The quintessential California Modernist. Richard Neutra and his search for modern architecture

Indoor-outdoor flow meets clean, crisp modernism in the structures of Austrian-American Richard Neutra, master of postwar architecture whose cool, sleek style synthesized technology with nature. This monograph compiles his complete works — nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings — illustrated by over 1,000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman.

Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style.

Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.

In this volume, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

The authors:

Barbara Lamprecht is a writer and teacher in architectural history, with a focus on modernism. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record, and Fine Homebuilding and also practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces.

American photographer Julius Shulman’s images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright’s or Pierre Koenig’s remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend, Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman’s photography. The clarity of his work demanded that architectural photography had to be considered as an independent art form. Each Shulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape. The precise compositions reveal not just the architectural ideas behind a building’s surface, but also the visions and hopes of an entire age. A sense of humanity is always present in his work, even when the human figure is absent from the actual photographs. Today, a great many of the buildings documented by Shulman have disappeared or been crudely converted, but the thirst for his pioneering images is stronger than ever before.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. He has published TASCHEN monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner, and Richard Neutra, as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture series.

With this introduction to the work of Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), TASCHEN's Basic Architecture series shines its spotlight on one of the most influential figures in the history of Western architecture. 

Palladio's Villa Rotonda in Vicenza became the most famous building of its kind; it influenced many later designs and remains an important source of inspiration for today s architects. 

The Palladian style, distinguished by the typical Serlian windows, pillared façades resembling Roman temples, symmetrical floor plans, and elevations, was imported to other European countries and became widely known; in Great Britain, it was one the important roots of 17th and 18th-century architecture.

In the 19th century, American architecture heavily referred to the style, as seen in, for example, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home.

The artist:

Renzo Piano (born in 1937) studied at the University of Florence and at Milan’s Polytechnic Institute. A recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1989 and the 1998 Pritzker Prize, Piano’s most iconic projects include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Shard in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has his main offices in his native Genoa and in Paris.

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. William Smalley established his studio in London in 2010 with the simple aim of making beautiful spaces and places. He has since worked around the UK and abroad. He has been described as an architect of rare sensibility, and his work as having the simplicity of a limewashed medieval building, filtered and made lucid through a completely modern sensibility. Edmund de Waal is an internationally renowned artist and writer, best known for his large-scale installations of porcelain vessels, often created in response to collections and archives. He published his bestselling family memoir, The Hare with Amber Eyes, in 2010. He lives and works in London. Harry Crowder is a British photographer, based in London and working nationally and internationally, focusing on interiors and architecture. His work seeks to capture the feeling of being in a space. He travelled extensively with William in the shooting of this book. Hélène Binet is an internationally acclaimed Swiss-French photographer based in London. She studied photography in Rome, and over more than thirty-five years has captured both contemporary and historic architecture. She is a fervent advocate of analogue photography, working exclusively on film.

About the Author:

Santiago Calatrava is a highly revered architect, who has received many distinctions as well as awards and honorary doctorates. Born in Valencia in 1951, he initially studied architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in his hometown, followed by constructional engineering at the ETH Zurich. He established his own company in 1981, which today has subsidiaries in Dubai and New York. His most important current major work is the transportation hub at the Ground Zero in New York with its characteristic "oculus" hall, which was inaugurated in 2016.

Skylab: The Nature of Buildings is the first monograph of the Portland, Oregon-based architecture and design studio. Founded by Jeff Kovel in 1999, Skylab has emerged as a leading creative force in the Pacific Northwest and North America. At the vanguard of innovative and sustainable design, the practice is known for a range of spectacular residences designed for leading creatives, as well as distinctive music venues, resorts, and other high-profile projects, including the N M Bodecker Foundation, Nike’s Serena Williams Building, and the Columbia Building. Presenting more than two decades of work, the story of Skylab is told by several influential contributors through reflective essays, interviews, conversations and anecdotes, as well as extensive project photography and illustrations that detail the firm’s design process.

A uniquely crafted object, the book’s design is based on the concept of a double vinyl album, with four 'sides' (A, B, C, D), ten projects 'tracks', inside front- and back-cover gatefolds, and nine project 'interlude' foldout posters in the book.

Established two decades ago in Portland, Oregon, Skylab are a band of makers – architects, designers, creators and entrepreneurs working together across a wide range of landscapes and locations. Jeff Kovel is the founder and design principle of Skylab Architecture Studio. He has been a leading creative force in the dramatic evolution of Portland over the last twenty years and his work can be found in wildly different contexts, spanning residential, commercial, civic, retail, prefab, museum exhibitions and music and sports venues. Benjamin Halpern is an Associate at Skylab.

Architect Tom Kundig is known worldwide for the originality of his work.

This paperback edition of Tom Kundig: Houses, first published in 2006, collects five of his most prominent early residential projects, which remain touchstones for him today. In a new preface written for this edition, Kundig reflects on the influence that these designs continue to have on his current thinking.

Kundig's work has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times Magazine, Architect, Architectural Record, and Architectural Digest. His most recent book, Tom Kundig: Working Title, was published in 2020.
