February 2005 marked the ephemeral installation of a monumental work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in New York City’s Central Park. First conceived in 1979 and rejected by New York City government in 1981, the project was approved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration in 2003. The work of art consisted of 7503 16-foot-high vinyl gates with saffron-colored fabric panels on twenty-three miles of the Park’s walkways. Seen from the buildings surrounding the Park, The Gates looked like a saffron flowing river, while those walking through them experienced the ambience of a fluid golden ceiling. Financed entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through their C.V.J. Corporation, The Gates were assembled and installed by thousands of paid workers. Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill is the elder daughter of the 11th Duke of Marlborough, whose family home is Blenheim Palace. Her interest in interior design began when at the age of 16 she traveled to study fine art and languages in Florence and Paris. Later she returned to England to finish her formal studies at the world-famous Inchbald School of Design.

The high artistic quality of Czech glass became known in the West only in the 1970s. The artists drew attention to themselves mainly because they explored the sculptural potential of glass and claimed to create art works in their own right. As a result, Czech glass art established itself as the third European powerhouse together with Scandinavia and Murano. Since the 1980s, it has been the undisputed leader in European glass art.

After 1945, Czech glass art developed on a constantly high artistic level. Little is still known about the early works of artists like René Roubíček, Stanislav Libenský and his wife Jaroslava Brychtová, or Václav Cigler, Pavel Hlava, Vladimír Kopecký, and Jiří Harcuba. The crucial factor for the high standards of Czech glass design was the excellent training at the glass institutes of Northern Bohemia in Nový Bor, Kamenický Šenov, and Železný Brod, but most importantly the severe demands for quality in design inculcated by the Prague Academy upon nearly all the artists who later became successful.
