Best of Bauhaus. The definitive reference work, now in a compact format

This handy, updated edition explores the Bauhaus School of Art and Design through some 575 illustrations and biographies of its key personalities. Realized in collaboration with the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin, the reference work is now available in Bibliotheca Universalis format, the perfect companion for your next trip to Berlin, Weimar, or Dessau.

In a fleeting 14-year period between two world wars, Germany’s Bauhaus school of art and design changed the face of modernity. With utopian ideas for the future, the school developed a pioneering fusion of fine art, craftsmanship, and technology, which they applied across media and practices from film to theater, and sculpture to ceramics.

This best-selling reference work is made in collaboration with the Bauhaus-Archiv/Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin, the world’s largest collection on the history of the Bauhaus. Some 575 illustrations including architectural plans, studies, photographs, sketches, and models record not only the realized works but also the leading principles and personalities of this idealistic creative community through its three successive locations in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin. From informal shots of group gymnastics to drawings guided by Paul Klee, from extensive architectural plans to an infinitely sleek ashtray by Marianne Brandt, the collection brims with the colors, materials, and geometries that made up the Bauhaus vision of a “total” work of art.

As we approach the Bauhaus centennial, this is a defining account of its energy and rigor, not only as a trailblazing movement in Modernism but also as a paradigm of art education, where creative expression and cutting-edge ideas led to simultaneously functional and beautiful creations. The handy edition features artists Josef Albers, Marianne Brandt, Walter Gropius, Gertrud Grunow, Paul Klee, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich, and many more.

Family, food, engineering: these three words define the Bertazzoni brand, whose kitchen appliances date back to the nineteenth century.

For more than 100 years, Bertazzoni kitchen appliances have helped people bring the best of home-cooked food to the family table. This book traces the history of the brand, from the first wood-burning cooking stoves through the gas stoves of the 1950s to contemporary completely designed kitchens. From the nineteenth century to the present day, the history of Bertazzoni appliances is intertwined with the history of home, living, and family cooking traditions. By looking at the evolution of kitchen design, we can trace the changes in our lifestyles.

A brand with cooking ranges at its core that now also provides complete kitchens in every part of the world, Bertazzoni first began selling in the U.S. and Canada in 2005, and since then it has become a global brand that is still proud of its local, family roots in Italy.

This landmark book celebrates the best of British design, documenting the transformation and impact of designers' work over the years between the post-war 'Austerity Games' of 1948 and the 2012 Olympics.

As well as essays by leading curators and commentators, British Design from 1948 incorporates pieces by key practitioners (including Peter Saville, Barbara Hulanicki, Paul Smith and Tom Dixon) to build a comprehensive survey of over 350 of the finest examples of fashion and textiles, furniture, ceramics and glass, theatre design, graphics, photography, architecture, fine art and sculpture from this period.

In addition to discussing works commissioned for official purposes, including the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the Festival of Britain, the book highlights the globally influential, and very British, counter-culture, from the sixties boutiques of Mary Quant and Ossie Clark through to the club cultures of Punk, the New Romantics and Rave.

TASCHEN 25 - Special edition
"Hot Rods and Hula Hoops"

For much of the world, the 1950s were a drab decade of rebuilding after the devastation of World War II. In stark contrast, the United States economy was booming, and colorful tract housing developments were flourishing across the country. And as cars became a key part of this new lifestyle, they were saturated with color too. The war sparked a technology boom in the U.S., giving automakers as well as a growing band of auto enthusiasts mechanical advancements and an unprecedented range of colors to apply to their cars. U.S. automakers were experiencing an industry-wide rejuvenation, and fins and jet engine intakes would become the styling cues that would define the decade.

This compendium of colorful advertisements brings automobiles from the 50s back to life. Featured makes include: Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, General Motors, Lincoln, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Studebaker, and many more.

The rich colors of Fiestaware . . . the translucent beauty of Waterford crystal . . . nothing adds personality to a celebration like the right tableware. But beyond their appeal to all who want to entertain in style, and their value as collectibles, china and glass wares mirror the profound cultural and economic shifts in 20th-century America and provide a unique vantage point from which to view our society. Illustrated with more than 200 photographs of enticing glass and ceramic objects, this luxurious volume—which accompanies an exhibit organized by the Dallas Museum of Art—is the first to take a comprehensive look at the modern tableware used in American homes, treating its cultural and business history as well as its design. From table settings for turn-of-the-century ladies' luncheons to trendy accessories for suburban barbecues in the post-World War II years to the tinfoil trays invented for TV dinners, this fascinating book has it all.

February 2005 marked the ephemeral installation of a monumental work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in New York City’s Central Park. First conceived in 1979 and rejected by New York City government in 1981, the project was approved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration in 2003. The work of art consisted of 7503 16-foot-high vinyl gates with saffron-colored fabric panels on twenty-three miles of the Park’s walkways. Seen from the buildings surrounding the Park, The Gates looked like a saffron flowing river, while those walking through them experienced the ambience of a fluid golden ceiling. Financed entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through their C.V.J. Corporation, The Gates were assembled and installed by thousands of paid workers. Completed on February 12, 2005, The Gates remained in place for sixteen days, after which they were removed and the materials recycled. The work of art was free for all visitors, who continued to use Central Park during the whole process. This historic event provided a memorable and joyous experience for New Yorkers and visitors. This book, which documents the entire project from its beginnings in 1979 to its completion in 2005, is the perfect souvenir for who want to remember this ephemeral work of art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude, both born on June 13, 1935, have been working in collaboration since 1961. Previous large-scale projects include Wrapped Coast, Australia, 1968–69, Valley Curtain, Grand Hogback, Rifle, Colorado, 1970–72, Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1972–76, Surrounded Islands, Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, Florida, 1980–83, The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris, 1975–85, The Umbrellas, Japan–USA, 1984–91, Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin, 1971–95, Wrapped Trees, Riehen, Switzerland, 1997–98.

The high artistic quality of Czech glass became known in the West only in the 1970s. The artists drew attention to themselves mainly because they explored the sculptural potential of glass and claimed to create art works in their own right. As a result, Czech glass art established itself as the third European powerhouse together with Scandinavia and Murano. Since the 1980s, it has been the undisputed leader in European glass art.

After 1945, Czech glass art developed on a constantly high artistic level. Little is still known about the early works of artists like René Roubíček, Stanislav Libenský and his wife Jaroslava Brychtová, or Václav Cigler, Pavel Hlava, Vladimír Kopecký, and Jiří Harcuba. The crucial factor for the high standards of Czech glass design was the excellent training at the glass institutes of Northern Bohemia in Nový Bor, Kamenický Šenov, and Železný Brod, but most importantly the severe demands for quality in design inculcated by the Prague Academy upon nearly all the artists who later became successful.

The first comprehensive record of Czech glass art from 1945 to 1980. All 350 objects by 36 artists are reproduced in brilliant colour illustrations and discussed in detail. Informed contributions by international authors, biographies of artists and firms, and an index of signatures.
