The iron-on lettering that is the subject of Heated Words: Searching for a Mysterious Typeface remains without attribution. Created anonymously and passed down over decades and across subcultures, the typeface is unique within the histories of typography and street fashion.

With roots dating back to the first calligraphic forms, the enigmatic letters evolved from embellished military flight jackets and sports uniforms in the early part of the twentieth century. Seemingly omnipresent from the 1970s onward in youth culture in New York City, this particular blackletter typeface — bold and imposing — would go on to decorate the fabric of the most influential music and fashion subcultures of the last half-century.

Heated Words provides a unique thread through the subcultural landscape of the last fifty years. With insights from voices in the fields of music, fashion and typography, the unique volume features previously unpublished archival images, including hundreds of illustrations and ephemera. Exploring the visual branding of the “outsider” and the resurgence of analog typography, Heated Words is presented through a layout and design that echo the frenetic history of the letters themselves.

About the Authors:

Rory McCartney is a creative director working within art, fashion, and music. He established Modern Construct, a creative practice with a focus on typography, and holds a research position at The Slade School of Fine Art, London. Charlie Morgan has spent the last quarter-century at the intersection between brands and culture, working in-house with brands such as Crooked Tongues, VANS, VICE, and New Balance.

Видавництво: Prestel

This beautiful book presents the extraordinary work of the iconic American "outsider" artist in a new critical light, locating him as a major figure in the history of contemporary art.

Self-taught and working in isolation until his death in 1973, Henry Darger realized an elaborate fantasy world of remarkable beauty and strangeness through hundreds of paintings and an epic written narrative. Angel-like Blengins with butterfly wings, natural catastrophes, innocent girls, and murderous soldiers all appear in Darger's scenes, which are reproduced in this book in double-page and gatefold illustrations.

In the volume's introductory essay, Klaus Biesenbach examines the radical originality of Darger's art, including his use of collage, incorporation of religious themes and iconography, and frequent juxtaposition of innocence with violence. An essay by Brooke Davis Anderson illuminates Darger's source materials and techniques, while another by Michael Bonesteel puts Darger's life in the context of his work.

The book also includes Darger's autobiography, “A History of My Life," introduced by Carl Watson. The only book of its kind, Henry Darger offers an authoritative, balanced, and insightful look at an American master.

About the Author:

Klaus Biesenbach is Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

Gorgeous paper constructions expand on Hermès’ scarf designs in this luxury pop-up book.

Every year, the iconic luxury brand Hermès chooses a new theme to celebrate its creative direction for the upcoming year. This practice began in 1987, marking the brand’s 150th anniversary, and has since become a beloved tradition―a way to combine the house’s proud, storied heritage with its creative vision for the future.

This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Play’, and Hermès is celebrating in style with this new, deluxe pop-up book. Featuring a selection of fourteen of the house’s iconic square scarf designs, both old and more recent, this book brings the designs alive with exhilarating ingenuity. Delicate paper constructions bring out the depth and volume within the scarf designs; zebras rear up, delicately arching trees grow from the page and painterly strokes detach themselves from the paper surface. This is the Hermès carré as you’ve never seen it before.

For Hermès, a brand associated with the highest quality luxury materials and design, ‘play is movement, freedom, imagination, fantasy, seduction, lightness.’ Impeccably produced, Hermès Pop Up gives readers the chance to play around in the brand’s archives.

Surveying applied arts and industrial design from the 18th century to the present day, this book explores the dynamic relationship between design and manufacturing, and the technological, social and commercial context in which this relationship developed. The effects of a vastly enlarged audience for the products of modern design and the complex dynamic of mass consumption are also discussed. Part of this dynamic reveals that products serve as signs for desires that have little to do with need or function.

The book also explores the impact of a wealth of new man-made industrial materials and tools on the course of modern design - from steel to titanium, plywood to plastic, cotton to nylon, wire to transistors, and microprocessors to nanotubes. The research, development and applications of these technologies are shown as depending upon far-reaching lines of communication stretching across geographical and linguistic boundaries.

Extensively revised and expanded for this second edition, History of Modern Design is an inclusive, well-balanced introduction to a field of increasing scholarly and interdisciplinary research, and provides students in design with historical perspectives of their chosen fields of study.

Foreword by Duke of Devonshire, Introduction by Countess of Burlington, Edited by Hamish Bowles, Text by Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell and Charlotte Mosley
ID: 16372
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Chatsworth has been home to the Cavendish family and the hereditary dukes of Devonshire since the original Elizabethan house was built on the site purchased by Sir William Cavendish in 1549. A famous historic house in England, Chatsworth is renowned as much for its fashionable history—its majestic dresses and tiaras, its magnificent lace and splendid uniforms—as its unrivaled collection of art, its palatial gardens, and its celebrated family dynasty.

House Style takes the reader through images of show-stopping ensembles by the most celebrated designers of the day, from the Victorian era’s Jean–Philippe Worth to Alexander McQueen, and also features historic examples of ceremonial, military, court costume, fancy dress, and estate liveries, as well as clothing worn by members of the family to ride, hunt, shoot, and fish. New images of the rare surviving garments and gorgeous contemporary photographs are accompanied by new essays from leading historians and fashion critics. An exclusive invitation into the glamorous world of Chatsworth, this book is a true collectible for Anglophiles, fashion-history aficionados, and those fascinated by aristocratic style.

About the Author:

The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire reside at Chatsworth, home to the family since 1549. The Countess of Burlington is an editor, and wife of William Burlington, heir to the Duke of Devonshire. Hamish Bowles is the international editor-at-large at Vogue.

A tweed suit, pipe, umbrella, and hat; a large dose of British humor and no sports — well, except for cricket. The Chap is the modern English gentleman, and he’s out to conquer the world.

How to be Chap explores the roots of the English gentleman and follows them to the present day. Today’s chaps live according to their own rules — with hats, pipes, and, of course, British humor. Inspired by men such as Beau Brummell and Lord Byron, they maintain proper English ideals and virtues. By stepping back to tradition, they’re advancing a lifestyle revolution.

In this book, chap expert Gustav Temple explains how a chap dresses, where he goes on vacation, which sports he plays (cricket) and which ones he doesn’t (everything else). From the historical foundations of British gentlemen’s culture to today’s dos and don’ts, How to be Chap provides thorough answers to chap-related questions and plenty of cultivated laughs.

Style authority Gustav Temple co-founded the British magazine The Chap in 1999. This publication is dedicated to rescuing the English gentleman from extinction and consequently saving our world from moral and sartorial collapse.

A step-by-step drawing course for budding fashion designers

Leading fashion designers such as Anna Sui, Christian Lacroix, Zandra Rhodes and Valentino explain why drawing is so important to the design process, with examples from their sketchbooks for inspiration. Then there are sections that show how to create a fashion template (croquis), including fashion proportions and how to turn a stick figure into a full figure; how to draw skirts, trousers, jackets and dresses onto the fashion template; and how to develop a collection, including the creation of complete outfits and seasonal looks. Finally there’s a section that looks at the design process, from creating a mood board and following a brief to developing a collection.

How to Draw Like a Fashion Designer is based on hands-on workshops held at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London. It was the winner in the 12+ section of School Library Association's Information Book Awards 2014.

Scott Robertson, Thomas Bertling
ID: 14456
Видавництво: Design Studio Press

Scott Robertson explains how the human brain interprets the visual world around us, as well as the subject of visually communicating the form of an object in easy-to-understand, step-by-step lessons through the use of drawings, photography, and even 3D digital imagery that will enlighten and empower an artist.

This book is about the fundamentals of light, shadow and reflectivity; the focus is firmly on helping to improve visual understanding of the world around and on techniques for representing that world.

Rendering is the next step after drawing to communicate ideas more clearly. Building on what Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling wrote about in How To Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, this book shares everything the two experts know about how to render light, shadow and reflective surfaces.

This book is divided into two major sections: the first explains the physics of light and shadow. One will learn how to construct proper shadows in perspective and how to apply the correct values to those surfaces. The second section focuses on the physics of reflectivity and how to render a wide range of materials utilizing this knowledge.

Throughout the book, two icons appear that indicate either “observation” or “action.” This means the page or section is about observing reality or taking action by applying the knowledge and following the steps in creating your own work.

Similar to our previous book, How To Draw, this book contains links to free online rendering tutorials that can be accessed via the URL list or through the H2Re app.

About the Authors:

Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

Thomas Bertling has an extensive background as a successful industrial designer and engineer, with a varied array of clients such as Disney, Samsung, and Whole Foods, and a diverse portfolio of completed products on the market, from state-of-the-art medical innovations to combat-ready military vehicles. This hands-on expertise gives him a distinct approach and remarkable edge in addition to being an acclaimed design educator. With substantial experience teaching all levels of perspective sketching and construction to both university students and corporate clients, he has created comprehensive and proven curricula rooted in practicality and real-world application. He currently serves as Director of Entertainment Design at Art Center College of Design as well as teaching several courses and training faculty members.
