"I like looking at things from a different angle and questioning what is expected."
– Jean Paul Gaultier

This book tracks the stellar career of maverick designer Jean Paul Gaultier from his first show in Paris in 1976, when he challenged the current ideals of beauty and promoted a style of fashion which embraced ethnic diversity and models of all shapes and sizes.

Seen as an enfant terrible when he first burst on to the fashion scene, his titillating, provocative designs embrace corset dresses, conical bustiers, biker jackets paired with ballet tutus and skirts for men, along with classic fashion staples such as beautifully cut smoking jackets and trench coats.

By the turn of this century he had put Madonna in corsets for her Blonde Ambition tour, dressed celebrities for the red carpet and moved seamlessly between mainstream popular culture (co-hosting the outré British TV show Eurotrash and designing award-winning film costumes for Luc Besson and Pedro Almodovar) while also launching his own seriously successful haute couture label – an addition to a burgeoning empire of ready-to-wear, perfume and kidswear.

With stunning images captured in the pages of Vogue by photographers like Mario Testino and Lord Snowdon, Vogue on Jean Paul Gaultier shows how his avant-garde fashion creations and cutting-edge designs revealed Gaultier’s unerring instinct for how women want to dress.

When Tony Viramontes' work appeared in the late 1970s, his hard and direct style of drawing was a marked contrast to the prevailing soft-pastel school of fashion illustration. He scored immediate success, rapidly acquiring the kind of prestigious editorial commissions normally given to photographers, from Lei, Per Lui in Italy, Vogue in the USA, The Face in Britain, and Le Monde and Le Figaro in France.

This beautiful hardback book brings together an extensive collection of his work, featuring striking images of smouldering and smoky-eyed men and women who vibrate with New Wave energy. Viramontes worked with some of the most celebrated names in fashion including Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Chanel, Claude Montana and Christian Dior.

His images, from the portraits of Paloma Picasso and Isabella Rossellini to the album covers he conceived for Arcadia and Janet Jackson, perfectly capture the mood of the 1980s club and fashion scene.

Dubbed the enfant terrible of fashion ever since his prêt-à-porter collections were first shown in 1976, Jean Paul Gaultier, whose avant-garde and bold fashions very early on reflected the issues facing contemporary society, is one of the leading designers in recent decades.

Published by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Abrams in conjunction with the first-ever retrospective on Gaultier, this stunning hardcover book in a slipcase explores the ties between the designer and the pop/rock music scene, film, and dance, and sheds light on his sources of inspiration, which are as eclectic as they are impertinent.

The first major monograph on Gaultier brings together archival documents and over fifty interviews with Gaultier’s muses and colleagues, as well as the artists he has created costumes for: Pedro Almodóvar, Catherine Deneuve, Madonna, Helen Mirren, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Martin Margiela, Pierre Cardin, Dita Von Teese, Marion Cotillard, Kylie Minogue, Polly Mellen, and Tom Ford, to name just a few.

It features many previously unpublished illustrations thanks to the collaboration of renowned fashion photographers and the Maison Jean Paul Gaultier. The publication also includes two interviews with Gaultier, one by Florence Müller, art historian, and the other by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, as well as an interview with Valerie Steele, fashion historian and director of New York’s Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). An essay written by Suzy Menkes looks at Gaultier’s fashion shows and examines their visionary reflection of society’s evolution over the past thirty-five years.
