Rothko, a celebrated biography of Mark Rothko. Ashton is a professor of Art History at the Cooper Union in New York City.

Stanley Donwood is an artist and writer who has collaborated with Radiohead since the release of their single ‘My Iron Lung’ in 1994. Having met frontman Thom Yorke at the University of Exeter, he has gone on to create all the band’s artwork to date. In addition to his work for Radiohead, Donwood maintains a website, ‘Slowly Downward’, of his stories and other writings, and has exhibited in London, Sydney, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
Thom Yorke is an English musician and the singer and main songwriter of the band Radiohead.

To the general public, Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is perhaps best known for his posters of Sarah Bernhardt and magnificent decorative panels such as "The Seasons" — works that continue to grow in popularity and value as the resurgence of interest in Art Nouveau increases. Among graphic artists and commercial designers, Mucha is praised for the innovative style books that pioneered the use of Art Nouveau in commercial packaging, design, and ornament.

The most important of these style books was Documents Décoratifs, published in 1901 at the height of Mucha's fame as the high priest of the Art Nouveau movement. While the artist's fame rests largely on his posters, it is in the smaller works of the style books, or design portfolios, that the refinement of his technique can best be appreciated. In the Foreword by Gabriel Mourey, specially translated for this edition, Mucha's own philosophy of art, and the relation of the Documents to the rest of his work, receive an appreciative and informative discussion.

Hitherto available only in scattered sources, or in the libraries of wealthy collectors, the complete Documents Décoratifs is now available in this inexpensive one-volume edition. Lovers of Mucha's work, admirers of Art Nouveau, and the application of that style to the decorative arts, will want to own this fine royalty-free collection by one of the greatest masters of the technique.
