About the Authors:

Sally Mann is a celebrated American artist and the author of several critically acclaimed books of photography, as well as the memoir Hold Still, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. She still lives in Lexington.
 Sarah Greenough and Sarah Kennel are curators at the National Gallery of Art and the Peabody Essex Museum, respectively, and cocurators of the Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings exhibition.

The amiably spontaneous pictures taken by Sam Shaw (1912–1999) are well known: the native and life-long New Yorker shot countless cover photographs for Life and Look in the fifties and sixties, and later also took the still images for the films he produced himself. Shaw and Marilyn Monroe were friends, and he captured her unique aura in countless unpretentious portraits. During the filming of The Seven Year Itch, he staged his probably best known picture with her: Marilyn standing over a subway grate, a waft of air blowing the skirt of her white dress above her knees.

Sam Shaw also portrayed almost every major Hollywood star of his day, consistently capturing the moment in his quest for truthfulness, with enthusiasm and from a new perspective, just as if he were selecting the camera angle for a film sequence. The researcher and author Lorie Karnath, the book’s editor, enhances the publication with very personal memories of her long-time friend.

Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, including volumes on the Who, Bob Marley, and 1960s folk-rock. A San Francisco Bay resident for 35 years, he has contributed to numerous publications, including MOJO, Record Collector, and The Oxford American. Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) is a painter, photographer and graphic artist, and one of the founders of Pop Art. Known for his landscapes with superimposed slogans and "word paintings," Ruscha has had many international retrospectives, and represented the USA at the 2005 Venice Biennale. In this stunning volume, the well-known photographer Princess Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, whose work has appeared in many respected publications, gives us a glimpse of her own personal photo album. The result: an extremely intimate overview of her life and times. Her work is a personal chronicle of the beau monde of the past 60 years, of people and places she knew well. The photographs are distinguished by their artistic touch and keen insight. Her subjects were close friends, who, comfortable in her presence, revealed their true selves. The resulting images include many original glances of famous personalities, such as the photograph of Aristotle Onassis trying to repair his beach car!

The eldest child of Baron and Baroness Mayr-Melnhof, Princess Marianne Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn was born in 1919 in Salzburg. She attended the Blocherer art school in Munich and later embarked on a career as a professional photographer.
