Since the founding of Moore Ruble Yudell with Charles Moore in 1977, principals John Ruble and Buzz Yudell have built a varied body of work ranging from private residences to multi-million-dollar institutional, civic and mixed-use developments. While Duquette's own work receives full attention, an entire chapter is devoted to the artwork and persona of his wife, Elizabeth "Beegle". This personal dimension is further enhanced by countless anecdotes about the fabulous life they led together: their international travels, active social lives among royalty and the jet-set, their many dinner parties and gatherings, their homes and studios.

The final chapter reveals that Duquette's legacy is alive and well as Wilkinson continues to develop the Duquette style and expand the brand across the globe.

This book highlights radical urban transformation in eight cities spread across continental Europe. The point of departure, and the foundation of European urbanisation, is the Roman colonial town. In every case social dynamics guided the urban transitions in a traceable way, such that it has been possible to deduce the intellectual underpinnings of the contemporary built environments, as featured in these pages. Differing contexts of time and place show the overarching march of European history and related themes at the urban level. Fundamental changes are brought to light. Each story demonstrates a separate and fundamental transition, ranging from earlier collective configurations to the more institutionalised structures of later periods.

This monograph is the first to document all of the built work by Morphosis, a Los Angeles-based practice headed by Thom Mayne and one of the most influential architecture firms of the past twenty years. Morphosis`s unconventional geometries beautifully executed, sculptural models and complex, computer-generated drawings helped to usher in a new era of architectural experimentation in the early 1980s. This book is comprised of bold, documentary-style colour photographs of thirty-five completed buildings presented in an almost cinematic layout, and publishes for the first time together all of Morphosis`s completed work, from the early residential and restaurant projects in Los Angeles to the most recent large-scale work beyond California and the United States in Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Austria. Thom Mayne founded Morphosis in 1972 in partnership with Michael Rotondi, who now has his own firm. Over the past twenty years, Maynes academic posts have included teaching positions at Columbia University, Harvard University, Yale University, the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, among other institutions.

One of the few truly visionary architects of large-scale commissions working today, Thom Mayne’s influential firm Morphosis, founded in the early 1970s, has maintained an avant-garde presence among contemporary architecture firms, even as it has garnered high-profile, big-budget commissions from around the world.

Since Rizzoli published Volume I of the Morphosis series in 1989, the Los Angeles–based firm has continued to push its intricate modernism into new territories. In the tradition of its four visually groundbreaking predecessors, this fifth volume packs 500 illustrations into a comprehensive tour of Morphosis’s activity.

New works covered in Volume V include Cal Trans Headquarters in Los Angeles (2004); the San Francisco Federal Office building (2006); the Wayne L. Morse United States Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon (2006); and the University of Cincinnati Student Recreation Center (2006). Projects in progress, such as the New Academic Building for the Cooper Union in New York (expected completion 2008) and the Phare Tower for La Defense, France (2012), will also be featured.

About the Author

Thom Mayne is a professor of architecture at UCLA, and one of the founders of the avant-garde institution SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture) in Los Angeles. In 1995 he won the Pritzker Prize. Jeffrey Kipnis is an architecture and design curator, critic, and professor at Ohio State University.

One of the few truly visionary architects of large-scale commissions working today, Thom Mayne won the 2005 Pritzker Architecture Prize, his field's most prestigious award.

Mighty Morris. The arts and crafts power of designer William Morris

William Morris was a polymath designer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, associated with England’s Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as well as Arts and Crafts movement. His prolific design work included tiles, embroidery, tapestries, wallpaper, and carpets and championed handcraftsmanship, natural dyes, “art for all”, and beautiful patterns of subtly stylized natural forms.

William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the greatest creative figures of the 19th century. As a visionary designer, as well as a manufacturer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, he pioneered the Arts and Crafts movement of the Victorian era, and left an extraordinary influence on architecture, textile, and interior design.

This richly illustrated book offers a suitably beautiful introduction to Morris’s colourful life and all aspects of his design work, including interiors, tiles, embroidery, tapestries, carpets, and calligraphy. Though best known in his lifetime as a poet and author, it is these exquisite designs that secured Morris’s posthumous reputation. The work of the MVRDV architectural studio can be seen as a symbol for the important turning point in Dutch architecture which took place in the 1990s and which set in motion a radical transformation of the country.
MVRDV, established in 1990, is made up of architects who studied under Rem Koolhaas. The practice is one of the most brilliant and stimulating exponents of recent Dutch modernism. Through its successful projects, international competitions and publications, it has demonstrated a new and experimental way of understanding and designing the contemporary city. At the end of the 1990s it took the spotlight with the VPRO building in Hilversum and the WoZoCo’s special residential buildings in Amsterdam; these projects were supported contemporaneously by the theoretical contributions entitled Farmax and Metacity/Datatown. MVRDV then gained international critical renown with the Dutch Pavilion for the Hanover Expo. The studio is one of the most dynamic concept and design realities in contemporary architecture, able to produce both theory and design, and actively renew the key words and language of architecture in the context of a reality in deep transformation.
This design philosophy can be seen in MVRDV’s most recent works, such as the two houses for Borneo-Sporenburg, the Silodam building of overlapping villas in Amsterdam, the Hageneiland village in Ypenburg, the Central Library in Brabant and the recent residential complex built in Madrid.

Sze-king Kan, an architect who graduated in 1989 from the renowned AA (Architectural Association School of Architecture), has worked for internationally recognized architectural firm - Sir Richard Rogers Partnership (now renamed as Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Thames Wharf) and participated in the London Heathrow Airport project.

Kan returned to Hong Kong in 1996 and established CHK Partnership Ltd to promote his ideology of “Architerior” – minimalist aesthetics. During his school years, he had already won many awards; his interior design projects have also been awarded the APIDA and Perspective Awards. In his early career, he focused on restaurant designs; his projects include the COVA at Pacific Place, Pink Mao Mao at Happy Valley, Star of Shangdong, and over 30 other high class cuisine outlets. In recent years, Kan is engaged in office designs and independent residential projects.

Kan likes photography and mountain biking. Strongly influenced by Louis Kahn’s architectural philosophy, he enjoys seeing things with fresh eyes and unique interpretations.
