'Living Buildings' celebrates the 50th anniversary of Donald Insall Associates, the firm led by British architect Donald Insall. Responsable for the restoration of Windsor Castle after a fire in 1992, Insallís preservation architecture has given longevity to Britainís stately homes, town halls, churches, entire city precincts, hospitals, royal palaces, castles, public buildings and public spaces.

In 1958, Insall and several of his colleagues founded a famous architectural practice in England based on architectural conservation, that is, the salvation, restoration, and rehabilitation of historic buildings and neighborhoods. (In the United States, this practice is called historic preservation.) This book commemorates these 50 years of professional practice, mostly in England, involving some of the United Kingdom's most cherished historic resources (e.g., Windsor Castle, Somerset House, and Covent Garden).

Divided into two sections, the book covers assessing, analyzing, planning, and implementing individual restoration projects ("Organizing the Project") and daily maintenance through radical rehabilitation to contextual new construction ("Degrees of Intervention").

Containing over 600 luxurious color maps, photos, and plans of a wide variety of projects in England, this work could easily serve as a textbook for a beginner's course in historic preservation. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

Published by the interdisciplinary design studio MODU, this "field guide" explores threshold spaces between the interior and the exterior. What are experiences between architecture and the environment? Where can the boundaries between the interior and the urban be drawn? What role does the climate crisis play in this? For their research and design projects, Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem look at three major cities on different continents: New York, Rome, and Tokyo. MODU leaves behind the binary idea of inside and outside and rather understands architecture as an extension of the environment. Thus, it imagines a hybrid of urban space, architecture, and interior space. The book explores the different geographic locations and presents their own design projects.

MODU is a Brooklyn, New York-based design studio working in architecture, urbanism, and interior design. It is led by Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem and focuses on thinking architecture, urbanism, and the environment together. In 2017, they won the Rome Prize.

About the Author:

Bill Bensley is a gardener, fisherman, architect, interior designer, wide-ranging explorer and lover of all things natural. He was born in Orange County, California in 1959, when orange trees grew there. The day after graduating from Harvard, Bensley moved to Asia, where he went on to establish his own studio, BENSLEY, in Bangkok (1989) and Bali (1990). Since then, with his team of over 150 talented individuals, Bensley has designed more than 200 resorts, hotels and palaces in 30-plus countries.Suzy Annetta is the founding editor-in-chief of Design Anthology magazine, a Hong Kong–based independent publication that celebrates the burgeoning creative and cultural scene in Asia. The quintessential California Modernist. Richard Neutra and his search for modern architecture

Indoor-outdoor flow meets clean, crisp modernism in the structures of Austrian-American Richard Neutra, master of postwar architecture whose cool, sleek style synthesized technology with nature. This monograph compiles his complete works — nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings — illustrated by over 1,000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman.

Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style.

Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.

In this volume, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

The authors:

Barbara Lamprecht is a writer and teacher in architectural history, with a focus on modernism. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record, and Fine Homebuilding and also practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces.

American photographer Julius Shulman’s images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright’s or Pierre Koenig’s remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend, Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman’s photography. The clarity of his work demanded that architectural photography had to be considered as an independent art form. Each Shulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape. The precise compositions reveal not just the architectural ideas behind a building’s surface, but also the visions and hopes of an entire age. A sense of humanity is always present in his work, even when the human figure is absent from the actual photographs. Today, a great many of the buildings documented by Shulman have disappeared or been crudely converted, but the thirst for his pioneering images is stronger than ever before.

Peter Gössel runs an agency for museum and exhibition design. He has published TASCHEN monographs on Julius Shulman, R. M. Schindler, John Lautner, and Richard Neutra, as well as several titles in the Basic Architecture series.

Palladio's Villa Rotonda in Vicenza became the most famous building of its kind; it influenced many later designs and remains an important source of inspiration for today s architects. 

The Palladian style, distinguished by the typical Serlian windows, pillared façades resembling Roman temples, symmetrical floor plans, and elevations, was imported to other European countries and became widely known; in Great Britain, it was one the important roots of 17th and 18th-century architecture.

In the 19th century, American architecture heavily referred to the style, as seen in, for example, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home.

The artist:

Renzo Piano (born in 1937) studied at the University of Florence and at Milan’s Polytechnic Institute. A recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1989 and the 1998 Pritzker Prize, Piano’s most iconic projects include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Shard in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has his main offices in his native Genoa and in Paris.

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. Edmund de Waal is an internationally renowned artist and writer, best known for his large-scale installations of porcelain vessels, often created in response to collections and archives. Harry Crowder is a British photographer, based in London and working nationally and internationally, focusing on interiors and architecture. His work seeks to capture the feeling of being in a space. About the Author:

Santiago Calatrava is a highly revered architect, who has received many distinctions as well as awards and honorary doctorates. Born in Valencia in 1951, he initially studied architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in his hometown, followed by constructional engineering at the ETH Zurich. He established his own company in 1981, which today has subsidiaries in Dubai and New York. His most important current major work is the transportation hub at the Ground Zero in New York with its characteristic "oculus" hall, which was inaugurated in 2016.
