From his early days as one of the "New York Five," Richard Meier has been a central figure in contemporary architecture; this updated 2013 trade edition of the XL version is published in the occasion of the firm’s 50th anniversary. With the Getty Center and more recent buildings such as the Jubilee Church in Rome, Meier has established a reputation for expanded the horizons of contemporary American architecture while maintaining his rigorously rational approach to design and detailing. Known for carefully conceived grid plans and frequent use of white, Meier is a master of light, space, and volume, able to adapt his style to very different circumstances and locations.

Philip Jodidio (born 1954) studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His books include TASCHEN’s Architecture Now! series, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Zaha Hadid. Richard Meier is one of the most renowned architects working today. This extensively illustrated presentation vividly conveys the purity and power of Meier’s vision. Thirty residential, commercial, and civic projects are featured, including the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome, the Burda Collection Museum and Arp Museum in Germany, San Jose City Hall, the Broad Art Center at UCLA, apartment towers in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and master plans for Newark, New Jersey, and Manhattan’s East Side. 

Richard Meier received his architectural training at Cornell University and began his career in the early 1960s designing private residential projects whose elegant modernist style and white facades have become icons of modern architecture. 
Since that time, his international practice has included museums, courthouses, city halls, corporate headquarters, educational facilities, and public housing, in addition to private houses. 

He has received numerous awards for his work, including the Pritzker Prize for Architecture and the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects.

About the Author

Kenneth Frampton is the author of numerous volumes, essays, and articles of architectural criticism and theory, including, for Rizzoli, American Masterworks. He is the Ware Professor of Architecture at Columbia University. 

Paul Goldberger is an architecture critic for The New Yorker magazine and has won the Pulitzer Prize for his work at The New York Times. He holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at the New School in New York.

This new title in the Modern Masters series is dedicated to the distinguished American architect and includes an introductory essay by Kenneth Frampton, one of the most prestigious names in the field of architecture history. This complete monograph presents 89 of Meier’s buildings, documenting the principal stages of Meier’s career in chronological order, from his early private homes and residential buildings—such as the two large complexes of Twin Parks, Bronx, New York and the Bronx Development Center—to recent major projects in the United States and in several European countries, including Italy. Among the well-known works in this volume are the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art and the church of Dives in Misericordia, Rome. In the early 1970s, Meier was one of the “New York Five,” an informal group of East Coast architects who shared a preference for new and original contributions to the modern tradition and shaped an alternative to the “gray” architecture that dominated highrise East Coast buildings at the time.

From the second half of the sixties the rise and consolidation, and more in general the creative career, of Richard Meier has been characterised by slow but steady reflection on modernity, its matrix and the possibility that it can be considered, even today, as a means of regeneration.

Born and raised in Vienna, Richard Neutra (1872-1970) came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs him recognition as one of Modernist architecture`s greatest talents.

Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.

In a conversation with renowned architecture critic Paul Goldberger, Stern discusses the principles that have guided the firm since its inception, focusing on the collaborative nature of the work and the importance of precedent and context. He also describes his own role as an educator, as dean of the architecture school at Yale University, and his deep interest in the history of architecture, first awakened during his student days at Yale. 

About the Author
Robert A. M. Stern, the principal partner of the architectural practice he founded in 1969, is also dean of the Yale School of Architecture. In addition to monographs on the firm's work, Stern has written a series of books on New York's architecture and urbanism, including New York 1880, New York 1900, New York 1930, and New York 1960.
