February 2005 marked the ephemeral installation of a monumental work of art by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in New York City’s Central Park. First conceived in 1979 and rejected by New York City government in 1981, the project was approved by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration in 2003. The work of art consisted of 7503 16-foot-high vinyl gates with saffron-colored fabric panels on twenty-three miles of the Park’s walkways. Seen from the buildings surrounding the Park, The Gates looked like a saffron flowing river, while those walking through them experienced the ambience of a fluid golden ceiling. Financed entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through their C.V.J. Corporation, The Gates were assembled and installed by thousands of paid workers. Completed on February 12, 2005, The Gates remained in place for sixteen days, after which they were removed and the materials recycled. The work of art was free for all visitors, who continued to use Central Park during the whole process. This historic event provided a memorable and joyous experience for New Yorkers and visitors. This book, which documents the entire project from its beginnings in 1979 to its completion in 2005, is the perfect souvenir for who want to remember this ephemeral work of art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude, both born on June 13, 1935, have been working in collaboration since 1961. The high artistic quality of Czech glass became known in the West only in the 1970s. The artists drew attention to themselves mainly because they explored the sculptural potential of glass and claimed to create art works in their own right. As a result, Czech glass art established itself as the third European powerhouse together with Scandinavia and Murano. Since the 1980s, it has been the undisputed leader in European glass art.

After 1945, Czech glass art developed on a constantly high artistic level. Little is still known about the early works of artists like René Roubíček, Stanislav Libenský and his wife Jaroslava Brychtová, or Václav Cigler, Pavel Hlava, Vladimír Kopecký, and Jiří Harcuba. The crucial factor for the high standards of Czech glass design was the excellent training at the glass institutes of Northern Bohemia in Nový Bor, Kamenický Šenov, and Železný Brod, but most importantly the severe demands for quality in design inculcated by the Prague Academy upon nearly all the artists who later became successful.

Decorative Art 1950s explores the spirit of optimism and the fervent consumerism of the decade. Technology and construction had been enervated by research during the war and these discoveries could now be applied in peacetime. The popularization of plastics, fiberglass, and latex literally shaped the decade. Rising incomes and postwar rebuilding on bother sides of the Atlantic led to a massive housing boom in both the suburbs and inner cities, and these new homes reflected the new style.

While European design was extraordinarily inventive, American design was looking to an idealized vision of the future - between them a modern idiom was developed that can be seen vividly on these pages. Liberation was in the air, men were rushing to the moon, and the sky was the limit as far as visual creativity was concerned. The concept of lifestyle really came into its own, and although the early years of the decade still saw a rivalry between the well-crafted object and industrial manufacture, by its end both ethnic and pop iconography had gained equal foothold in the aesthetic. Light was also pedominant in shaping interiors. Freedom of choice and personal expression were the buzzwords for the young consumer, and so the likes of Pasmore, Panton, Safdie, Sottsass, Paolozzi, and Lomazzi did what they could to oblige.
